BCAS orders additional check at airports amid rising India-Pak tensions
As tensions continue to escalate between India and Pakistan following Operation Sindoor, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) on Thursday directed all airlines to conduct Secondary Ladder Point Checks (SLPC) at all airports across the country, Business Standard has learnt. SLPC is a security procedure in which airline staff carry out an additional screening of passengers and their hand baggage just before boarding the aircraft, following the primary security check by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). This secondary check is typically conducted near the boarding gate or at the ladder/aerobridge. A government official told the newspaper that the BCAS informed airport operators and airlines on Thursday that the SLPC must be implemented across the country. An airport official confirmed the development, adding that the airport operator's own staff could assist airline personnel during SLPC. As the situation between the two countries is "sensitive", personnel from the CISF may also support the airline and airport staff in carrying out the second security check, he added. Indian armed forces on Wednesday conducted Operation Sindoor, which targeted multiple terror camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu & Kashmir. At least 16 airports across northern and western India were shut on Wednesday. They will remain closed till the morning of May 10. This shutdown has resulted in the cancellation of around 850 passenger flights. The affected airports -- shut until 5.29 am on May 10 -- include Jammu, Srinagar, Leh, Jodhpur, Amritsar, Bhuj, Jamnagar, Chandigarh, Rajkot, Bikaner, Dharamshala, Gwalior, Kishangarh, Rajkot, Shimla, and Hindon, according to statements from Indian carriers.

India-Pakistan tensions: BCAS asks airlines to implement Secondary Ladder Point Check at airports
Amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan after the latter launched eight missiles at Satwari, Samba, RS Pura and Arnia sectors of Jammu and Kashmir, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) on Thursday instructed all airlines and airports across the country to enhance security measures, reported ANI citing Ministry of Civil Aviation sources. According to the ANI report, the BCAS directed the airports to implement Secondary Ladder Point Check (SLPC), ban visitors' entry to terminal buildings and deploy Air Marshals at appropriate areas. Soon after the BCAS direction arrived, Air India also issued a travel advisory for passengers, asking them to arrive at their respective airports at least three hours prior to scheduled departure to ensure smooth check-in and boarding. It added that the check-in closes 75 minutes before departure. The Secondary Ladder Point Check is a secondary-level security procedure, which is maintained by airlines. Under this, staff frisk passengers and their hand luggage just before boarding the aircraft following the initial security check by the CISF. This process is undertaken by the airlines, which increase security before passengers board buses to reach the aircraft or at the aerobridge in situations with high security alerts. The main purpose of SLPC is to provide an extra layer of screening beyond the primary CISF security check. The airline staff use hand-held metal detectors to check passengers and their carry-on bags, just like CISF personnel do at airports. Whenever there are high security alerts, especially during Republic Day, Independence Day, and tensions at international borders, the airline staff implements the SLPC. This is done only after BCAS mandates airlines to implement the SLPC. In Jammu, eyewitnesses reported loud explosions and sirens, while a blackout was enforced in Kishtwar. Sirens were also heard throughout Kishtwar. Meanwhile, a blackout has also been enforced in Akhnoor of Jammu Division.
