Couldn't miss once in a lifetime opportunity: Audience on state's 1st SKAT show

1 2 3 Patna: It was a once in a lifetime opportunity for most of Patnaites on Wednesday morning. And that is why people thronged not only the venue along JP Ganga, but booked their seats on the rooftops of nearby buildings as well as treetops to witness a live air show by the world-famous Surya Kiran Aerobatics Team (SKAT) of the Indian Air Force, organised for the first time in Bihar. Residents, young and old, men and women, not only from different walks of life but different parts of state as well, waited with bated breath for the scintillating aerobatics display, which finally began around 10.30am amid huge cheers. The size of the crowd can be gauged from the fact that the entire stretch from JP Ganga Path towards Gol Ghar was jam-packed and vehicles moved at snails' pace when people started returning after the conclusion of the air show. Surendra Kumar (65) had reached Patna all the way from Nalanda only to watch the unique aerobatics displays. "I have watched their performances only on television till now, so I decided not to miss the chance, and see them live," said an enthusiastic Surendra, briskly walking towards the venue. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Google Brain Co-Founder Andrew Ng, Recommends: Read These 5 Books And Turn Your Life Around Blinkist: Andrew Ng's Reading List Undo Another elderly person, claiming to be a descendent of Babu Veer Kunwar Singh — in whose honour the air show was held on Shaurya Diwas — said it was a matter of great pride that SKAT performance was held for the first time in Bihar on the occasion, also known as Vijyotsav, to commemorate the victory of Kunwar Singh over the British on the same day during the 1857 revolution. Homemakers Sunita and Gudiya, who came to watch the aerobatics displays with their families, said the event would remain etched in their memories. "It was awesome! We knew that there would certainly be something very special, but what we saw cannot be summarised in words. We are very lucky to have got the opportunity to watch such an incredible air show," said Sunita. Among the audience were many school students who wanted pictures with the SKAT crew, who later obliged them. A group of school students, when asked about their favourite manoeuvre, said all the aerobatics displays were mind-blowing. "If the tricolour trail filled us with a sense of patriotism, the heart formation was lovely," said Deepak, a Class XI student.

Surya Kiran team paints Patna skies in tricolour, win hearts with heart formation

1 2 3 4 Patna: Amid the roar of jet engines and gasps of an enthused audience, the nine-aircraft Surya Kiran Aerobatics Team (SKAT) of Indian Air Force (IAF) painted the Patna skies in tricolour on Wednesday on the occasion of Shaurya Diwas , celebrated in honour of 1857 hero Babu Veer Kunwar Singh . After leaving trails of saffron, white and green on the skyline above JP Ganga Path, the aerobatics team also painted the skies with a huge "heart and cupid" formation, symbolising their respect for Veer Kunwar Singh — who defeated the British in 1857 at the age of 80 years — and love for the residents. The IAF's Akash Ganga skydiving team, however, did not perform on the day due to some technical glitches, said BJP MP Rajiv Pratap Rudi, who was present on the occasion. Each of the manoeuvres showcased by the highly-skilled aerobatics team received resounding applause from the excited audience comprising people from all age groups and sections of society. The team impressed the gathering with awe-inspiring formation sets, including most famous 360-degree movement display by the planes, sudden diving and moving in different directions, reassembling in one row from different directions, and the disciplined and perfect synchronisation of the jets for 'A' formation. It was a splendid moment when the SKAT jets left the tricolour trails behind up in the sky amid cheers of the audience and a patriotic fervour. And when the nine fighter jets formed the heart shape around the end of the air show, they truly won the hearts of the residents, many also witnessing the splendour from the rooftops of their building in nearby areas. Kanwal Jeet Sandhu from SKAT, who was doing a live commentary of the performances, explained the aerobatic displays and manoeuvrings of the fighter jets in easily comprehensible terms for the audience. She was soon joined by BJP MP Rudi. Wing Commander Arjun Patel, who is part of the SKAT, said the aerobatics team, unique in the world and only one of its kind in Asia, was known as the "ambassador of IAF". "The air shows were organised in various cities across the country in order to display the might of the IAF, and also encourage and motivate youngsters to join the armed forces," he said, expressing happiness on witnessing the huge over-joyed Patna crowd. "We were equally excited to perform in front of such an enthusiastic and appreciative gathering."

US jury rules for Danish tax authority in fraud case

NEW YORK, Feb 10 (Reuters) - A Manhattan federal jury on Monday ruled in favor of Denmark's tax authority, in the first U.S. civil trial concerning the country's effort to recoup about $2.1 billion of tax refunds it claims were obtained through fraud, court records show. Jurors sided with SKAT, the Danish equivalent of the U.S. Internal Revenue Service. Further information was not immediately available. The trial arose from complex arbitrage transactions known as "cum-ex" trades whose accused mastermind, British hedge fund trader Sanjay Shah, was sentenced by a Danish court in December to 12 years in prison after being found guilty of fraud. SKAT said pension plans used the trading strategy between 2012 and 2015 to make it falsely appear they bought tens of billions of dollars of Danish companies' stock, and then claimed refunds on taxes supposedly paid on dividends. Lawyers for SKAT and for the pension plan defendants did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Jurors reached their verdict on the second day of deliberations. The trial began on January 7. Get a look at the day ahead in U.S. and global markets with the Morning Bid U.S. newsletter. Sign up here.
