Toxic foam in Thenpennai river raises concerns; NGT to study issue
Krishnagiri: Much to the dismay of local residents, Thenpennai river was filled with toxic foam in Kelavarapalli dam area even on Tuesday as well, with Bengaluru-based industrial units discharging untreated effluents into the river that originates from Karnataka. Krishnagiri district collector S Dinesh Kumar inspected both Kelavarapalli and KRP dams on the day and said the National Green Tribunal has formed a committee to address the issue of toxic foam in the Thenpennai river. "Actions will be decided based on the committee's conclusions." Pointing to the heavy inflow in the river and the release of 4,500 cusecs of water from the KPR dam, the collector urged the residents living along the river bank and low-lying areas to move to safer locations. He said the water release from the KPR dam was necessitated by heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of Karnataka and Krishnagiri over the past three days. He said a flood alert has been sounded for Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri and Tiruvannamalai districts as a precaution. The collector also reviewed the safety measures put in place by govt officials. Flood alert sounded across Thenpennai river in Krishnagiri
Krishnagiri: The district administration has issued a flood alert to people residing near the banks of the Thenpennai river, following heavy rain. According to a statement, the water level in the Krishnagiri reservoir project (KRP) dam is expected to reach its maximum capacity in a few days, due to good water flow in the catchment regions. Krishnagiri district collector S Dinesh Kumar said the flood alert will remain in place until further notice. He urged residents, especially those near the Thenpennai river and low-lying areas, to evacuate to safer locations. Water resources department (WRD) officials said the dam's water level crossed 50.5 feet on Monday. WRD officials told TOI that the inflow was measured at 2,000 cusecs on Sunday, and that the entire inflow is being directed into the river to keep the dam's water level stable at 50.5 feet. An official added that they also anticipate the rate of inflow to increase further in the coming days as rainfall continues in the catchment areas.
