SEMI Reports Worldwide Silicon Wafer Shipments Increase 10% Year-on-Year in Q2 2025
Quarter-over-Quarter Shipment Growth in 2025 Indicates Early Signs of Recovery Beyond Memory MILPITAS, Calif., July 29, 2025 /CNW/ -- The SEMI Silicon Manufacturers Group (SMG) reported, in its quarterly analysis of the silicon wafer industry, that worldwide silicon wafer shipments increased 9.6% year-on-year to 3,327 million square inches (MSI) from the 3,035 MSI recorded during the same quarter of 2024. Sequentially, shipments grew 14.9% quarter-over-quarter from the 2,896 MSI recorded during the first quarter of this year, indicating emerging signs of recovery for select business sectors outside of memory. "The silicon wafer demand for AI data-center chips, including high-bandwidth memory (HBM), continues to be very strong," said Lee Chungwei (李崇偉), Chairman of SEMI SMG and Vice President and Chief Auditor at GlobalWafers. "Fab utilization for other devices generally remains low, although inventory levels appear to be normalizing. While the direction of silicon shipments indicates positive momentum, the future impact of geopolitical and supply chain dynamics remains uncertain." Silicon wafers are the fundamental building material for the majority of semiconductors, which are vital components of all electronic devices. The highly engineered thin disks are produced in diameters of up to 300 mm and serve as the substrate material on which most semiconductors are fabricated. The SMG is a sub-committee of the SEMI Electronic Materials Group (EMG) and is open to SEMI members involved in manufacturing polycrystalline silicon, monocrystalline silicon or silicon wafers (e.g., as cut, polished, epitaxial). The SMG facilitates collective efforts on issues related to the silicon industry, including the development of market information and statistics about the silicon industry and the semiconductor market. Paraguay vows to stand by Taiwan, announces President Lai's visit in August
ASUNCION, July 15 — Paraguay, Taiwan's only remaining diplomatic ally in South America, vowed yesterday to defend its ties with the self-governing democracy claimed by China and announced its president, Lai Ching-te, will visit in August. President Santiago Pena hosted Taiwan's Foreign Minister Lin Chia-Lung on a visit to Asuncion with a delegation of around 30 business leaders. 'Paraguay is ready to defend this 68-year relationship, which is based on democratic principles and values, with all its strength and with a loud voice,' Pena said, adding Taiwan has been 'tremendously generous' with its investments in his country. 'We do not disregard China, but we recognize the self-determination of the people of Taiwan,' with which Paraguay hoped to move to 'a higher level of collaboration,' he added. Lai, Pena announced at an investment forum, will visit Paraguay in 30 days. Among those in attendance Monday were Terry Tsao, a senior executive at semiconductor company SEMI, as well as representatives of the Taiwanese IT, communications, smart transportation, agriculture, construction and building industries. Taiwan is a global chip powerhouse, producing more than half of the world's semiconductors, vital for powering the latest generative Artificial Intelligence models. — AFP

Canatu receives customer approval for its CNT100 SEMI reactor and post-processing equipment, enabling mass production of advanced EUV pellicles
Vantaa, Finland, July 11, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Canatu Plc (CANATU, Nasdaq First North, Finland) has received Site Acceptance Test (SAT) approval for its first CNT100 SEMI reactor and for the related post-processing peripherals, shipped to a semiconductor customer in September 2024. The equipment successfully passed the extensive tests conducted on-site at the customer's premises and met the stringent technical requirements and specifications defined in the acceptance criteria. This confirms the CNT100 SEMI reactor's readiness for mass production of CNT pellicle membranes. Juha Kokkonen, CEO of Canatu, commented: 'As far as we know, this marks the world's first CNT reactor qualification for EUV pellicle manufacturing. Receiving SAT approval is a significant milestone for Canatu and for advanced semiconductor technologies. For the first time, our CNT100 SEMI reactor and its peripherals have been approved by the customer and are now ready for CNT pellicle membrane mass production. We sincerely thank everyone involved for their outstanding collaboration, which made this historical achievement possible.' The next step for the customer is to secure final approval for the ready CNT pellicle product and the complete manufacturing line, before pilot and risk mass production can begin. This phase would initiate the mass production of CNT pellicle membranes, generating non-recurring revenue from technology licensing, as well as recurring revenue from royalties on CNT pellicle sales, and from reactor consumables. Site Acceptance Test (SAT) means that the equipment is tested on-site after Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) to ensure the reactor and peripherals operate as intended in real use conditions. The SAT process included several output and product quality tests. With the SAT approval, Canatu's CNT100 SEMI reactor and peripherals are now ready for mass production. Demand for advanced semiconductors is accelerating due to the rapid growth of artificial intelligence. EUV (Extreme Ultraviolet) lithography is gaining traction, especially for sub-7 nanometer chips—the fastest-growing segment. Canatu is well-positioned to support this shift with its advanced CNT pellicle membranes, which outperform traditional composite pellicles. These membranes offer higher EUV transmission and greater thermal resistance, enabling them to withstand the extreme heat loads of 600W EUV lithography tools used to produce the most advanced chips. Its current core includes CNT membranes for extreme ultraviolet (EUV) processes in the semiconductor industry, enabling the manufacturing of the most advanced chips, as well as film heaters for advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) in the automotive industry. Additionally, electrochemical sensors for medical diagnostics are in the development phase. Canatu's patented CNT reactors and Dry DepositionTM method yield clean and pristine CNTs. The company operates through two business models: selling CNT products directly, as well as selling CNT reactors and licensing the related technology so that customers can produce CNT products under a limited license. Headquartered in Finland, Canatu also operates in the US, Japan, and Taiwan. Founded in 2004 as a spin-off from Aalto University's Nanomaterials Group, Canatu currently has around 140 employees representing 35 nationalities, with 20 percent holding or pursuing doctorates.
