Schools Across Morocco Urged to Continue Classes After Eid Al Adha Holidays

Rabat – Teachers, parents, and students across Morocco have received instructions from regional education authorities to continue classes after the Eid Al Adha holidays. These directives were sent by the Regional Academies of Education and Training, following the national schedule set by the Ministry of National Education, Preschool, and Sports, SNRT News reported. The academy of the Casablanca-Settat region issued a statement urging parents and guardians to ensure that students return to school and continue attending classes regularly until the end of the school year, as outlined by the Ministry. The academy explained that this decision supports the goals of the 2022-2026 Roadmap for Education Reform, especially the action plans for 2024 and 2025, which aim to build a quality school system for all. Classes will continue according to the updated school calendar for 2024-2025. The official memo said that students must attend school until all lessons are completed. Any unjustified absence before the official end of classes will be considered a violation of school rules. The academy also called on teachers, parents, and all education partners to stay engaged and help make this final phase of the school year successful for students. Continuous assessment tests in primary schools will take place from June 9 to 14, while the national exam for sixth-grade students is scheduled for June 23 and 24. Middle school students are set to take exams between June 9 and 14, with the regional exam for ninth-grade students set for June 17 and 18. Classes for middle school students will continue until June 28. First-year and second-year high school student will take their continuous assessment exams from June 16 to 21, with classes also running through to June 28. Tags: EducationEid Al AdhaMoroccoSchools

Poultry Prices Go Up Ahead of Eid Al Adha

Rabat – Moroccan markets have witnessed a notable increase in poultry produce just days ahead of Eid Al Adha, which will take place on June 7 in Morocco. Moroccan state-owned news provider SNRTNews reported today that prices of poultry in Casablanca markets reached MAD 23 per kilogram compared to MAD 17. Experts suggest that the notable change is due to the cancellation of the Eid al-Adha sacrifice ritual, which prompted a significant demand for poultry. In February, King Mohammed VI announced the cancellation of the sacrifice ritual, citing socio-economic challenges including drought. The climate challenges affected the livestock population, which saw a remarkable decrease. In response, the King stressed that the feast celebration could be enjoyed through performing Eid prayers and enjoying its spiritual significance, in addition to family visits and the atmosphere. Moroccans have in recent weeks taken to social media to comment on the high demand for meat products ahead of Eid Al Adha. This came as many Muslims are expected to enjoy the feast's culinary delicacies despite the absence of the sacrifice ritual. Some, however, have turned to buying fish and poultry products, as they fear that shops will be closed for weeks. Butchers traditionally close for several weeks during Eid Al Adha, knowing that most families have already secured more than enough meat through the sacrifice of goats or sheep. Butchers and markets selling poultry products have urged citizens to stock up on poultry provisions, warning against a similar scenario. Mohamed Aboud, president of the National Association of chicken farmers, told SNRTnews that the cancellation of the sacrifice ritual led many citizens to turn more heavily to poultry meat. He stressed that during Eid al-Adha, markets see a drop in demand for poultry initially. There is an exception this year, however, he said, noting that retail chicken prices now range between MAD 21 and 23 instead of their initial prices set at MAD 17. Mustapha Mountassir, president of the National Association of Poultry Meat Producers, echoed the same statement to the same source, noting that the price rise is due to demand outpacing supply. Hot Weather Expected to Continue Across Morocco This Week

Rabat – Morocco is expected to face continued hot weather this week as an early heatwave pushes temperatures well above normal for this time of year. The heat began in the last week of May and is affecting several regions across the country. According to El Houssein Youaabed, head of communication and partnership at the General Directorate of Meteorology, the hot weather is expected to continue for the next three days in the eastern regions, the southeast, and the inland parts of the southern provinces. However, northern and western areas are expected to see a drop in temperatures, with a return to normal seasonal levels, he told SNRT News. Youaabed attributed the ongoing heat to the continued effect of a thermal low-pressure system in the south and southeast of the country. This system is pushing temperatures higher in those regions. Meanwhile, coastal areas remain under the influence of a high-pressure system that brings cooler sea breezes, helping to ease the heat. In the coming days, the highest temperatures are expected to range between 36 and 42 degrees Celsius in the far southeast and parts of the eastern and southern desert provinces. Temperatures are expected to range between 29 and 35 degrees in the plains west of the Atlas Mountains, the southeastern slopes, and the eastern region. Coastal areas and other parts of the country will see milder temperatures, ranging from 23 to 29 degrees. Mountain areas, especially the Middle and High Atlas, along with the high eastern plateaus, are expected to see unstable weather with local rain showers. In addition, low and thick clouds are likely to form at night and in the morning, especially over the northern and central plains, the Mediterranean coast, and the northwest of the southern provinces. The hot conditions will also be accompanied by strong local winds, especially in the eastern regions, central coast, and desert provinces. These winds may cause dust storms in some areas. Starting Thursday, the hot to very hot weather is expected to continue across the inland plains, eastern areas, southeast, inland Souss region, and the southern provinces, with temperatures rising gradually until the weekend. Myanmar Case: Casablanca Court Tries Four Moroccans for Human Trafficking

Rabat – The Criminal Court in Casablanca has opened the case of four young Moroccan men who returned from what they described as the 'hell' of Myanmar. These men had been held by online scam companies near the Myanmar-Thailand border and are now facing serious charges related to human trafficking and kidnapping. The four individuals, originally from the city of Marrakech, are currently in detention at the Ain Sebaa local prison in Casablanca. They had returned to Morocco after escaping from camps run by criminal groups. These groups were involved in digital fraud and cybercrime, and had lured young people with fake job offers promising high salaries. According to lawyer Yassine Moujan, who represents one of the accused, the investigative phase ended last week after months of examining complaints and testimonies, SNRT News reported. One of the men was initially released under judicial supervision but has since been arrested and added to the case. The court is expected to announce the date for the first public hearings soon. The young men are being prosecuted for allegedly participating in human trafficking, kidnapping, and illegal detention. Interestingly, the complaints were filed not only by the victims and their families, but also by the accused themselves, each party blaming the other for their involvement in the scam and for paying ransom money to secure release from the camps. Back in late 2024, Morocco's Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that 34 Moroccan nationals were freed from captivity in Southeast Asia. These individuals had been trapped by criminal networks operating in countries like Myanmar, Laos, and Cambodia. The ministry revealed that they had been detained in regions controlled by armed ethnic groups, outside the control of Myanmar's central government. Many were subjected to forced labor, exploitation, and, in some cases, torture. Tags: human traffickingkidnapMyanmar

Ben Ahmed Mosque Murder: Victim's Flesh Served as Street Food, Police Confirm

Rabat – Authorities in the Moroccan city of Ben Ahmed have uncovered disturbing new findings in the investigation of a gruesome crime that has shocked the country. Human remains were discovered in the toilets of the city's Grand Mosque on Sunday, and police now confirm that some of the victim's flesh was unknowingly served to the public by a local food vendor. A security source told SNRT News that the victim was a man in his 50s who lived in the area and worked at a glasses shop. He had been missing for two days before his family reported his disappearance. The main suspect was found inside the mosque's restrooms in a highly disturbed state, loudly reciting Quranic verses and refusing to respond to police. The man, now in custody, reportedly has a history of mental illness and had received treatment at a psychiatric hospital. He had recently been entrusted with caring for the mosque, as he appeared to be in stable condition. Investigators later discovered that the suspect had given pieces of meat to a popular grilled food vendor in the neighborhood. Tests revealed that the meat was in fact human flesh. Additional remains, including bones and internal organs, were found in other locations and confirmed to belong to the same victim. The General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) said in a statement that forensic and scientific police teams searched the mosque and found body parts wrapped in plastic bags, as well as several knives and sharp tools. The suspect's clothes were stained with blood, and he was behaving violently when arrested, SNRT News reported. Police also found 'suspicious' personal belongings in his home, which are now being examined for a possible connection to the victim. The murder has shocked and disgusted locals and Moroccans across the country, especially that it took place in a mosque, a sacred place of worship and peace.
