SUPER JUNIOR Siwon Under Fire For Alleged Homophobia After Recent Controversial Actions
In recent years, K-pop fans have become increasingly critical of how idols approach LGBTQ+ topics. This scrutiny grows sharper when an idol has a history of controversy. Online communities are quick to call out behaviour they view as performative or dismissive, especially when it comes from someone with past accusations of homophobia or transphobia. That's exactly what happened with SUPER JUNIOR's (슈퍼주니어) Choi Siwon (최시원). During a recent concert in Tokyo, he had a brief on-stage interaction with NCT's (엔시티) Jaemin (나재민). While some fans saw the moment as harmless or even heartwarming, others didn't. For them, it brought Siwon's past back into focus and reignited long-standing concerns about where he truly stands on LGBTQ+ issues. At the 'SMTOWN LIVE 2025' concert on 10th August (Sunday), Siwon was seen holding the younger idol's hand as they spoke on stage. The brief moment quickly gained attention online. While many fans found the gesture sweet, others reacted differently. One viral tweet reignited backlash, calling Siwon a 'homophobe' and accusing him of being 'gay for pay' or interacting with someone of the same gender for fan service. This criticism isn't new because it actually draws from a history of controversy that spans over a decade. When Siwon was more active on Twitter, he often shared personal views that sparked debate. In one instance, he retweeted a pastor's statement claiming that gay marriage 'doesn't exist.' The message also supported Kim Davis, the American who notoriously refused to issue a marriage license to a same-sex couple. After facing widespread backlash, Siwon apologised in a series of tweets. He expressed regret and said he felt ashamed for sharing the post. In 2022, further backlash followed when a leaked message from Siwon on the fan messaging app Bubble was seen as transphobic. He had shared a meme based on a scene from the film 'Titanic' (1997), in which a character lies to save his life. In the edited version, Siwon replaced the dialogue with the phrase 'I'm trans', a move many saw as mocking transgender people. This incident added to a growing list of controversies, including Siwon's vocal support for conservative political figures like Ronald Reagan and Donald Trump, as well as his take on the Israel-Palestine conflict. Against this backdrop, his interaction with Jaemin has left many fans uneasy. Fans argue this isn't the first time Siwon has performed closeness with other male idols for attention, with many saying the interaction feels especially disingenuous given his history. Part of the Big 4 agencies in South Korea for K-pop, SM Entertainment's upcoming SMTOWN Live concert in Mexico is drawing heavy criticism from netizens. Many have been urging the agency to cancel the show altogether — just days before it's set to take place. Why one may ask? It's because of the low turnout of fans to the concert. Scheduled for May 9, 2025, at Estadio GNP Seguros in Mexico City, the concert is part of SM's ongoing 30th anniversary world tour, which kicked off in Seoul this January. However, as the tour expands globally, the response appears to be underwhelming. Despite tickets being on sale since mid-December 2024, the 65,000-seat venue remains largely unsold. This is for the Mexico concert that will be held on May 9th... The disappointing turnout has sparked widespread backlash online. Many netizens have voiced concern for the idols, who are expected to endure a grueling 14-hour flight from Seoul to Mexico City — only to perform again at SMTOWN Live in Los Angeles just two days later. As frustration grows, some fans are calling for a complete boycott of the tour, accusing SM Entertainment of mismanaging its artists and neglecting fan interests. Mexican fans weigh in Fans in Mexico have cited several reasons for the low ticket sales — most notably the incomplete group lineups. Red Velvet is expected to perform with only three members following Wendy and Yeri's departure from SM, while Girls' Generation's Taeyeon is absent from the roster. Only a few soloists from SHINee and EXO are confirmed to perform, and the inclusion of AI artist naevis and the yet-to-debut boy group SMTR25 has drawn further criticism. The problem with @SMTOWNGLOBAL 's SM TOWN in MEXICO CITY is NOT that the fans dont wanna go or can't afford it, is the fact that you're bringing incomplete groups, incomplete and poor setlists, you shorten the stage, shorten the time, chose an awful hour to start, With 17 acts reportedly scheduled to perform starting at 8:00 PM, fans anticipate that each artist will only be allotted two to three songs. Given that many of these artists have recently held or are planning solo world tours, fans are questioning whether the concert is worth the high ticket prices. Not just Mexico — Even LA and London SMTOWN Live concerts in both Los Angeles and London have also faced sluggish sales. While the London show — set for June 28 — has reportedly sold out its floor seats and most other sections, overall demand remains lukewarm. In Los Angeles, tickets were recently offered for as little as $30 USD through vouchers distributed at a hello82 pop-up event.
