Another showstopper by Patlansky
When you know your blues and have seen a Dan Patlansky show or two, you may have certain expectations of a full band show. There is acoustic blues and electric blues, and on both of these counts, this man is a master. His previous show was a smooth dance between haunting and rollicking songs. But this one: the full band tour finale at Menlyn Barnyard this past weekend, took the tunes (and riffs, and lyrics, and solos) to new heights. And by his own admission, he is a Stevie Ray Vaughn follower, but he seems to have made some of SRV's DNA his own – with his original tribute Red Velvet Suit, which, fittingly, kicked the show off in top gear. Patlansky refers to Philip Sayce's style as 'a relentless barrage of soul and power'. This actually describes his own musical style, from my perspective. Even the ballads that sweep more than they tug are simultaneously soulful and powerful. As Rekord's Elize Parker remarked at the time of the launch of his latest album Movin' On last year, his versatility lies in how smoothly he can move from one mood to the next. And that he did in his inimitable style during this full band show. Band members bass player Greg van Kerkhof and drummer Andy Maritz are in their own right of international standard, like Patlansky. And their seamless interaction made the evening a rip (or should I say riff) roaring rollercoaster of top-notch music. Their riveting playing at times almost lifted the roof, only to be taken down again by the likes of 'Movin' On'… a soulful song that tells how Patlansky's father always pointed to the truth of just moving on, even though times can be tough. Watch a video where Patlansky performs 'Movin' On': 'Who I am' is a touching song described by a friend as 'I can feel my car wheels under me when I hear it'. Watch: During the show, some songs from his Influencer set also charmed the audience, who were hanging on the music every note of the way. Although Patlansky did not do a full-on behind-the-head guitar trick a-la-Jimmy Hendricks, those who were paying attention saw him playing a full song with only one hand. That's the thing with blues guitarists. They will never stop pushing the boundaries and experimenting with drawing sound from their guitars, making their audience gasp in awe. Patlansky remains Pretoria's top international blues artist. His album Movin' On, launched last year, was voted into the number three spot in the annual Blues Rock Review top 20 albums. In this, he pipped blues greats like Philip Sayce in 14th spot and Marc Broussard in 17th place to the post. Do you have more information about the story? Kasturirangan gave SRV a science and technology boost
KOCHI: In the passing of eminent , the SRV High School in Kochi has lost an illustrious alumni. The school held a special place in his heart and he had always been in touch with the Old Students' Association (OSA) office-bearers to enquire about the activities happening there. 'Right from the launch of OSA in 2003, Kasturirangan had been actively associated with the efforts to improve his alma mater,' former SRV OSA president and Krishna Hospital director Dr A K Sabapathy tells TNIE. Kasturirangan joined SRV in Class 3, in 1947, he recalls. 'He did Classes 1 and 2 at a school in Tripunithura. He studied up to Class 5 in SRV and left for Bombay (now Mumbai) in 1950. I was in Class 9 then.' The former Isro chief had always said the schooling he had at SRV during his formative years played a great role in moulding his life, Dr Sabapathy says. For good measure, Kasturirangan decided to show his gratitude by setting up a Science and Technology Museum at the school. 'He got Rs 1 crore sanctioned from the MP fund (he was a Rajya Sabha member from 2003-09) and set up the museum to ensure that the students passing out from SRV would have developed a scientific temper. The museum was inaugurated in 2006 by the then President A P J Abdul Kalam,' Dr Sabapathy says. In an interview with TNIE during the 175th anniversary of the school, Kasturirangan had fondly remembered his SRV years as the most eventful. 'In our class, a few tables were kept apart for the members of the Cochin royal family. These boys used to come in a limousine and enter the class just a minute before the lessons. This was to keep a level of separation between the children of the royal family and the commoners,' Kasturirangan had reminisced. He had also mentioned a meeting with the Cochin Maharaja at a function during his stint as the chairman of ISRO. 'He too was a student around the time I was at SRV. We exchanged some very pleasant experiences of sharing the same class between royalty and commoners,' the space scientist had said. While he took a keen interest in the school's activities, he could not visit the institution often as he spent much of his time in Bengaluru, Dr Sabapathy points out. 'But SRV, which has produced many illustrious personalities over the years, held a very high place in his heart. We mourn his loss which has left a big void,' he said.

SRV signs contract to build 50 residential units in Espoo, Finland
SRV, a Finnish developer, and Asuntosäätiö, a residential property owner, have signed a €10m ($10.8m) contract to construct 50 residential units in the Mårtensbro area of Espoo, Finland. Mårtensbro, situated centrally in Espoonlahti opposite Lippulaiva, is poised for development, with SRV holding a planning reservation for numerous blocks in the vicinity. The proposed eight-storey apartment building will comprise a total of 50 right-of-occupancy units, with half of these designed as larger family homes. The project emphasises adaptability, offering the possibility to combine residential units and business premises in the future. Construction work is scheduled to commence in early 2025, with an estimated completion date in late 2026. This fixed-price contract will be included in SRV's order backlog for the first quarter of 2025. SRV Helsinki metropolitan area senior vice-president for housing Jorma Seppä said: 'We have been developing the area in collaboration with the city for a long time, and now, with the contract with Asuntosäätiö, we can start construction work on the first project in the area. 'Almost 500 apartments will be built in the first block of the area. SRV is currently also planning developer-contracted housing projects in the area, and the block will be built with private financing for owner-occupied and rental apartments.' Asuntosäätiö development director Turkka Keravuori said: "It is great to be able to participate in the development of a new residential area in Espoo. A complex of several blocks has been planned for the area, and [the] right-of-occupancy building of Asuntosäätiö will be the first new development in Mårtensbro. "The project excellently supports our goal of building affordable and comfortable housing with good transport connections." Last month, SRV confirmed a construction contract for the Nissniku House, a multipurpose building in Kirkkonummi, Finland. Military personnel test submarine rescue system in Glasgow
More than 100 military personnel spanning three nations were in Glasgow to test a new Nato submarine system. From March 4-6, a three day mass evacuation exercise, known as MASSEVEX, took place, involving personnel from the UK, France and Norway. Observers from the US and Sweden were also in attendance. It was held at the Nato Submarine Rescue System's base at the Westway industrial site, near Glasgow Airport. Sailors, medics and divers from the three nations practised a number of procedures that can help evacuate stricken submariners from a disabled vessel on the seabed. Commander Chris Baldwin RN, rescue element commander and operations officer for the NSRS, said: 'It is vitally important to bring the tri-national team together to conduct a dedicated period of capability training so that our submariners and their families can have confidence that if called upon, their colleagues in the NSRS are ready to come to their aid. 'We have completed a very successful period of 'mission rehearsal' to ensure that the NSRS trained personnel from France, Norway, and the UK can operate effectively together in conducting submarine rescue operations. 'The completion of this MASSEVEX helps to keep the NSRS team ready to respond to any submarine emergency globally.' The NSRS is in three parts, the first of which is an Intervention Remotely Operated Vehicle (IROV). The system can be remotely operated and delivers food, water and medical supplies to stricken submariners. The second part, a Submarine Rescue Vehicle (SRV), dubbed 'Nemo', is capable of diving up to 610 metres and docking with a submarine's escape hatch. It can take up to 15 passengers at any one time back to the surface. The final piece, the decompression chamber, is a portable chamber complex that enables the safe decompression of crew members under expert supervision while Nemo performs further recovery duties. Commander Nick Samuels RN, Coordinator Rescue Forces (CRF) during the MASSEVEX, said: 'The NSRS is one of the leading submarine rescue capabilities in the world and is held at immediate readiness to respond to a submarine emergency. 'Activated by the Royal Navy's Maritime Operations Centre in Northwood, NSRS will be a prime asset for the Coordinator Rescue Forces (CRF) to direct as part of what would probably be a global effort to save lives. 'The CRF's role is to coordinate the rescue effort to ensure the best use of the assets assigned to the rescue task group.'

Pasila centre renovation contract awarded in Helsinki, Finland
Finnish developer SRV and Senate Properties, an unincorporated state enterprise, have embarked on a cooperative project to renovate the Pasila Government Agency Centre in Helsinki, Finland. SRV's contract is valued at €28.5m ($29.7m) with no added VAT, with the project set for inclusion in SRV's order backlog this February. The project will see the 1982-built facility transformed into Finland's 'largest' shared workspace. The centre is set to become a hub, providing shared workspaces for 12 different operators and a service point for visitors. Senate Properties construction manager Joel Saarinen said: "Common work environments meet the needs of a changed working life, reduce emissions and bring savings. The goal of the state's premises strategy is that a quarter of the state's personnel work in shared work environments by 2030. "When several agencies share the same premises, it is possible to reduce unnecessary square meters and thus save not only office space costs but also property maintenance costs." The extensive renovation will lead to changes in the property's interior layouts, which cover a total scope of approximately 31,000m², with about 19,000m² of this space being renovated. Construction is scheduled to start this month, with the renovated premises expected to be handed over to the client by early 2026. The updated centre will accommodate a variety of government entities, including the Finnish Tax Administration, Statistics Finland, and the Social Security Appeal Board, among others. Once the project is completed, it is anticipated that roughly 5,200 people will work within the Pasila Government Agency Centre by the end of 2026. Last month, SRV secured a deal with Projekti GH for the Garden Helsinki project, which includes a multipurpose arena and additional facilities in Töölö, Helsinki.
