Second US fighter jet falls overboard from US aircraft carrier
WASHINGTON — For the second time in just eight days, a US fighter jet has been lost to the Red Sea after falling from the USS Harry S Truman aircraft carrier, US officials say. An F/A-18F Super Hornet was attempting to land on the Truman's flight deck on Tuesday when a manoeuvre failed, "causing the aircraft to go overboard", an official told the BBC's US partner CBS News. The two crew members inside the aircraft ejected, and sustained minor injuries in the incident. The jets are reportedly worth around $67m (£50m) each. "Both aviators safely ejected and were rescued by a helicopter assigned to Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 11," the official told CBS. It comes after another Super Hornet went overboard into the same sea last Monday in a separate incident. It was "under tow in the hangar bay when the move crew lost control of the aircraft", a US Navy statement said. A sailor sustained minor injuries, and a tractor that had been towing the aircraft was also pulled into the the second incident, officials said there was a failure of an arrestment — referring to a cable that is used to help slow down a jet as it incident is still under investigation, and the aircraft has yet to be jet may have tipped overboard after the aircraft carrier made a sharp turn while taking evasive action against Houthi militants in Yemen, US officials told hours earlier on Tuesday, President Donald Trump announced that the US would stop attacking the Iran-backed Houthis if the group stopped targeting shipping in the Red Truman has been involved in several incidents in its Red Sea deployment, including last December, when the USS Gettysburg mistakenly shot down another F/A-18 fighter jet that was operating from the carrier. F-18 fighter jet rolls off USS Truman aircraft carrier and sinks into Red Sea; how much US Navy loses?
A US F/A-18E Super Hornet fighter jet fell into the Red Sea on Monday after slipping off the USS Harry S Truman aircraft carrier while being towed, the Navy said. The fighter jet slipped off the hangar deck of the USS Harry S Truman as sailors were towing it into the hangar bay, the Navy said. The aircraft, assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron 136 , fell into the Red Sea after the towing crew lost control during the move. "The F/A-18E was actively under tow in the hangar bay when the move crew lost control of the aircraft. The aircraft and tow tractor were lost overboard," the Navy said in a statement. The crew members in the Super Hornet's cockpit and on the towing vehicle jumped out safely before both went overboard into the Red Sea. One sailor had minor injuries, but everyone was accounted for. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Google Analytics tools for improving business website engagement business website engagement | Search ads Search Now Undo "Sailors towing the aircraft took immediate action to move clear of the aircraft before it fell overboard," the Navy said. Navy: U.S. fighter jet falls off aircraft carrier and into Red Sea $60 million F/A-18E aircraft The $60 million aircraft's loss occurred during routine repositioning operations, which are standard procedures for flight preparation and maintenance work. The Navy has launched an investigation into the latest incident, though, it is still unclear if the Navy will try to recover the lost jet. A US official told CNN that the USS Harry S Truman's sharp turn to avoid Houthi fire may have caused the F/A-18E fighter jet to fall into the Red Sea. The Houthi rebels claimed responsibility for launching drone and missile attacks on the aircraft carrier that day, the outlet said. USS Harry S Truman, commissioned in 1998 The USS Truman has been stationed in the Middle East since February, participating in strikes against Houthi militants in Yemen from March 15. US Central Command confirmed ongoing daily military operations involving fighter jets, bombers, ships and drones. Defence secretary Pete Hegseth had extended the Truman's deployment by approximately one month. The USS Harry S Truman, commissioned in 1998, is a 1,092-foot aircraft carrier capable of speeds over 30 knots. It can carry around 90 aircraft and accommodate more than 5,000 crew members, the CBS new reported. The carrier recently underwent repairs following a collision with a merchant vessel near Egypt. In December, it experienced another F/A-18 incident when the USS Gettysburg accidentally shot down one of its fighters, though the pilots safely ejected.

US loses $60m fighter jet after it falls off aircraft carrier into sea
The US navy has admitted to losing a $60 million fighter jet after it fell off an aircraft carrier into the Red Sea. The F/A-18 Super Hornet is said to have toppled overboard when the USS Harry S Truman made a sharp turn to evade an attack by Houthi rebels in the Middle East. A sailor is said to have sustained a minor injury during the incident. A US official told CNN that the aircraft, which are valued at around $60 million, had sunk. It is currently unclear whether authorities intend to mount a recovery effort. 'The F/A-18E was actively under tow in the hangar bay when the move crew lost control of the aircraft. The aircraft and tow tractor were lost overboard,' the US navy said in a statement. 'Sailors towing the aircraft took immediate action to move clear of the aircraft before it fell overboard. An investigation is under way.' Fighter jets are routinely towed around the hangar deck to position them for military operations or other work. The US navy added that the Harry S Truman Carrier Strike Group, which is composed of the aircraft carrier, nine aircraft squadrons, three guided-missile destroyers, and the cruiser USS Gettysburg, are still 'mission capable'. The Houthis, the Iranian-backed Yemen rebel group, said earlier on Monday that it had launched a drone and missile attack on the aircraft carrier. The USS Harry S Truman was deployed to the Middle East in mid December, where it spent two months defending commercial shipping from Houthi attacks. It collided with a merchant vessel in February and was sent to a US navy base in Greece for repairs, and was redeployed to the region a couple of weeks later. In July 2022, the US navy lost a F/A-18 Super Hornet at sea when it was blown overboard from an aircraft carrier by heavy winds near Naples. Another Super Hornet was shot down over the Red Sea in an apparent 'friendly fire' incident in December 2024.
