Sharjah plans to convert single-lane roads to dual carriageways to ease traffic flow
A comprehensive plan aimed at improving the emirate's road infrastructure is being implemented, Eng. Yousef Khamis Al Othmani, Chairman of Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA), revealed. According to the plan, a number of single-lane roads would be converted into dual carriageways and connected directly to main roads, thereby enhancing traffic flow and meeting the growing needs of the population, he said. SRTA is continuously working to implement vital projects in all areas of the emirate and the latest project completed was the development of Abu Amr Al Basri Street in the Al Rahmaniya suburb, in front of the Rahmaniya Mall, Al Othmani said during a conversation with the Direct Line programme. The street was converted from a single-lane road to a dual road with two lanes in each direction and was directly connected to the Emirates Road, thereby contributing to significantly facilitating traffic flow in the area, he added. The conversion plan would cover a number of roads in various areas including the road linking Al Shaghrafa and Kshisha areas, the implementation of which is scheduled to begin before the end of this year, he said. These projects are proceeding in accordance with the directives of His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, who places great importance on developing infrastructure in densely populated areas, he added. Al Othmani emphasized that these efforts are part of the SRTA's commitment to enhancing the comfort of road users and achieving the highest standards of safety and well-being for all members of society. SRTA is adopting a fixed work plan that includes the regular opening of new lanes to meet the needs of residents and improve quality of life, he said.

SRTA launches ‘On-Demand Buses' service in Sharjah
Flexible, direct mobility solution This innovative service offers passengers a flexible and direct mode of transport from their homes to their daily destinations, particularly in areas not fully served by the current public bus network. It promotes the concept of an integrated transport system across the emirate. Engineer Yousef Khamis Al Othmani, chairman of the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA), emphasised the need for a flexible, sustainable public transport system in light of Sharjah's rapid urban and population expansion. The On-Demand Buses service reflects SRTA's vision for reducing private vehicle use, thereby lowering congestion and carbon emissions. Enhancing quality of life through smart transport Al Othmani added that public transport is central to improving quality of life and mobility within the emirate. SRTA continues to invest in modern transport technologies and expand smart services for all while committing to a safe and sustainable transport environment that aligns with Sharjah's strategic vision for a more balanced and prosperous urban future. Affordable, smart and user-friendly The first phase includes two buses operating daily from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm, with a nominal fare of AED 8 per trip. Children under five travel for free. Users can request and track buses in real time via a smart app, which also allows for cashless payments and instant quality feedback. The system enables users to set their pick-up and drop-off points without being restricted to fixed bus stops or schedules, offering flexibility tailored to residents' and visitors' needs. The service facilitates convenient travel from residential areas to daily destinations, including commercial centres, restaurants, service facilities, and workplaces—reducing dependence on private cars and improving overall accessibility. Smart features Abdulaziz Al Jarwan, Director of Transport Affairs at SRTA, stated that buses are equipped with internal surveillance cameras to ensure a safe travel environment. Linked to AI systems, the buses collect real-time data on passenger numbers, demographics, and usage patterns, enabling data-driven decision-making for improved operations and future planning. The buses are also equipped to accommodate people of determination, with features that ensure easy boarding and movement. The launch coincided with the Eid Al-Adha holidays—an ideal time due to increased travel activity. The initiative is part of SRTA's long-term strategy for a scalable, smart, and sustainable transport network. The first phase will be evaluated to guide potential expansion to other areas in the future, in line with SRTA's mission to improve quality of life and ensure accessible mobility for all.

Thai railway unveils land development programme
The move is set to significantly increase the railway's revenue streams through its asset-management subsidiary. — AFP BANGKOK: The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has announced an extensive plan to unlock the commercial value of its vast land holdings, with 28 prime plots slated for auction over the next two years. The move is set to significantly increase the railway's revenue streams through its asset-management subsidiary. Currently, the SRT controls approximately around 39,500ha of land across Thailand. Of this, 32,299ha are designated for core business operations such as stations and railway lines, while 7202ha fall under 'non-core' assets, with 5,402ha identified as having substantial commercial development potential. In September 2020, the Thai Cabinet approved the establishment of SRT Asset Co Ltd (SRTA), a wholly owned subsidiary, to manage these assets more efficiently. SRTA was officially registered in April 2021 and has since taken over the administration of existing commercial lease agreements. Veeris Ammarapala, governor of the SRT, clarified that while the SRT retains 100% ownership of all assets, SRTA's mandate is to significantly enhance revenue generation from them. SRTA will manage current leases, allocate new land, negotiate with third parties, and forge joint ventures with private entities for land development. This includes leasing land from the SRT or acquiring plots from other organisations for development and management. SRTA will ultimately return 5% of its contract management income to SRT. 'SRT has entrusted SRTA with the management and detailed study of development models for all major land plots, including the lease agreement for the Phahonyothin area, where Central Group is a key tenant and whose contract expires in 2028,' Veeris stated. 'While Central Group has expressed initial interest in renewing their lease, SRT must first update the land valuation before commencing negotiations.' Since last November, SRTA has taken over the management of 12,233 commercial (non-core) lease agreements from the SRT, covering 6,155ha. A thorough review of these contracts is now underway. — The Nation/ANN
