Expedite Nalgonda X Road-Owaisi Jn flyover construction, GHMC chief directs officials

Hyderabad: In a determined push to strengthen Hyderabad's urban infrastructure, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Commissioner RV Karnan on Tuesday conducted a comprehensive inspection of the 2.58 km four-lane bi-directional flyover from Nalgonda X Road to Owaisi Junction. The Commissioner directed officials to expedite construction and resolve land acquisition hurdles to meet the targeted completion date of March 2026. He was accompanied by Malakpet MLA Ahmed Bin Abdullah Balala, and Charminar ZC Venkanna. This vital corridor, part of the Strategic Road Development Programme (SRDP), is designed to ease traffic congestion along one of the city's busiest stretches. Spanning from the Government Printing Press in Chanchalguda to Yadagiri Theatre via Saidabad and IS Sadan, the Rs 620 crore project aims to create a seamless, conflict-free traffic flow. During the inspection, Commissioner Karnan emphasized the importance of maintaining both speed and quality in execution. Project engineers reaffirmed their commitment to delivering the flyover by the March 2026 deadline. Addressing delays due to pending land acquisition, the Commissioner instructed town planning officials to resolve these issues immediately to prevent further setbacks. Malakpet DC MK I Ali, Maintenance Executive Engineer Peersing and Project Executive Engineer Bhupal, who were present during the visit, assured full cooperation and adherence to timelines. Subsequently, the Commissioner inspected the drainage facilities in the Dabirpura area. He pointed out that during the rainy season, rainwater should flow unimpeded through the Nala's, drains and not result in floods that affect residents living nearby. On the occasion, Commissioner Karnan stated, 'The Nalgonda X Road to Owaisi Junction flyover is pivotal for easing traffic congestion and enhancing connectivity. We are working diligently to overcome challenges and deliver this world-class infrastructure by March 2026.' This series of inspections underscores GHMC's commitment to accelerating infrastructure development and improving urban mobility across Hyderabad.

India expands Southeast Asia defence footprint with new joint venture in Philippines

According to a joint statement issued Monday, the proposed JVC will be headquartered in the Philippines and will manufacture, assemble and distribute SMPP's defence products tailored to support the Philippines government's Self-Reliant Defence Posture (SRDP) initiative. Under the agreement, SMPP will supply its proven, 'Made-in-India' technology along with manufacturing and quality assurance systems, while ADFC will manage local operations, from recruitment to skill development, with an aim to eventually establish a Filipino-led manufacturing and research capability. The agreement was finalised during Philippines' President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr's first state visit to India earlier this month, which marked the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. New Delhi: Delhi-based defence equipment manufacturer SMPP Limited and the Philippines' Asia Defence and Firepower Corporation (ADFC) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish a strategic joint venture corporation (JVC) in the Philippines. SMPP, which produces ammunition components, bulletproof jackets, ballistic helmets and armour kits for vehicles and aircraft, has been a supplier to the Indian armed forces for over a decade. Last month, the company announced an order worth more than Rs 300 crore under emergency provisions, covering the supply of 27,700 bulletproof jackets and 11,700 advanced ballistic helmets to the Indian Army. Meanwhile, ADFC operates primarily as a Filipino defence integrator and developer, partnering with international manufacturers to localise production and build domestic manufacturing capability. 'This joint venture represents the best of Indian defence innovation meeting the needs of a friendly partner nation,' said SMPP CEO Ashish Kansal. 'By sharing our proven technology and know-how, we're enabling the Philippines to build a resilient, self-reliant defence ecosystem.' The JVC will be majority-owned—at least 60 percent—by Filipino stakeholders, in accordance with local ownership regulations, the statement said. This arrangement, it added, ensures compliance with Philippine law and also makes the venture eligible for substantial benefits under the country's Corporate Recovery and Tax Incentives for Enterprises (CREATE) Act. These incentives include multi-year tax holidays, duty-free import of capital equipment and expedited government approvals. The statement further noted that, by qualifying as a locally incorporated defence manufacturer, the JVC can take advantage of provisions that allow the Department of National Defence to award contracts directly, without the need for public bidding, to meet urgent or strategic requirements. During Marcos's visit, the two countries announced a strategic partnership with defence collaboration at its core and voiced concerns over 'coercive and aggressive actions' in the South China Sea. Manila is also the first to procure the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system from India, signing a $375 million contract in January 2022 for three shore-based batteries. The deal included training for operators and an integrated logistics support package, with the first battery delivered in April 2024 and the second in April 2025. The joint venture also aligns with the government's push to expand India's defence manufacturing footprint into Southeast Asia. AFP: 23 Chinese ships monitored in WPS amid bad weather

File photo of a China Coast Guard vessel patrolling the waters as the sun sets in the West Philippine Sea. JUN VENERACION/GMA Int The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) said that 23 Chinese vessels were monitored in key areas of the West Philippine Sea (WPS) last week amid the bad weather. Rear Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad, AFP spokesperson for the WPS, said a total of seven Chinese Coast Guard (CCG) and seven People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy ships were sighted in Bajo de Masinloc between July 21 and 27. Additional deployments included four CCG and two PLA Navy vessels in Ayungin Shoal, one PLA Navy ship in Sabina Shoal, and one CCG and one PLA Navy ship near Pag-asa Island. No aggressive acts by Chinese forces were recorded during the latest monitoring period, according to Trinidad. However, he stressed that the continued presence of foreign ships within the country's exclusive economic zone (EEZ) remains a "concern." 'We will keep performing our mandate of securing our national territory and protecting our sovereignty and sovereign rights,' said Trinidad. 'The Department of National Defense has been very clear—we will be resistant and unwavering against the aggressive actions of the Chinese Communist Party. Your Armed Forces are prepared to sacrifice, pay even the ultimate sacrifice in furtherance of this mandate.' 'Steadfast' AFP officials said that under the Marcos administration, the defense sector has intensified both domestic preparedness and regional engagement with allies. 'From 2022 onwards, we have seen an escalation in our defense diplomacy,' Trinidad said, citing new agreements such as the Reciprocal Access Agreement with Japan and a Visiting Forces Agreement with New Zealand. 'More than statements of support, we have seen ships, aircraft and troops from like-minded countries performing activities with your Armed Forces on land, sea, and air.' AFP spokesperson Col. Francel Margareth Padilla also reiterated the military's alignment with the administration's modernization and self-reliant defense agenda. 'Whether it's securing our democracy, defending our sovereignty, or saving lives—we remain your steadfast guardians,' she said. Padilla added that the AFP is supportive of the U.S. government's recent plans to establish ammunition production in the region, seeing it as a potential complement to the country's Self-Reliant Defense Posture (SRDP). 'This is also part of our alliance-building with other nations. We welcome this initiative and will support it in whatever way the DND deems appropriate,' she said. Looking beyond the West Philippine Sea, Trinidad said the AFP has expanded its defense focus across the archipelago, including the southern borders, eastern seaboard, and northernmost islands such as Batanes and Babuyan. 'We are no longer just looking west. We are securing the entire archipelago—from internal to external defense,' he said. —VAL, GMA Integrated News
