Brodie Johnston, Mike Mancini questionable for Vanderbilt baseball opening weekend with injury

Two key Vanderbilt baseball offensive players may miss time at the start of the season due to injury. James Madison transfer Mike Mancini and freshman Brodie Johnston, both of whom projected as starters when healthy, are "up in the air" over whether they will play at the MLB Desert Invitational, Tim Corbin said on Monday. Mancini has been out since the beginning of the preseason and had minor surgery Jan. 31. In 2024 with the Dukes, the infielder hit .329 with 15 home runs and 29 stolen bases. He was competing for the starting job at second base, which is now likely to go to Jayden Davis, the incumbent starter at that position. Johnston suffered a hairline fracture in his hand after getting hit by a pitch during a scrimmage Feb. 5, according to his father Michael Johnston. He was the likely starter at third base. In scrimmages over the weekend, the players who saw time at third base were junior Chris Maldonado and freshman Rustan Rigdon. Maldonado could move over from his projected first base spot, with juco transfer Riley Nelson playing first. Johnston was the SEC Preseason Freshman of the Year by Baseball America. These injuries are not expected to be season-ending, Corbin said, but they may not be ready in time to play opening weekend. Aria Gerson covers Vanderbilt athletics for The Tennessean. LSU newcomer named SEC Preseason Freshman of the Year by D1Baseball

Derek Curiel, a top member of LSU baseball's 2024 recruiting class, was named the SEC Preseason Freshman of the Year. Coming out of high school, Curiel was ranked as the No. 10 overall high school player in the country and the second-best high school player in California by Perfect Game. During his Senior Year at Orange Lutheran High School, Curiel had a .314 batting average with 10 doubles, 21 RBI, and 19 stolen bases. The left-handed outfielder participated in LSU's intrasquad games in the fall of 2024 and was a standout for the Tigers. He finished with a .388 batting average and a .522 on-base percentage in those games. The hype surrounding Curiel is real as he could be the next great Tiger in the outfield. He will have a lot of playing time this season and will hopefully continue to shine.
