Forum: Clean-up efforts are combined with education and innovation
We thank Forum writer Baorong Li for the letter 'Pair clean-up efforts with long-term education and waste prevention' (April 16) and appreciate the suggestions on strengthening the impact of community clean-up initiatives.
The Public Hygiene Council (PHC) agrees that behavioural change must go hand in hand with education, strong partnerships and practical tools.
In our milestone SG60 year, we have introduced the enhanced CleanHood programme to drive community ownership, strengthen community bonds and cultivate community champions.
Beyond residential areas, CleanHood will be piloted at schools to nurture young people who will not only keep Singapore clean, but also value and drive environmental ownership.
The frequency of SG Clean Day – when residents, businesses and town councils proactively come together to keep our shared spaces clean – has been increased from quarterly to bi-monthly starting this year, to provide more opportunities for everyone to take collective action.
Clean-up efforts must go beyond merely removing litter. By combining action with education and innovation, we hope to build a culture where elevating and maintaining high standards of public cleanliness and hygiene are the norm.
We encourage everyone to join us in our shared mission – to build good habits and ensure a cleaner, more hygienic and safer Singapore for current and future generations.
