Brian Harman won last week's Valero Texas Open using a new putter, which itself was noteworthy because the 2023 British Open champion had been playing his TaylorMade Daddy Long Legs mallet for years, but equipment junkies took extra notice because the putter he switched to was a prototype, zero-torque TaylorMade SK-ZT. The club has not been made available to the public, and Harmon did not release many details about it, but TaylorMade told me the putter has 2.5 degrees of loft, a 70-degree lie angle, and is 35.25 inches long. It is fitted with a 15-inch Winn grip.
According to TaylorMade, Harman, who plays left-handed, tends to aim slightly right and then push putts back online, but with the new putter, it was 'point and shoot' for him. Harman's old Daddy Long Legs putter has a 67-degree lie angle, so this putter is more upright and allows Harman to get his eyes more over the ball, and the Pure Roll insert in the SK-ZT is softer than the insert in his old putter.
The biggest difference between the two putters, aside from the size difference, is the balance. The Daddy Long Legs is face balanced, while the SK-ZT is a zero-torque putter, so it has toe-up balance and is designed to keep the face square to Harman's stroke path throughout his swing.
"I looked at my stats from last year, and I probably had the best iron game of my career, approach to the green, andprobably my worst year from 10 to 20 feet putting," Harmon said after winning. "So still really good inside 10 feet, but that section there (10-20 feet) is where I was getting all my looks and I wasn't making any of them. I had toyed with the idea of switching putters for a while. I picked that one up on Tuesday this week, it felt really good and it rolls nice, just kind of freed me up a little bit."
