Derek Curiel, a top member of LSU baseball's 2024 recruiting class, was named the SEC Preseason Freshman of the Year.
Coming out of high school, Curiel was ranked as the No. 10 overall high school player in the country and the second-best high school player in California by Perfect Game.
During his Senior Year at Orange Lutheran High School, Curiel had a .314 batting average with 10 doubles, 21 RBI, and 19 stolen bases. The left-handed outfielder participated in LSU's intrasquad games in the fall of 2024 and was a standout for the Tigers. He finished with a .388 batting average and a .522 on-base percentage in those games.
The hype surrounding Curiel is real as he could be the next great Tiger in the outfield. He will have a lot of playing time this season and will hopefully continue to shine.

Four-star cancels Georgia visit, takes trip to LSU instead

Four-star cancels Georgia visit, takes trip to LSU instead LSU football will host 2026 edge rusher Landon Barnes for a visit this weekend, according to a report from Rivals' Sam Spiegelman. The four-star prospect cancelled a trip to Georgia and replaced it with a trip to Baton Rouge. Texas and SMU are considered the frontrunners for Barnes' commitment. However, it would appear that the Duncanville, TX native has an interest in LSU. All three schools made it into his top eight, along with Arizona State, Washington, Ohio State, and Georgia. On3's Industry Rankings put Barnes at No. 19 among Texas prospects in the 2026 cycle. He is No. 19 at his position and No. 118 nationally. LSU has yet to earn a commitment from a defensive end this cycle, but it appears they're making a serious push for Barnes. LSU's 2026 class is first in the SEC and second nationally to USC, despite getting a commitment from four-star offensive tackle Emanuel Tucker earlier this week. Barnes would be the eleventh addition for the group built on keeping the best Louisiana prospects at home while hitting on some of the region's top talents. Duncanville is a Texas powerhouse, routinely producing top recruits. Barnes wouldn't be the first Duncanville product to join LSU -- its also where LSU running back Caden Durham played his high school ball.

Shaking off an illness, Ben Geary returns to get St. Laurence past Troy Triad. One hit at a time. ‘Pass the torch.'

Aside from the usual excitement of playing in a state semifinal game, senior infielder Ben Geary had another reason to be extra grateful to be taking the field Friday for St. Laurence. The South Suburban College recruit missed Monday's 2-1 supersectional win over Simeon with an illness. Knowing there was a chance his high school career could end with him at home sick, Geary was thankful his teammates came through and gave him another chance to play. 'I was sweating and biting my nails following the game on Monday night,' Geary said. 'I wasn't expecting it to be as close as it was. I didn't want that to be my final high school game and not even be there for my teammates, but I knew it wouldn't be. I had confidence in my teammates. 'It meant the world to be out there. This is my home. I need to be there with my teammates.' Geary returned and delivered an RBI single Friday morning, helping the Vikings roll to an 11-6 win over Troy Triad in a Class 3A semifinal at Duly Health and Care Field in Joliet. Wisconsin-Stout recruit Connor Marino went 2-for-5 with four RBIs to lead St. Laurence (36-5). Danny Donovan finished 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs, while Adrian Perez added two hits, two runs and an RBI and Mickey Lotus went 3-for-4 with a run. The Vikings will try to win their first state title in program history at 1 p.m. Saturday against the semifinal winner between Benet (26-12) and Cary-Grove (25-12). It's their second appearance in the state championship game. In 2019, St. Laurence lost 6-3 to Montini in the Class 3A final. Sophomore left-hander Jimmy Benson threw 5 2/3 strong innings Friday against a lefty-heavy lineup for Triad (34-7). He allowed three earned runs on seven hits and struck out six for the win. 'It was fun,' Benson said. 'I was waiting for this moment. I want to pitch in the biggest game possible for us. I like the feeling of pitching in big games with the adrenaline and all that. 'I feel like it helps me do better.' Geary, meanwhile, started feeling ill Sunday and it only got worse as Monday rolled around. 'I couldn't sleep the whole night on Sunday,' Geary said. 'I was just as sick as can be. I just didn't feel like I could play. I could barely stand up. 'I just got a lot of fluids in my body and tried to be ready for state.' Geary said he still wasn't feeling close to 100% Friday, but there was no way he was missing this. He came through with an RBI single during a four-run fourth inning and also drew a walk. 'I wasn't feeling as good as I had hoped, but I just wanted to stay simple,' Geary said. 'Try not to do too much at the plate. Just do my job, play my role and pass the torch on to the next guy.' That is essentially the motto for St. Laurence's entire lineup. The Vikings, who led 8-0 after five innings, put together three long rallies — scoring four times in the second inning, four times in the fourth and three in the seventh. St. Laurence finished with 12 hits, including 10 singles, plus doubles from Lotus and Donovan. 'I feel like we've always been kind of scrappy hitters,' Lotus said. 'We have Cory Les, but other than that, we don't really have anyone that can hit the ball crazy far or anything. 'We made that first pitcher work, and I don't think he's worked like that before. I feel like we really got to him.' And now, the Vikings are one win away from history. 'This is what we work for,' Geary said. 'I think our team deserves it, and I'm glad we get the opportunity. We're going to play our hearts out.'

Jay Johnson on how LSU baseball has become a top destination for elite pitchers

Jay Johnson on how LSU baseball has become a top destination for elite pitchers LSU baseball's second College World Series appearance in three years under head coach Jay Johnson is fueled by another phenomenal pitching staff. Under Johnson, LSU has emerged as a premier destination for pitchers across the country -- transfer portal products and high school recruits. "I think we're at the forefront of developing pitching in college baseball," Johnson said. "There's no better place for a pitcher in the entire country to come right now and develop to be a major leaguer than LSU." Several pitchers heard their names called in MLB Drafts since Johnson took the helm in 2022, including 2023 first overall selection Paul Skenes as well as 2024 second-round selections Luke Holman and Gage Jump. All three came to Baton Rouge as transfers. In 2025, the starting tandem of Kade Anderson and Anthony Eyanson has been one of college baseball's best one-two punches. The duo ranks No. 2 and No. 3 nationally in strikeouts. Eyanson joined the Tigers from UC-San Diego, while Wofford transfer Zac Cowan ranked among the SEC's top relievers. Between home grown talent and portal additions, Johnson crafted a winning formula to pitcher recruitment at LSU. It has his team competing for its second national championship in three years. When recruiting the caliber of pitcher LSU needs, you have to battle the temptation to go pro, along with recruiting the other teams in the SEC. LSU's recent success has given Johnson and the Tigers a strong sales pitch. Johnson said he knew what LSU had on the position player side when arriving at LSU, highlighting Dylan Crews, but the pitching staff required attention. "We had a lot of work to do in constructing a College World Series or National Championship caliber pitching staff, and I feel like we've had that for the last three years," Johnson said. Casan Evans, a top high school pitcher in the 2024 recruiting class, was another key addition to this squad. With Anderson likely heading to the professional ranks, Evans has a chance to be LSU's ace next year. "He's a big-time pitcher and he pitches the best in the big moments. And that's a really good trait to have," Anderson said of Evans. LSU is set to open its 2025 CWS run vs. Arkansas on Saturday at 6 p.m. CT.
