E-commerce giant celebrates 10 years of serving S'pore

Now one of South-east Asia's leading online marketplaces, Shopee is joining the National Day Parade for the first time to commemorate its local heritage Beneath the sweltering sun on the parade ground, 29-year-old Lee Kai Theng's voice rang out clear and steady: 'Sedia!' In one fluid motion, her comrades behind snapped to attention. Clad in bright orange, they are part of a 46-strong contingent making Shopee's first appearance at this year's National Day Parade (NDP) on Aug 9. For the home-grown company, being part of the nation's 60th birthday celebrations is both an honour and a poignant reminder of its deep local roots. It also serves as an unforgettable way to commemorate Shopee's 10th anniversary. Ms Lee is taking part in the parade for the first time. She was selected to be one of the two contingent commanders just three months into her role as a product management specialist at Shopee. Members of the contingent were selected by the end of April. 'When I heard it, I was surprised,' she recalls. 'I thought: How could a newcomer be a contingent commander, leading others with many years of experience?' The weekly Saturday drills, which began in May, also brought unexpected rewards for Ms Lee. 'It was exciting and a great honour for me to contribute to Shopee's first NDP contingent.' The experience felt like being part of a larger story, she adds. 'I feel proud that we serve not only our customers, but also our community and our country.' Helping local businesses go global Shopee also celebrated the nation's birthday as the main fulfilment partner for the Fly Our Flag initiative . This was a first-of-its-kind collaboration with the NDP 2025 executive committee, where more than 100,000 households redeemed a free Singapore flag through Shopee's islandwide network of collection points ahead of National Day. It was a fitting gesture for a company that has – since pioneering Singapore's mobile-first platform in 2015 – spent the past decade connecting buyers with sellers through e-commerce. Today, Shopee is one of South-east Asia's leading e-commerce platforms, and it has become a household name in Singapore. As it grew from a simple online marketplace into a household name, Shopee has also steadily evolved its support for businesses – from helping small and medium-sized enterprises get online in its early years and guiding them through the challenges of the pandemic to now enabling businesses to scale their operations, locally and across borders. This journey is one that Mr Bhavesh Bhojwani has witnessed up close since joining Shopee in 2018. Starting out in brand acquisition before moving on to support local food and beverage businesses, the 34-year-old saw first-hand how the platform enabled companies to tap new opportunities through e-commerce. Mr Bhavesh Bhojwani (right), assistant manager of business development, has helped businesses, ranging from heartland stores to global brands, to expand operations through Shopee's platform. PHOTO: SHOPEE One of his personal highlights was onboarding home bakers and heartland bakeries to the platform during the circuit breaker, so they could maintain sales despite strict movement restrictions. 'Small bakeries were struggling because they lost their foot traffic, so we got them onboard Shopee and helped them get their products directly to buyers,' he recalls. 'It was very fulfilling to see them coming on board and doing really well on the platform.' The experience reinforced what he enjoys most about his work. He adds: 'I love going on the ground and meeting sellers, and working with a collaborative and dynamic team that has served Singapore for the past 10 years.' Now an assistant manager of business development for Service by Shopee, Mr Bhojwani leads a team that supports global fast-moving consumer goods brands in reaching the Singapore market by handling their backend operations such as fulfilment and logistics. 'This frees up the brands to focus on their core products, marketing and branding,' he says. Shopee's ability to offer such comprehensive end-to-end support stems from its wider ecosystem, allowing it to connect retailers not just to logistics solutions but also to synergistic services like digital payments and other business enablers. Looking ahead, Mr Bhojwani is excited about the new possibilities that new technologies bring to the table. 'I'm quite excited to see how we can explore emerging technologies and data analytics to help the brands,' he says. 'We've seen growing trends like artificial intelligence, and I hope to be part of this.' Unlocking opportunities to help sellers and buyers with AI The potential of artificial intelligence (AI) is exactly what 35-year-old Kelvin Ang, a principal engineer who leads Shopee's AI Solutions team, hopes to unlock. Since joining the company in 2016 as a development operations engineer, Mr Ang has been working behind the scenes to ensure the smooth running of the software and technology behind the app's e-commerce operations. As principal engineer of the AI Solutions team, Mr Kelvin Ang (left) leads efforts to create AI tools that let sellers market their products in a smarter way and manage their orders more efficiently, while giving buyers a more seamless shopping experience. PHOTO: SHOPEE Today, he works on an AI agent platform that not only automates and enhances routine tasks across various departments within Shopee, but also promises to transform the online shopping experience for both retail partners and buyers. For example, businesses can use AI to create marketing content and tap into data to better understand consumer behaviour. Shoppers, meanwhile, benefit from tools like Review Summaries, which condense thousands of reviews into clear highlights to make better informed purchasing decisions. There is also an AI Shopping Assistant that curates personalised product recommendations. 'I was lucky to witness the transformation of Shopee from its infancy to what it is today,' Mr Ang says. 'It makes me happy to see how we can keep bringing our buyers and sellers closer by lowering the cost of entry for sellers, while helping buyers find what brings the most value to them.' Like Ms Lee and Mr Bhojwani, Mr Ang has redeemed the national flag via the Shopee platform. This National Day, they join fellow Singaporeans in proudly flying the flag and celebrating as one.
