Brian Harman won last week's Valero Texas Open using a new putter, which itself was noteworthy because the 2023 British Open champion had been playing his TaylorMade Daddy Long Legs mallet for years, but equipment junkies took extra notice because the putter he switched to was a prototype, zero-torque TaylorMade SK-ZT. The club has not been made available to the public, and Harmon did not release many details about it, but TaylorMade told me the putter has 2.5 degrees of loft, a 70-degree lie angle, and is 35.25 inches long. It is fitted with a 15-inch Winn grip.
According to TaylorMade, Harman, who plays left-handed, tends to aim slightly right and then push putts back online, but with the new putter, it was 'point and shoot' for him. Harman's old Daddy Long Legs putter has a 67-degree lie angle, so this putter is more upright and allows Harman to get his eyes more over the ball, and the Pure Roll insert in the SK-ZT is softer than the insert in his old putter.
The biggest difference between the two putters, aside from the size difference, is the balance. The Daddy Long Legs is face balanced, while the SK-ZT is a zero-torque putter, so it has toe-up balance and is designed to keep the face square to Harman's stroke path throughout his swing.
"I looked at my stats from last year, and I probably had the best iron game of my career, approach to the green, andprobably my worst year from 10 to 20 feet putting," Harmon said after winning. "So still really good inside 10 feet, but that section there (10-20 feet) is where I was getting all my looks and I wasn't making any of them. I had toyed with the idea of switching putters for a while. I picked that one up on Tuesday this week, it felt really good and it rolls nice, just kind of freed me up a little bit."
As I told you recently, if you are not happy about the way you're putting, it might be time to talk with a custom fitter and see whether a zero-torque putter like a Bettinardi Antidote, Evnroll Zero, Odyssey Ai ONE Square 2 Square, L.A.B. OZ.1 or PXG Allan is right for you. And now it would seem a TaylorMade zero-torque offering is coming soon.

PXG Debuts Sleek Double Black Finish for Its PXG Allan ZT Putter – A Bold New Look for Zero Torque Precision

Expanded Zero Torque Putter Lineup is Engineered for Personalized Performance and Greater Consistency with Less Effort Scottsdale, AZ, June 05, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- PXG®, the custom fitting-focused golf equipment company founded by Marine Corps Veteran Bob Parsons, is proud to introduce a striking new Double Black finish for one of its most innovative putters: the PXG Allan® ZT. The brand new PXG Allan ZT Double Black putter features a distinctive all-black aesthetic that enhances the sleek, modern design and offers the practical benefit of reducing glare at address. At the core of the PXG Allan ZT Double Black is PXG's patented Zero Torque (ZT) Balance Technology, engineered to eliminate the twisting forces that typically compromise face control during the putting stroke. The innovative S-hosel positions the shaft axis just above the center of gravity, helping golfers – regardless of stroke type – deliver a square face at impact with greater consistency and less effort. Constructed with a thin-walled, hollow-body design and injected with PXG's proprietary S COR™ polymer, the putter provides exceptional feel, vibration dampening, and forgiveness. This advanced structure also allows PXG to produce one of the thinnest faces in golf—just 0.055'—for enhanced sound and energy transfer. The signature Pyramid Face Pattern further improves roll consistency by optimizing contact with a ball's dimples, aiding in better launch, roll, and distance control. Additionally, Precision Weighting Technology in the sole gives golfers and fitters the ability to fine-tune the clubhead's weight and balance to fit individual preferences. Adding to its usability, the PXG Allan ZT Double Black includes a built-in Pick Up Pocket™, allowing players to easily retrieve a ball from the green—no bending required. The putter comes standard with the PXG M16® Stability Shaft, a game-changing upgrade for golfers looking for more control on putts from any distance, especially those outside of ten feet. Is this Phil Mickelson's last U.S. Open? Here's what he said ahead of LIV Golf event

Is this Phil Mickelson's last U.S. Open? Here's what he said ahead of LIV Golf event For the third straight major, there's a chance for a player to complete the career Grand Slam. Rory McIlroy became the sixth member of the exclusive club with his victory at the Masters in April, while Jordan Spieth missed the cut in his ninth attempt to win the final leg he needs at the PGA Championship in May. Now, it's Phil Mickelson's turn to try again to win the elusive U.S. Open at Oakmont next week. The six-time major winner has six runner-up finishes at his country's national championship but has never lifted the hardware. Could this be his final shot at glory? Mickelson is in the final year of his five-year exemption for winning the PGA Championship at Kiawah in 2021. Asked during his pre-tournament press conference on Wednesday ahead of this week's LIV Virginia event at the Robert Trent Jones Club in Manassas, Virginia, Mickelson addressed the possibility that this could be his final U.S. Open. 'There's a high likelihood that it will be, but I haven't really thought about it too much,' he said. Mickelson has struggled since winning PGA Championship Mickelson is trying to regain the mojo of his thrilling PGA Championship win at Kiawah, when he became the oldest major winner. But since jumping to LIV, his game has abandoned him with the exception of a back-door runner-up finish at the 2023 Masters. Mickelson finished 39th in the individual points race in 2022, improving slightly to 33rd in '23 and dropping to 50th a year ago. It's also been dragging down his team's performance. 'I want to be realistic,' said the HyFlyers captain. 'I want this team to succeed. I don't want to hold it back. If I'm not an asset, if I'm not helping, if I'm holding it back, then it's time for me to move on and get somebody else in here who is going to really help the team win and succeed.' But Mickelson, who finished third at LIV Mexico before missing the cut at the Masters and PGA Championship, is the eternal optimist and is using this week to get ready for his 34th start at the U.S. Open. 'What I have thought about is how similar this week's course is set up to what we'll see next week. We have greens that are rolling 14 to 15 on the Stimpmeter, just like we will next week. We have contours, undulations, just like we will next week. I think it's a great way to prepare for next week without minimizing the effects of this week because this is the first tournaments of our second half of LIV, and we all need and want and are working hard to getting off to a good start and making the second half of LIV great," he said. 'Short game, touch, chipping around the greens, rough, speed, lag drills and speed and touch on the greens, all of that's critical here same thing as next week. It couldn't be a better spot to get ready.' What are Phil Mickelson's upcoming options? Mickelson has missed the cut at the U.S. Open in his last three attempts to complete the career Grand Slam. While his exempt status into the U.S. Open ends with this year's edition, it's possible the USGA could offer him a special exemption in 2026. Before winning the 2021 PGA, Mickelson had been granted a special exemption, but then didn't need it after his win. He could also participate in 36-hole Final Qualifying. Asked if he would consider attempting to qualify, Mickelson said, 'I don't know. I don't know. I haven't thought that far.'

Hey Maple Leafs fans, Masters champion Rory McIlroy has a message for you

If you look hard enough, you can see the similarities between Rory McIlroy and Toronto Maple Leafs fans. Both are all too familiar with the chase of an elusive title, the pent up emotion from a collapse that always felt inevitable and the demons the pile up as someone else ends up raising the trophy in the end. The major difference, of course, is that McIlroy conquered those demons when he won his first Masters title in April, ending an 11-year major championship drought. Now in Toronto for the RBC Canadian Open , the world's No. 2 ranked men's golfer hopes the Leafs can do the same. 'If I can win the Masters, then the Leafs can win the Stanley Cup,' McIlroy said Wednesday from TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley, according to TSN's Bob Weeks . The two-time winner of the RBC Canadian Open was gifted a Leafs jersey by MLSE CEO Keith Pelley , who used to head the PGA European Tour. Rory McIlroy playing RBC Canadian Open Pro-Am with Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment CEO Keith Pelley (former European Tour chief). Presented Rory with a Maple Leafs jersey. So hey, the Leafs are relevant in June after all. McIlroy's win i n a sudden-death playoff hole at Augusta National made him the sixth golfer with the career Grand Slam. But the 36-year-old wasn't sure if that day would ever come. 'There were points in my career where I didn't know if I would have this nice garment over my shoulders,' McIlroy said after the win, referring to the green jacket. Generations of Leafs fans can surely relate. This year's Game 7 loss to the Florida Panthers in the second round of the playoffs will keep the Stanley Cup drought at 58 years and counting. At last year's Canadian Open, McIlroy told Adam Stanley of Sportsnet that it would be 'amazing' to attend a Leafs game if they were in the playoffs during the 2025 event. The good news for McIlroy and his fellow Leafs fans is, there's always next year.
