SECI sees record-low price of ₹55.75 per kg in first green ammonia auction
The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) has achieved a record-low price of ₹55.75 per kg for green ammonia in its first-ever auction under the National Green Hydrogen Mission's SIGHT Scheme (Mode 2A). This holds significance as low-priced green ammonia is pivotal for India to reduce reliance on imported natural gas for fertiliser production, lower carbon emissions, and enhance energy security. It can also significantly cut down the country's fertiliser subsidy burden, promote agricultural sustainability, and drive technological innovation. This auction covers the supply of 75,000 tonnes per annum of green ammonia to Paradeep Phosphates Limited, Odisha. It is the first in a planned series of 13 auctions over the coming month, under a tender aggregating a cumulative procurement capacity of 724,000 tonnes a year. The discovered price translates to approximately $641 a tonne, a substantial drop from the previously discovered price of Rs 100.28 a kg ($1,153 per tonne) in the H2Global auction in 2024. With Grey Ammonia prices touching $515 per tonne, as of last March, this 10-year fixed-price bid provides strong economic rationale for offtakers to initiate their clean energy transition journey, according to an official statement. Green ammonia is crucial for India's energy transition due to its potential to decarbonize various sectors, enhance energy security, and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. It can be a key component in fertilizer production, replacing fossil fuel-based ammonia, and also serves as a storage and transport medium for green hydrogen. By producing green ammonia domestically, India can reduce its dependence on imports, lower the trade deficit, and create new employment opportunities. SECI, acting as the intermediary procurer, has anchored the auction under the guidance of the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE), with support from the Department of Fertilizers and the participating offtakers. "This price discovery marks a watershed moment in India's Green Hydrogen journey and reinforces the country's vision of becoming a global hub for Green Hydrogen production. The auction witnessed intense competition, reflecting the strong investor and developer confidence in India's green energy transition framework," the statement read. "With robust payment security mechanisms in place, the scheme unlocks confidence across the value chain and enables large-scale adoption of Green Ammonia and other derivatives," it added.

First green ammonia auction under SIGHT scheme discovers record low price of ₹55.75/kg: MNRE
New Delhi: The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) on Wednesday said the first-ever auction conducted by the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) for procurement of Green Ammonia under the National Green Hydrogen Mission's SIGHT Scheme (Mode-2A) has discovered a record low price of ₹55.75 per kg for a 10-year fixed-price contract . In a statement, MNRE said the auction was for the supply of 75,000 metric tonnes per annum of Green Ammonia to Paradeep Phosphates Limited , Odisha. It is the first in a planned series of 13 auctions over the coming month under a tender aggregating a cumulative procurement capacity of 7.24 lakh MT annually. The discovered price translates to about USD 641 per MT, lower than the previously discovered price of ₹100.28/kg (USD 1,153/MT) in the H2Global auction in 2024. With Grey Ammonia prices at USD 515/MT as of March 2025, MNRE said the fixed price under the current bid offers a cost rationale for offtakers to begin their clean energy transition. The ministry said SECI acted as the intermediary procurer for the supply arrangement, anchoring the auction under the guidance of MNRE with support from the Department of Fertilizers and the participating offtakers. According to the statement, the auction saw competitive bidding, indicating strong investor and developer participation in India's green energy transition framework. MNRE said the scheme's payment security mechanisms are designed to create confidence across the value chain and support the large-scale adoption of Green Ammonia and other derivatives.

The discovered price translates to around $641/tonne, a substantial drop from the previously discovered price of $1,153/tonne in the H2Global auction, it said. With grey Ammonia prices reaching $515/tonne as of March 2025, this 10-year fixed-price bid provides strong economic rationale for off takers to initiate their clean energy transition journey, SECI said. Live Events The tender called for the production and supply of 724,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually across 13 fertilizer plants in this tranche which were listed in the tender. Some of the procurers enlisted in the bidding document were Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative (IFFCO) in Kandla, Madras Fertilisers' Manali and Chennai units, Indorama India in Haldia, Mangalore Chemicals & Fertilisers' Panambur unit and Coromandel International 's Visakhapatnam unit. The reverse auction for price discovery is being done separately for each plant and in phases because of the complexity of bid evaluation, according to an industry official. SECI anchored the demand aggregation and will sign long-term offtake agreements, providing producers with market certainty over a 10-year contract period. The tender was issued in June 2024 and the last date was July 10 after many extensions over the year. The government is offering financial incentives under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, with Production Linked Incentives (PLI) of Rs 8.82/kg, Rs 7.06/kg, and Rs 5.30/kg for the first three years respectively, amounting to a total support of Rs 1,533.4 crore. India consumes approximately 17-19 million tonnes of ammonia annually, with more than 50% of its hydrogen requirement used in fertilizer production . However, most of this is derived from imported natural gas. Producing green hydrogen emits less than 2 kg of CO₂ per kilogram, compared to up to 12 kg CO₂ from conventional grey hydrogen, according to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.
