The Star Wars cinematic universe is returning to Seattle in a big way on the big screen in September with a two-week celebration of the entire film franchise at SIFF Cinema Downtown. The marathon screening will feature 11 titles, from the original 1977 classic 'A New Hope' to the standalone Star Wars stories 'Rogue One' and 'Solo.' The first weekend, starting Sept. 5, will show the films in chronological order, 'from Anakin's podracing days to Rey's final rise,' SIFF said on its website. The second weekend will feature the films as they were released and first seen by the world. 'Relive the shocking reveals and the original trilogy magic as they unfolded across decades,' SIFF said. Previously known as the Cinerama, the theater originally opened in 1963, just a year after Seattle hosted the World's Fair. It was rescued by the late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen in 1988, and put through a multi-million-dollar renovation before reopening in 1999 as a high-tech destination for movies. The theater has played host to much-hyped Star Wars events and film premieres in the past, including in 2015 for a full-day screening of the franchise's seven films at the time. SIFF Cinema Downtown took on its new name in 2023 after Seattle International Film Festival, a nonprofit film and education organization, purchased the theater from the estate of Allen and reopened it after it was shuttered during the pandemic. Tickets are on sale now for 'Star Wars: The Ultimate Cinematic Marathon' and priced at $22 per film ($19 for SIFF members; $21 seniors, students; $17 child). More Protests Break Out Against Proposed Siang Dam in Arunachal Pradesh

New Delhi: On Monday, July 14, villagers from three districts in Arunachal Pradesh participated in a rally at the village of Geku in Upper Siang, taking out a peaceful march against the proposed Siang Upper Multipurpose Project, a nearly 12,000-megawatt hydropower project that is being mooted across the Siang river in northeastern Arunachal Pradesh. Local communities have been agitating against the hydropower project and dam – being implemented by the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) – for several years now, fearing displacement from their ancestral lands which they associate culturally with, and the environmental impacts that the dam could cause in the area. Videos of the rally showed at least a thousand people gathered at a ground in Geku and later undertaking a protest march through village roads, shouting slogans such as 'We want justice', 'Remove the armed forces', 'No dam, no PFR' and ' Bharat mata ki jai '. The peaceful march occurred in the presence of police and armed forces deployment in the area. Protests against the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project. Mishra, Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Siang Indigenous Farmers' Forum (SIFF) – on behalf of the Project Affected Families (PAFs) and residents of all submergence villages – expressed their 'strong opposition' to the project as well as the Pre-Feasibility Report (PFR) activities that the government was conducting without peoples' consent. The letter said that claims made by Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Pema Khandu, on his official Facebook and Twitter accounts, suggesting that the villagers of Riga have given their consent, 'are factually incorrect' and that the village and tribal council had not given their consent, and that no public meeting was at the village by any concerned authority. 'We are deeply concerned about the ongoing human rights violations and the lack of effective grievance redressal mechanisms for the affected communities. Despite our repeated efforts, the concerns of the submergence villages have not been adequately addressed by the state authorities. Instead, a false narrative, propagated by the Hon'ble Chief Minister and other MLAs such as Shri Ojing Tasing, portrays a misleading picture of community support for the project,' the letter claimed. It urged the principal secretary to 'present the accurate ground reality to the Prime Minister', including the 'widespread opposition' to the project at the meeting being conducted on Tuesday, July 15. 'We sincerely hope that the concerns of the PAFs and submergence villages will be prioritized, and that no decisions will be taken based on misleading representations,' it urged. Another letter by the Youth Wing of the SIFF to the principal secretary, on July 14, highlighted that people are on an 'indefinite peaceful protest' against the deployment of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) for the PFR of the project. Condemning the 'unconstitutional practice', the letter added that they, the Adi people of Siang, 'do not want to dam our Aane Siang [the big Siang river] nor be displaced from our motherland'. The Adi are one of the major tribal communities who live in the area where the Siang dam is proposed. The letter urged that the project proposal be cancelled and all activities linked to the project, 'We shall continue protesting until our demand is fulfilled,' it stated. Protesters also burnt down a hanging bridge to prevent the army from entering the village, as The Wire reported earlier. Apart from concerns like displacement, loss of homes and agricultural lands, as well as the environmental impacts such as the loss of rich biodiversity, the Upper Siang project – set to be India's largest hydropower project, if built – is also proposed in a seismically-active area.

Riga villagers support Siang dam MoU for pre-feasibility report

1 2 Itanagar: In a relief for the Arunachal Pradesh govt, residents of Riga village in Siang district have given their consent and support in signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the pre-feasibility report (PFR) of the proposed Siang Upper Multipurpose Project. The decision was made during a meeting between Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Pema Khandu and representatives of Riga village, led by panchayati raj and rural development minister Ojing Tasing, in Itanagar on Friday. Taking to X, Khandu wrote, "Heartfelt thanks to the people of Riga for their consent and support in signing the MoU for the Pre-Feasibility Report of the proposed Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP), a step taken in the larger national interest." "Your trust inspires us. We remain firmly committed to fulfilling all developmental aspirations of the community," he wrote. The CM further wrote that "as one of the largest Adi villages in the Siang belt, Riga holds a vital place in our collective journey toward progress and prosperity". Tasing said, "Yes, people have given their consent for a PFR for the Siang project." Since the proposal to set up a mega dam on the Siang first came up in 2017, the proposal drew opposition from residents. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Đây có thể là thời điểm tốt nhất để giao dịch vàng trong 5 năm qua IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo The project, with an estimated installed capacity of 11,000MW, has been facing opposition from local communities, since the proposal first came up in 2017, due to concerns about displacement, livelihood loss and environmental impacts. The Siang Indigenous Farmers Forum (SIFF), which is leading the movement against the dam project, claimed that it is meaningless, as people from 27 affected villages are against the project. Only 25% of Riga is affected, SIFF president Lamok Padun said. He accused the state govt of pushing for the project by forcing BJP workers from Riga village to agree to sign the MoU.

Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele has confirmed that Solomon King FC is one of the 13 clubs now awaiting final selection by the OFC, who will be annoucing the teams that will be part of the new league in September. The OFC Professional League is set to kick-off in January 2026. In a statement, Manele said that a new partnership forged between the Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF) and the Brisbane-based Wynnum Wolves Football Club would help the new club. "In what is described as a major boost for Solomon Islands football, the partnership between SIFF and Wynnum Wolves FC will see the establishment of the country's first professional football club ahead of the newly introduced Oceania Football Confederation Pro League," the statement said. "Under this landmark partnership, SIFF will form a team to compete in the OFC Pro League, to be named Solomon King FC. "Solomon King FC will be the nation's first professional football club, comprising 18 local players and six international recruits. The team will be based in both Honiara and Brisbane, Australia, and will play matches across six different venues within the Pacific region. "Players will also have potential pathways to the German Bundesliga through Wynnum Wolves FC's relationship with Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund." Manele expressed his appreciation to the Wynnum Wolves FC's President Rabieh Krayem. He also met with SIFF President Donald Marahare and SIFF chief executive Leonard Paia. OFC Professional League project manager Stuart Larman told RNZ Pacific on Tuesday that the Solomon Islands club is one of the teams now in the final phase. "Considering the club have announced their partnership, we can acknowledge that they Solomon Kings are one of the clubs that have applied to be in the OFCPL and that their application will be reviewed, as with all applicant clubs, after the 18 July deadline," Larman said, responding to queries raised with him. "As the only applicant club from the Solomon Islands, they will need to meet all the minimum requirements to attain a Club License to be recommended to the OFC Exco for entry into the OFCPL 2026." The OFC says there are currently 13 clubs from around the region vying to be selected, with the final eight teams expected to be known in August, with licenses to be given in September. In May, the confederation confirmed that there are six OFC Member Associations who have clubs in the list, with two from Fiji, two from Papua New Guinea, one each from Solomon Islands, Tahiti, and Vanuatu, with the other two clubs from Australia. "We expect the quality of submissions to continue at the same level as we have seen in the first phase of the Club Application Process," Larman told the media in May. The OFC Club Licensing Committee will pass its recommendations to the OFC Executive Committee in August and the eight selected clubs will be confirmed in September. The competition will run from early January until the end of May, with each club playing a minimum of 17 matches. There will be five circuit series rounds at various Pacific locations in a double round-robin format before the teams are split into two playoff groups, Leaders and Challengers.
