Sioux Falls' own HGTV stars are back for a third season
Get ready for even more South Dakota rustic, cowhide and bold design concepts, because Chelsea and Cole DeBoer not only return for season 3 of HGTV's 'Down Home Fab' on May 27, but also launch the much-anticipated online store. The season 3 premiere of 'Down Home Fab' will air at 7 p.m. Central Standard Time. As far as what to expect from the show's third season, the eight, one-hour-long episodes will feature warmer tones, more contemporary but still rustic styles and a few major milestones. 'We've been saying contemporary, because it's another spin on South Dakota glam. I don't really love glam, glam as much,' Chelsea DeBoer said. 'I think I like comfortable, lived in, warm and a little rustic flair.' And the DeBoers say they feel even more confident and 'true to themselves' in their design style and in the HGTV series spotlight compared with the first two seasons. 'Season one was like, we're on a new network, so it's kind of like the first day of high school," Cole DeBoer said. "You're worried about the group of mean girls, because it's a new audience who doesn't know you yet." Despite that, when season one debuted in early 2023, it attracted more than 6 million viewers and became HGTV's highest-rated freshman series since May 2022, which prompted a rare mid-season renewal,' according to HGTV. Season two topped those numbers and then some with a total of 7.3 million viewers in 2024. 'We just had a lot more fun this year, and we were like our true selves. We were confident, we were just having a lot of fun with it,' Cole DeBoer said in a previous Article Leader article. 'We also did the biggest project we've ever done." Sioux Falls' HGTV celebs are putting city on the map 'We're so excited for everyone to see this season, because it does feel different than the others, like we definitely went outside of our normal box,' Chelsea DeBoer said. The premiere opens with a single mother with health struggles who greatly needs a redesign that will function well for her home office and her three kids. In the meantime, the couple preparing for the grand opening of their brick-and-mortar, Down Home by DeBoers, in July 2024 in Tea, despite a few setbacks. The DeBoers recently celebrated the store's one-year anniversary in March. 'It means so much to us, and we're just having the best time.' While filming season three of 'Down Home Fab,' Chelsea and Cole DeBoer were simultaneously traveling to Grantville, Utah, near Salt Lake City, to star in season six of the HGTV series 'Rock the Block,' which premiered April 14. 'Rock the Block's' season finale airs 8 p.m. Central Standard Time on May 26. The DeBoers said they felt somewhat reluctant at first to star in the show, between raising their family, opening the store and filming 'Down Home Fab' at the same time. 'It was also very intimidating. I mean, being the network's biggest show, and you're on it with some original members that we've looked up to,' Cole DeBoer said. Through much organization and planning, the DeBoers were able to rise to the challenge, and they said they are both glad they did and are proud of what they accomplished with their house remodel. 'It was just so cool. Like Ty Pennington, I've watched 'Extreme Home Makeover' when I was little, and so just to be around there, it felt like an out-of-body experience, ' Chelsea DeBoer said. This season, two veteran design teams return to the block challenge to face off against two rookie design duos — one of which being the DeBoers. During six weeks, each team competes to transform the interior and exterior of four identical blank-slate homes within a limited budget of $250,000. The team with the highest home appraisal earns bragging rights and a street named after them. New this season, judges will tour the homes without the design teams present, keeping each team's work anonymous. Additionally, the weekly judges will remain a surprise until judging actually begins. 'Viewers expressed blind judging would be fairer to the teams competing — and we heard them,' said Jodi Scheer, executive producer of 'Rock the Block.' Both television shows will be available to stream the next day on Discovery+ and Max. But fans of the show have been yearning to shop the DeBoers' collection from their store, Down Home by DeBoers. On May 27, that wait will be over. The DeBoers said earlier this year the No. 1 goal for 2025 is to get an online store up and running so people from all over the world can browse decor, kitchen items, furniture and more for their homes. 'The most asked question we get is, 'Will you have an online store?' and it's happening,' Chelsea DeBoer said via social media. And the countdown on continues to tick to the second. Orders made the week of the launch may receive a special note of thanks from the DeBoer family. As the dust settles after Chelsea and Cole DeBoers' bustling schedule of filming two television series and opening their first brick-and-mortar, the couple wants to keep the momentum going. 'We have so many goals on our list,' Chelsea said. 'I'm thinking about becoming a doctor,' Cole joked. As for the question of a season four of 'Down Home Fab,' the DeBoers are eager and open to the opportunity, should it be renewed. 'And I love being able to work with my wife every day,' Cole DeBoer said. 'In the meantime, we love the chaos.' And the support from the community, they said, is one of the things that drives them. 'We feel so grateful for the support we've had in Sioux Falls, and the amount of people that come up to us when we're out, that watch us on both of our shows,' Cole DeBoer said. Mark Carney's plan to move quickly has its risks — and rewards
In a recurring feature, Susan Delacourt, a small-l liberal, and Matt Gurney, a small-c conservative, bring their different perspectives — and a shared commitment to civil disagreement — to the political debates of the moment. Matt Gurney: Over the last few weeks, Prime Minister Mark Carney's postelection government has been shaping up. A cabinet has been announced. Parliamentarians are being sworn in — including the PM, for the first time. Some key staff positions remain unfilled. With the House returning next week and the King coming to town, what's your sense of where things stand? Susan Delacourt: I've been talking to folks this week, all on the outside of the new Prime Minister's Office, I should stress, but the general take is that things in this government are 'in flux.' Carney is keen to get things moving quickly, and impressing people, but his ambitions in that direction may be getting stalled by uncertainty over who's working where and for how long. His chief of staff, Marco Mendicino, is only staying through summer in 'transition' mode. ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW MG: Lucky us. The sooner that transition wraps up, the better. But overall, I'd say that Carney does seem to be trying to move faster than his predecessor. That's good. The biggest criticism I had of Justin Trudeau, and it was sort of a meta-criticism that tied together a lot of specific failures, was that he was overwhelmed by events and couldn't move at all. So aggressive speed and energy is a welcome change. The problem is, I don't get the sense that Carney will be able to sustain this in the face of ... well, Ottawa. SD: Hey that's my town you're talking about. What do you mean by that? MG: I don't think Trudeau ran into problems because he was lazy, dumb or meant badly. I think he ran into problems because the machinery of government is, ahem, broken. Or at least not suited to the much faster pace the current state of the world requires. And I don't think Carney can overcome that by force of will. SD: Back during the pandemic, I talked to a Conservative who worked in Stephen Harper's government, who said: Conservatives didn't trust the public servants enough, and Liberals rely too much on them. That sounded right. No offence to the public service, and especially not any of the people in it, but the actual purpose of their jobs can be to slow things down. So this is going to be a challenge for Carney if he wants to speed things up, I agree. That carries other risks though. Namely, mistakes. MG: I guess the other issue is how comfortable the Liberal party will be with a boss that's pushing harder than the old one. The members can cause as many problems as the bureaucrats. SD: To that point, I'll be fascinated to see how the debate goes at this weekend's caucus retreat, when there will be talk of giving MPs more power over who is the leader, the caucus chair and who is in and out of caucus. This Reform Act conversation didn't go far under Trudeau, but my colleagues were finding MPs willing to talk (off the record mainly) about how it would be a good idea to have a more muscular set of MPs. MG: It wasn't a lack of muscle. It was a lack of, uh, another part of the anatomy. The caucus had all the power they needed to force Trudeau out. They just didn't have the guramba. But I was asking more in the sense of whether these guys are eager to move faster than Trudeau did, or now just totally habituated to the speed of JT that anything faster will be resisted. ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW SD: Let me ask you a question. What will you need to see in the throne speech as evidence of Carney moving more quickly than Trudeau? MG: Nothing in the throne speech will answer that question for me. I've been speechified enough. They've lost their allure. SD: Well maybe King Charles can put some gloss back on it. I think I'd like to see some deadlines, such as the July 1 one for an internal trade deal we already know about. I will be looking for ways in which Carney is seeking co-operation with opposition parties — yes, even Conservatives — to get things done. I will be curious to see how much the Donald Trump drama figures into this government's plans, because that president has a way of messing with best-laid plans, as the Trudeau government learned. MG: I'd welcome some firm deadlines and goals. Absolutely. That's a basic accountability mechanism we've largely nerfed out of our governance. So absolutely. But that's still going to take some time, especially with summer looming. On that front, I'll ask you this: any thoughts on the reports that Carney is having a hard time staffing the PMO? I don't have any, to be honest. You know that stuff better than I do. SD: I think this is worrisome. It reminds me of how long it took for Trudeau to staff up in the first term, mainly because they were looking for folks who would be different from past Liberal governments. The same motivation may be at work here; in a rush to be new, some old problems repeat themselves. MG: Do you get the sense that it's a lack of interested candidates or that Carney is being picky? SD: Here's where I reveal a secret. I've not all that acquainted with Mark Carney. I've actually had more conversations with Pierre Poilievre (though not recently.) So I'm only guessing at whether he is being picky. It wouldn't surprise me to hear he's a perfectionist, though, and I find that encouraging. I am surprised, as I was discussing with a colleague this week, about how he didn't land in office with some high-powered business and corporate types to help him run PMO. He certainly travels in those circles. Maybe this is a persuasion act we will see over the summer. Or maybe government has looked so hard over the past years that any big names will not think it's worth the sacrifice. It took Carney more than a decade to plunge into this world, after all. Selfies, mobile phone photography, enjoying music and videos on a mobile phone all became possible because of innovation driven by the SDA.
