SGTs to get manual counselling for transfer as Andhra government yields to demand
VIJAYAWADA: In a welcome move for the teaching community, the State government has decided to conduct manual counselling for Secondary Grade Teachers (SGTs), replacing the earlier plan of web-based counselling. The announcement came late on Monday evening, following growing concerns from teachers over the online process. TDP General Secretary and HRD Minister N Lokesh shared the decision on social media platform X, stating, 'After my field visit to Parvathipuram Manyam district, I discussed SGT counselling with public representatives and TDP MLCs Vepada Chiranjeevi, Kancharla Srikanth, Bhumireddy Ram Gopal Reddy, Alapati Raja, and Perabathula Rajasekhar. 'The MLCs conveyed the views of the teachers to me. As per their request, we have decided to conduct manual counselling for SGTs instead of online counselling.' The move comes after repeated appeals by teachers' unions and elected representatives who flagged issues with the online process, citing lack of transparency and technical challenges. The government's shift to manual counselling is being seen as a significant step toward ensuring a fair and stress-free transfer process. On Sunday, the Director of School Education announced Slot Counselling within Web Counselling. Teacher associations across the State have welcomed the latest decision of manual counselling.

SGTs must be promoted as headmasters in primary schools, not sidelined: APPTA
The leaders of the Andhra Pradesh Primary Teachers Association (APPTA) have urged the State government to promote Secondary Grade Teachers (SGTs) as headmasters in primary schools. APPTA State President A.G.S. Ganapathi Rao and state general secretary K. Prakash Rao said: 'We oppose the government's move to transfer surplus school assistants to primary schools under the guise of 'conversion' in the ongoing promotions and transfers process. The decision is unscientific and detrimental, as it sidelines the promotional opportunities of SGTs, who are the rightful candidates for headmaster posts in primary schools.' The association leaders said that school assistants possess subject expertise that must be utilised in high schools or upgraded primary schools. The association leaders rued that the upcoming DSC recruitment may include appointments of headmasters for primary schools. For SGTs, who are already being sidelined, 'It is like 'rubbing salt into the wound,' they said. The APPTA demanded that the government withdraw the proposal and after making temporary adjustments with surplus school assistants, fill all the vacant headmaster posts in model primary schools by promoting SGTs. They warned that if the government failed to address the issue, it could lead to statewide protests by SGTs.

Teachers' unions call for protest at Chittoor DEO office tomorrow
Tirupati: The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Teachers' Unions has called for a protest at the Chittoor District Education Office (DEO) on May 21, demanding amendments to the flawed teacher transfer policies and school restructuring regulations. In a meeting held at the UTF office in Tirupati on Monday, JAC district steering committee members including K Muthyala Reddy, Jagannatham, and Sambireddy among others passed a resolution urging the government to revoke GO 117. They criticised the reclassification of schools into nine types from the earlier six, calling it impractical and unfair. Leaders highlighted that restructuring was carried out without considering ground realities, leading to surplus teacher posts and conversion of many schools into single-teacher institutions. The relocation of classes 3, 4, and 5 to model schools has forced young students to travel long distances, they noted. The committee also condemned the government's unilateral approach to transfer rules and demanded promotions for SGTs to fill headmaster posts in model schools. They insisted on revising student-teacher ratios in high schools and correcting irregularities in primary teacher postings. The JAC urged all teachers to make the May 21 protest a success. Several union leaders and members participated in the meeting.
