SVYM collaborates with Mysore Medical College to train volunteers in palliative care

In a positive step towards promoting community-based palliative care, the Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement (SVYM), in collaboration with the Mysore Medical College and Research Institute (MMC&RI), is launching a Palliative Care Volunteer Training Programme under the initiative 'Har Ghar Jeeva Sevak' (A compassionate caregiver in every home). The programme aims to equip citizens with basic skills and knowledge required to care for individuals suffering from life-limiting illnesses in home settings. The training, which is free and open to the public, will be conducted on June 26 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Palliative Care Centre, PKTB and CD Hospital on KRS Road in Mysuru. The training includes modules on the fundamentals of palliative care, pain and symptom management, communication and emotional support, end-of-life care, and home-based caregiving skills. Upon completion, participants will receive a certificate of participation. 'Our vision is to ensure that every household has at least one trained individual — a Jeeva Sevak — who can support the seriously or chronically ill, and elderly people at home,' SVYM said in a press release. The training is open to youth, students, home makers, retired individuals, and anyone with a desire to serve, with no prior medical experience required, the release added. Palliative care has been a part of SVYM's health services since 2011, and its team has supported more than 10,000 families over the years. The programme emphasises a holistic approach that addresses the physical, emotional, psychological, social, and spiritual needs of patients, the release stated.
