31 reported dead due to Crising, Dante, Emong, Habagat —NDRRMC

SHERYLIN UNTALAN/GMA Integrated News The reported death toll due to the impact of Tropical Cyclones Crising, Dante, Emong, and the Southwest or Habagat has increased to 31, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said on Monday. In its 6 a.m. report, the NDRRMC said most of these fatalities were reported in Metro Manila with nine. This was followed by Western Visayas with six; Calabarzon with five; Negros Island Region and Northern Mindanao with three each; two in Central Luzon; and Mimaropa, Davao Region, and Caraga with one each. A total of 6,276,280 people or 1,751,776 families were affected by the bad weather in all regions except Eastern Visayas. The region with the most number of affected population was Central Luzon with 2,638,943. Of the total affected population, 122,716 people or 36,660 families were staying in evacuation centers while 80,766 persons or 21,309 families were taking shelter in other places. The extent of damage was reported at P6,500,351,557 for infrastructure, P510,305,972 for agriculture, and P281,660,000 for irrigation systems. A total of 15,309 houses were damaged —13,387 partially and 1,652 totally. Interruptions in power supply, water service, and communication lines were reported. Several airports and seaports became non-operational. A total of 70 passengers and 10 vessels remained stranded. Classes in 1,045 areas and work schedules in 911 areas were suspended due to the threat of the bad weather. A state of calamity was declared in 192 cities and municipalities. These include the entire provinces of Cavite, Bataan, Pampanga, Rizal, Laguna, Oriental Mindoro, and Negros Occidental as well as other cities and municipalities in other provinces: Umingan, Mangaldan, Lingayen, Malasiqui, Calasiao, San Carlos, Binamaley, Aguilar, and Basista in Pangasinan Bauang, La Union Dagupan City, Dagupan Bataan province Pampanga province Calumpit, Balagtas (Bigaa), Paombong, Meycauayan, Marilao, Barangays Matungao and Tibig in Bulakan, Hagonoy, Obando, Marilao, and Guiginto in Bulacan Paniqui, Camiling, and Moncada in Tarlac Masinloc, Zambales Quezon City Marikina Navotas Manila Valenzuela Caloocan Las Piñas Parañaque Cavite province Agoncillo, Nasugbu, San Luis, Tanauan, and Tingloy in Batangas Rizal province Laguna province Oriental Mindoro province Roxas, Palawan Mamburao and Sablayan in Occidental Mindoro Sebaste, Barbaza, and Culasi in Antique Pototan, Iloilo Negros Occidental province Cebu City Assistance worth P514,587,702 has been provided to the victims so far, according to the NDRRMC. —KG, GMA Integrated News

DepEd, DOH aligns curriculum to address HIV spike among Filipino youth

SHERYLIN UNTALAN/GMA Integrated News The Department of Education (DepEd) and the Department of Health (DOH) have collaborated to prepare an aligned curriculum for Filipino learners with the goal of addressing the rise in HIV cases and other critical issues affecting the youth. "Nag-align kami ng curriculum dahil ang findings namin, mas bata ang tinatamaan ng HIV (We aligned the curriculum because our findings show HIV infections among younger Filipinos)," said Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa during a joint field assessment with Education Secretary Sonny Angara on Wednesday. Filipinos aged 15 to 24 now account for 30% of the 57 new daily infections in the country, DOH data from January to March 2025 showed. At the basic education level, this age group overlaps with junior high school learners in Grade 10 and senior high school students from Grades 11 to 12. The cooperation of the two agencies is in line with President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.'s directive to strengthen inter-agency efforts for student health, particularly as classes reopen for School Year 2025–2026. Nutrition, pregnancy, road safety Aside from HIV education, the curriculum now also integrates discussions key health issues on mental health, unplanned pregnancy, road safety, and nutrition. Herbosa noted that these health concerns may also be contributing to the broader learning crisis observed in the country. "Some of it is the cause of learning crisis," he said, adding that, "Some of it is stunting because of undernutrition… Pumapasok, walang pagkain (They come to school without food)." In response, the DepEd has expanded its school feeding program to provide meals not just for undernourished students, but to all young learners at the entry level. The DepEd and DOH are also monitoring and responding to potential health outbreaks in schools, especially with the onset of the rainy season. As cases of HIV and other diseases continue to climb, both agencies reaffirmed their commitment to protecting students not just academically, but physically and emotionally as well. Earlier this moth, the DOH reported that the number of young Filipinos infected with human immunodeficiency virus has increased by 500% prompting the agency to request for the declaration of a national public health emergency for HIV. Herbosa had expressed concern that if the trend is not be stopped, the number of people in the Philippines living with HIV could reach 400,000. Based on available figures as of June 2025, there are 148,831 cases of HIV in the Philippines. The DOH earlier said that in the first three months of the 2025, a total of 5,101 HIV cases were confirmed.
