Beyoncé and Jay-Z to Compete Against Each Other for an Emmy This Year

Beyoncé is facing some particularly familiar competition for an Emmy this year: her own husband. As the 2025 Emmy nominations were announced on Tuesday, both Queen Bey and Jay-Z (real name Shawn Carter) were listed as nominees in the outstanding variety special (live) category; Beyoncé for her Beyoncé Bowl halftime show for the NFL's Christmas Day game on Netflix, and Jay as one of the executive producers for Kendrick Lamar's Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show. More from The Hollywood Reporter Emmy Noms Analysis: Reading Between the Lines of Tuesday's Announcement 'Severance' Dominated in Emmys Nominations - But for the Wrong Season Emmys Nominations Snubs: 'Squid Game' Shut Out, 'Handmaid's Tale' Only Lands One Nod - Uzo Aduba Surprises It's hard to track how many times a husband and wife have ever competed against one another in the same Emmy category in the past, though it's certainly not a common occurrence. Both Beyoncé and Lamar's halftime shows were critically lauded and groundbreaking. Beyoncé performed the first-ever Christmas Day NFL halftime show, while Lamar broke records for the most-viewed Super Bowl halftime show of all time with over 133 million viewers. SNL50: The Homecoming Concert rounds out the music-related programming nominated in this year's variety special (live) category, and the three will be up against the Oscars as well as fellow Saturday Night Live special SNL50: The Anniversary Special. Aside from the variety special itself, Beyoncé was also nominated for outstanding directing for a variety special for the concert alongside co-director Alex Rudzinski. It's the third time she's been nominated in that category, having previously gotten nods for Lemonade back in 2016, and for Homecoming: A Film by Beyonce in 2019. Both Beyoncé and Lamar's halftime shows were also recognized in outstanding the choreography for variety or reality programming category, with Charm La'Donna getting nominated for both shows. Tyrik Patterson, Christopher Grant and Parris Goebel were nominated for the Beyonce Bowl's choreography as well. Lamar himself was also nominated for outstanding music direction for the halftime show, alongside fellow music director Tony Russell, and Questlove was tapped for musical direction for the SNL anniversary concert alongside James Poyser. Questlove was also nominated for outstanding directing for a documentary/nonfiction program with Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years Of SNL Music, as well as for outstanding documentary or nonfiction special for Sly Lives! (Aka The Burden of Black Genius). Within the Emmy's seven music-specific categories themselves, other big-name nominees included Hans Zimmer for his score on The Americas, Adam Sandler with Dan Bulla for the music and lyrics to 'Adam Sandler's Song: 50 Years' on SNL50: The Anniversary Special, and Kristen Wiig, Sean Douglas and Josh Greenbaum for the music and lyrics on 'Harper and Will Go West' from Will & Harper. Danny Devito gives rare update on close friend Jack Nicholson's welfare

Danny DeVito has shared details of his friend Jack Nicholson's recent welfare as the 88-year-old has rarely been seen in public over the last decade. Once known for his frequent appearances courtside at Laker's games, Nicholson is now rarely seen out and about, with the recent exception of his cameo during the live broadcast of SNL50: The Anniversary Special in February. DeVito, 80, has been close friends with Nicholson since the pair first worked together on One Flew Over the Cuckoo Nest 50 years ago. 'I just saw Jack a couple weeks ago — it was his birthday a month ago, and he's great,' DeVito told People Magazine in a recent interview. Nicholson and the Always Sunny in Philadelphia star bonded on the set of the iconic film, with DeVito going on to star in the Nicholson-directed 1978 comedy Goin' South three years later. They also both appeared in James L. Brooks' seriocomic, 1983 Best Picture winner Terms of Endearment, the 1992 biopic Hoffa directed by DeVito, and the 1996 Tim Burton comedy Mars Attacks!. 'We were in the presence of this guy who's really at his moment,' DeVito says, reflecting on meeting Nicholson during production of the now-classic 1975 drama. By then, Nicholson had already built a formidable résumé with Easy Rider, Carnal Knowledge, The Last Detail, and Chinatown. Cuckoo's Nest would cement his status, earning him his first Academy Award for Best Actor and launching a career that would tally 12 nominations and three wins. Despite that, DeVito says Nicholson remained deeply grounded. 'He started out exactly the way everybody else did, where he couldn't get a job,' DeVito recalls. 'It was like he came to Hollywood and he was going to just write and direct, and then Easy Rider comes along after the Corman stuff… So he was in our milieu, and he was always just as open and genuine, and we all felt it immediately.' Nicholson was last seen on Saturday Night Live's 50th birthday special, with the show pulling stars that included Steve Martin and Sir Paul McCartney as well as Nicholson. The 87-year-old has rarely been seen in public in the 15 years since his last film, How Do You Know, released in 2010. Got a story? Create Account U.S. District Court Judge Lewis Liman's decision is the latest development in the bitter legal battle surrounding the dark romantic drama that includes Lively suing Baldoni in late December. Baldoni and production company Wayfarer Studios countersued in January for $400 million, accusing Lively and her husband, 'Deadpool' actor Ryan Reynolds, of defamation and extortion. The judge ruled that Baldoni can't sue Lively for defamation over claims she made in her lawsuit, because allegations made in a lawsuit are exempt from libel claims. Liman also ruled that Baldoni's claims that Lively stole creative control of the film didn't count as extortion under California law. While Lively was accused in the lawsuit of threatening to refuse to promote the film, Wayfarer does 'not allege facts showing that Lively had an obligation to promote the film or to approve marketing materials,' Liman wrote. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Baldoni's legal team can revise the lawsuit if they want to pursue different claims related to whether Lively breached a contract, the judge said. 'It Ends With Us,' an adaptation of Colleen Hoover's bestselling 2016 novel that begins as a romance but takes a dark turn into domestic violence, was released in August, exceeding box office expectations with a $50 million debut. But the movie's release was shrouded by speculation over discord between Lively and Baldoni. The judge also dismissed Baldoni's defamation lawsuit against The New York Times, which had reported on Lively's sexual harassment allegations. 'Today's opinion is a total victory and a complete vindication for Blake Lively, along with those that Justin Baldoni and the Wayfarer Parties dragged into their retaliatory lawsuit, including Ryan Reynolds, (publicist) Leslie Sloane and The New York Times,' Lively's attorneys, Esra Hudson and Mike Gottlieb, said in a prepared statement. The lawyers said they 'look forward to the next round' of seeking attorneys' fees, treble damages and punitive damages. The Associated Press sent emails seeking comment to Baldoni's attorneys. Lively appeared in the 2005 film 'The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants' and the TV series 'Gossip Girl' from 2007 to 2012 before starring in films including 'The Town' and 'The Shallows.' Baldoni starred in the TV comedy 'Jane the Virgin,' directed the 2019 film 'Five Feet Apart' and wrote 'Man Enough,' a book challenging traditional notions of masculinity. ‘Does anyone have a blanket?': Dakota Johnson's dress steals the spotlight on ‘The Tonight Show'

Dakota Johnson found herself the center of unexpected attention on 'The Tonight Show' — not for her new film 'Materialists,' but for the plunging neckline of her outfit. From the moment the actress took her seat opposite host Jimmy Fallon on Monday, June 2, she appeared uneasy. Glancing at the in-studio monitors and seeing her short, low-cut black dress, Johnson had a sudden realization. 'Oh God,' the '50 Shades of Grey' star said. 'This is the wrong outfit.' 'No, no. I think it's perfect, you look great,' Fallon replied. 'Just don't move.' But the actress wasn't convinced, later asking, 'Does anyone have, like, a blanket I could wear?' 'My eyes are up here,' Johnson teased during one especially awkward moment, prompting Fallon to look skyward. 'I don't even know what to do,' the host said. 'I'm confused.' Fallon gamely offered a tissue, which Johnson promptly stuffed into the neckline. 'That's perfect,' she joked. 'No one will even know the difference!' After giving the tissue back to Fallon, he quipped that he'd sell the tissue on eBay. 'You won't believe where this tissue's (been)! TMZ!' he said. Despite the distraction, the pair did manage to touch on 'Materialists' and shared stories from February's ' SNL50: The Anniversary Special.' Johnson, who spent part of her childhood in San Francisco and Monterey, recalled watching the event from under the bleachers with Lorne Michaels and a brief backstage interaction with Meryl Streep, who kissed her hand. But talk soon turned back to the dress. 'Tell me if there's a problem,' Johnson told Fallon. 'There's almost a problem, but not quite,' star of the NBC late-night talk show said. 'Everything is going according to plan.' She wore it briefly before regaining her composure and carrying on. This isn't Johnson's first brush with live-TV wardrobe hiccups. Last year, she held up her dress for the entirety of a 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' interview after a strap broke mid-show.
