Arch Manning's Preseason SEC Ranking Goes Viral
Arch Manning's Preseason SEC Ranking Goes Viral originally appeared on The Spun.
Expectations are sky-high for Texas quarterback Arch Manning as he becomes the team's full-time starter. So how is he viewed within the conference heading into the season?
The annual Preseason Media All-SEC teams were revealed today and Manning made the cut. It might not be in the way fans expected though.
South Carolina QB LaNorris Sellers was voted the First-Team quarterback, while LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier was the Second-Team quarterback. Manning was voted the third-team quarterback.
Fans didn't seem all that beaten up over Arch not making the First-Team though. While there was some disagreement over whether Sellers is better than Nussmeier, few people seem to be giving the voters grief over Manning not getting the top billing.
"Sellers over Arch.? I'm all for it just shocked a media outlet would take this stance," one user replied.
"I think he's better- but I'm really surprised to see LaNorris over Nuss," wrote another.
"Sellers over Nussmeier is interesting," a third wrote.
"LaNorris over Nuss?? This is gonna be bookmarked for December!"
It's pretty easy to understand why the expectations are more relaxed for Manning. Despite his incredible rating as a prospect and his legendary pedigree, he still lacks experience and the results he's shown in what little time he has been on the field have been somewhat mixed.
In 10 games last season, most of which was spot duty, he completed 61 of 90 passes for 939 yards and nine touchdowns with just two interceptions. He was an efficient runner too, managing 108 yards and four touchdowns on 25 carries.
But Sellers and Nussmeier have more experience and more success in their respective roles.
Sellers completed 65.6-percent of his passes for over 2,500 yards and 18 touchdowns while adding over 600 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground.
Nussmeier was one of the SEC's top QBs last year, throwing for over 4,000 yards while leading the conference in completions and attempts.
That said, Manning might be in a better position to win this year. Texas is built to win a national championship and the expectation is they'll be contending for both the SEC title and snagging a spot in the College Football Playoff.
If Manning lives up to the billing, he might be able to do the one thing that his uncles and grandfather never could: Win a national Manning's Preseason SEC Ranking Goes Viral first appeared on The Spun on Jul 18, 2025
