Govt sees coal gasification as big step for cleaner fuels

New Delhi: The Ministry of Coal has stepped up efforts to promote coal gasification as part of the government's policy to switch to cleaner fuels , greener technologies, and a long-term vision for sustainable and inclusive growth. "Coal gasification transforms solid coal into syngas - a mix of carbon monoxide, hydrogen, and carbon dioxide - unlocking cleaner fuels, chemicals like methanol and ammonia, and reducing emissions," the Coal Ministry said on Tuesday. The Ministry sees coal gasification as "a step toward energy self-reliance and a cleaner industrial future" as it produces cleaner fuels, chemical feedstocks and lower emissions. Coal is one of the most abundant natural resources in the country. Coal gasification technology enables conversion of coal into syngas (synthetic gas), which can be used to produce downstream products like methanol, ammonium nitrate, synthetic natural gas (SNG) and fertilisers, etc. Coal gasification technology provides an alternative use of coal, promoting environmental sustainability to align with the vision of developed India 2047, a senior official said. The government has approved an outlay of ₹8,500 crore as financial incentive, for promotion of coal gasification projects for both government PSUs as well as private sector companies. Leading Maharatna public sector companies Coal India Limited and GAIL (India) Limited (GAIL) have signed a landmark joint venture agreement for setting up a Coal to Synthetic Natural Gas plant using surface coal gasification technology. The plant to come up in the Raniganj area of Eastern Coalfields Limited in West Bengal is expected to produce 80,000 Nm3 per hour of SNG. The annual production is slated at 633.6 million Nm3 per hour, which will require 1.9 million tonnes (mts) of coal to be supplied by Coal India Ltd (CIL). The synergy and partnership of the two corporate giants is a big step towards achieving the goals of the National Coal Gasification Mission, which facilitates the utilisation of the chemical properties of coal. Earlier this year, the Ministry of Coal announced that it has issued Letters of Award (LOAs) to applicants selected under Category II of the ₹8,500 crore Coal Gasification Incentive Scheme aimed at reducing the country's carbon emissions and strengthening energy security. Jindal Steel and Power Limited's 2MMTPA coal gasification project at Angul in Odisha, has been awarded ₹569.05 crore in financial incentives. The ₹3,793 crore project will convert coal into Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) through coal gasification while also setting up a carbon capture and utilisation plant designed to capture 30 TPD of CO2 for conversion into valuable products. New Era Cleantech Solution Private Limited has been given a financial incentive of ₹1,000 crore for its coal gasification project in Bhadravati, Chandrapur, Maharashtra. Greta Energy Limited has also been awarded ₹414.01 crore of financial incentive for its coal gasification project at Bhadravati with a total investment of ₹2,763 crore.

Mistaken identity sparks attack: Bank executive assaulted, bitten by dog during recovery visit

Hyderabad: What began as a routine debt collection turned into chaos on Thursday when a bank executive was assaulted—not just by a man he mistook for a customer, but also by the man's Rottweiler, which sank its teeth into his leg during the confrontation. The incident occurred around 4.30 pm in Jawahar Nagar under the Madhura Nagar police station limits, leaving K Satyanarayana, 39, an RBL bank executive, injured and shaken. According to police, Satyanarayana was on duty trying to locate one B Nandivardhan Rao, a customer with a pending 2 lakh credit card bill. Unable to pinpoint the address, he began asking around in the neighbourhood. A tenant pointed him towards a man named 'Nandu' who lived on the building's first floor, unaware that Nandu was actually Sekhar, and not Nandivardhan. Trusting the lead, Satyanarayana climbed the stairs and was informed by a relative that the person was not home. As Satyanarayana descended and prepared to leave, Sekhar confronted him on the ground floor, irate over the insinuation that he was a defaulter. According to police, Sekhar learned from his family members that a bank executive had come by, inquiring about him and claiming he had a pending credit card bill. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Plastic Surgeon Reveals The 1 Thing Every Woman Should Be Using Instead Of Moisturiser New Skin Discovery Undo "Angered by what he saw as a baseless accusation, Sekhar confronted the bank executive," said sub-inspector SNG Avinash Babu. Despite the banker identifying himself and explaining the confusion, things spiralled fast. "He slapped me twice, smashed my phone, and then pushed his dog towards me. The Rottweiler lunged and bit my left leg," Satyanarayana said in his complaint to police. Bruised and bitten, Satyanarayana rushed to a nearby private hospital and called his manager and colleagues for backup. After treatment, they went straight to Madhura Nagar police station and lodged a complaint. Police booked Sekhar under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including 115(2)–voluntarily causing hurt, 126(1)–wrongful restraint, 324(2)–mischief and 291–negligent conduct with respect to an animal. "This was a case of mistaken identity. The bank executive was looking for someone else but approached Sekhar by mistake," said Avinash Babu. "The dog was not on a leash. Sekhar admitted the pet followed him downstairs and bit the man during the heated exchange. The dog was vaccinated," the SI said. Police issued Sekhar a notice under section 35(3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, recorded his statement, and released him.

K-P launches integrated IT portal

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa has achieved a significant milestone with the launch of an Integrated IT Portal for public sector entities, aimed at ensuring strict financial discipline, transparency in the utilization of public funds, and improved public service delivery. Developed with technical support from the FCDO-funded Sub-National Governance (SNG) Programme, the Integrated IT Portal is set to revolutionize financial oversight and governance across 181 public sector entities (PSEs) in K-P. This centralized platform features real-time financial and operational Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), interactive dashboards, and automated reporting mechanisms. It empowers the Corporate Governance Unit (CGU) of the Finance Department to monitor, manage, and enforce fiscal discipline effectively. The formal launch of the portal took place in Peshawar, with Chief Minister Ali Amin Khan Gandapur as the chief guest. The event was attended by Advisor to the Chief Minister on Finance, Muzammil Aslam, senior government officials, and representatives from partner organizations. Currently, the K-P government oversees 183 public sector entities, including autonomous and semi-autonomous bodies, universities, teaching hospitals, municipal service delivery units, and other public organizations. This new portal enhances financial oversight and operational efficiency across these entities, making K-P the first province in Pakistan to implement such a system. With its launch, the use of the IT portal is now mandatory for all public sector entities in the province. The system offers advanced financial performance indicators, interactive dashboards, and an automated reporting mechanism to facilitate better decision-making, monitoring, and governance. During the event, the first-ever Service Delivery Performance Monitoring Report was also presented. Initially piloted in three departments, the report has now been extended to all government departments and subordinate entities.
