Elderly Malaysian driver suffers a stroke, crashes car into coffee shop, killing 1 diner

PHOTO: THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK SUNGAI PETANI - Saleswoman Han Chin Tin was enjoying her usual breakfast at a coffee shop in Jalan Taman Bersatu, when unfortunately, it turned out to be her last meal. The 55-year-old woman was killed on the spot when a car crashed into the shop at about 9am. The driver of the car suffered a stroke while behind the wheel, losing control of the vehicle. Kuala Muda OCPD assistant commissioner Wan Azharuddin Wan Ismail said on April 28 that Ms Han died at the scene, as she suffered injuries to her arms, legs, face and head. He added that the 68-year-old driver, also a woman, had suffered a minor stroke before she accidentally stepped on the vehicle's accelerator. She sustained injuries to her chest and legs. 'The driver suffered a minor stroke, causing her to lose control of her vehicle and veer into a coffee shop,' he said. The crash is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving, which carries a jail term of between five and 10 years, a fine of between RM20,000 (S$6,030) and RM50,000 and disqualification from holding or obtaining a driving licence for at least five years. Kedah MB wants to follow Terengganu in banning vape sales
SUNGAI PETANI: Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor said he wants to emulate the Terengganu government's move to ban electronic cigarette or vape sales. Sanusi said he would raise the matter at the state executive council meeting next week. "If possible, we want to emulate Terengganu's move. "I was told that vaping is hazardous, even more dangerous than cigarettes, due to chemical usage. "There is also concern over the abuse of 'magic mushrooms' among teenagers," he said after opening Akademi Darul Ilmi's tahfiz students' graduation ceremony here. Present were the state Education, Information and Religious Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Azam Abdul Samat and the academy's founder, Ustaz Mohamad Wadi Anuar Ayub. The use of "magic mushroom" vape products is emerging as a serious concern in Malaysia's illicit drug landscape. On Friday, the Terengganu government announced a statewide ban on the sale of electronic cigarette (vape) products at all premises starting Aug 1. Its state Local Government, Housing and Health Committee chairman Datuk Wan Sukairi Wan Abdullah said the decision was to curb the sale and use of vape products, which might have negative health effects on the younger generation. He was reported as saying that stern action would be taken against any vape business operators who defied the ban, under the Local Government Act 1976 (Act 171) bylaws, including fines, seizures and court action.

Extend Jalur Gemilang badge to preschoolers, says Aaron
SUNGAI PETANI: The National Unity Ministry has proposed extending the use of the Jalur Gemilang badge on student uniforms to younger age groups, including those in kindergartens. National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang said the initiative would be a positive step toward fostering patriotism from an early stage in children's development. "It's already in place for school children, and there should be no issue in extending it to preschoolers, as it will help instil love for the country from a young age," he said when launching the "Jom Baca Bersama 10 Minit 2025" and "Baucar Buku Semarak Membaca 2025" today. The programme was held in conjunction with World Book and Copyright Day today. The use of the Jalur Gemilang badge on student uniforms, implemented in stages across all educational institutions under the purview of the Education Ministry, began yesterday. The initiative covers government schools, government-aided schools, matriculation colleges, and the Malaysian Teacher Education Institute, with the aim of nurturing patriotism among both students and educators.

Its minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang said the initiative would help to foster patriotism from an early stage. "It's already in place for school children (from Year One and above) and there should be no issue in extending it to kindergarten students," he said when launching the "Jom Baca Bersama 10 Minit 2025" and "Baucar Buku Semarak Membaca 2025" on Tuesday (April 22). The use of the Jalur Gemilang badge on student uniforms, implemented in stages across all educational institutions under the purview of the Education Ministry, began on Monday (April 21). The initiative covers government schools, government-aided schools, matriculation colleges, and the Malaysian Teacher Education Institute, with the aim of nurturing patriotism among both students and educators. – Bernama
