Benjamin Nygren showed resilience to battle through tough times – now he's ready for the top & can be a Celtic star
His former captain gives valuable insight into what makes the Sweden cap tick SWEDE SUCCESS Benjamin Nygren showed resilience to battle through tough times – now he's ready for the top & can be a Celtic star Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) DAVID BOO WIKLANDER always knew Benjamin Nygren would reach the top. But the former IFK Gothenborg captain admires how Celtic's latest summer signing overcame setbacks to get there. 6 Benjamin Nygren completed his Celtic move last week 6 The Sweden international has taken a winding route to the top 6 And his former captain Boo Wiklander revealed the hardships Nygren has endured Wiklander was the Swedish club's skipper when Nygren broke into the first team as a 17-year-old in 2018. Every top club in Europe wanted the talented teen back then, but he surprisingly chose Genk — and the £4million switch didn't go as planned. Nygren struggled in Belgium and spent time on loan at Heerenveen before joining Nordsjaelland in Denmark. There the versatile attacker blossomed and Wiklander followed his progress with interest. When Nygren broke into the Sweden squad and scored, Wiklander beamed with pride as he watched his former team-mate shine on the biggest stage. Now the 40-year-old insists the new Celt has earned his big move through determination and dedication. He told SunSport: 'I really admire how Benjamin has handled the journey. 'Football careers rarely follow a straight line. 'Benjamin has shown a lot of character and resilience to keep developing after what was a tough spell for him at Genk. 'He has taken each step with professionalism and grown from the experience. Nygren 'will be Hoops' best transfer this summer' plus Kuhn, Yamada latest | Celtic transfer special 'Seeing him score for Sweden was fantastic. It made me very proud, honestly. 'It's always special to see someone you shared a dressing room with reach that level — and he truly deserved it. 'Those moments are a reward for years of dedication. 'A move to Celtic is a brilliant step for him. It's a massive club with passionate fans and a great history. 'And if he gets to play in the Champions League, it will be another valuable chapter in his development. 'I believe that he is ready for the challenge.' Nygren bailed out Wiklander in one of his first outings for Gothenburg, against Orebro. The defender's own goal had given their rivals a way back into the game at 2-1, but the young forward scored the clincher. Wiklander knew Nygren had something special from the moment he started training with Gothenburg's senior stars. And he wasn't surprised when the likes of Bayern Munich, Inter Milan and Manchester City all showed an interest in snapping him up. He said: 'I do remember that game against Orebro! 'It was not my finest moment with my own goal, but it was a great day for Benjamin. 'He really announced himself in that game. 'You could see how much it meant to him, and we were all happy for him in the dressing room afterwards. 'When the big clubs started showing interest in Benjamin, it wasn't a surprise. 'He had the profile that top teams look for — technically gifted, tactically smart and with a lot of upside. "He was also very mature for his age, which made him stand out even more.' Nygren's mentality also made him stand out for Wiklander, who saw many talented teens try to make the grade. Some think they have arrived long before they have — but he was different. 6 There was no doubting Nygren's ability but his Gothenburg captain always felt that the other side of the game would take him far. Wiklander said: 'I remember Benjamin as a very grounded and hard-working young player when he first broke into the team. 'Even at a young age, he carried himself with confidence and humility, which is not always common. 'You could tell straight away that he had both the mindset and the talent to go far.' Nygren, 23, is known for being a personality and has shown in the past that he isn't afraid to mix it up. Given the roles he can play and positions he takes up, the new Celt can expect to come in for some heavy treatment from opposing defenders. But Wiklander doesn't expect the physical nature of Scottish football to be an issue. He added: 'Benjamin always had a certain elegance and composure with the ball. It looked natural to him. 'But he also adapted quickly to the pace and physicality of senior football, which again spoke to both his technical quality and mental strength. 'He didn't seem fazed by the step up.' Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers is likely to use Nygren as an attacking midfielder, but he can operate in various positions across the front. He has played as a striker for Sweden and he is also comfortable drifting in from the right wing. 6 Brendan Rodgers will be able to deploy Nygren in a number of positions Wiklander, now working in wealth management, wouldn't want to give him a specific position and instead told Celtic fans to enjoy his class and versatility. He said: 'Celtic supporters can expect a very modern player in Benjamin. 'He's technically clean, calm under pressure and intelligent with and without the ball. 'He's versatile, has a great left foot and reads the game well. He also has the kind of attitude that coaches love — humble but driven.' Nygren spoke of his real excitement at the move when he was unveiled on Friday. 6 Nygren is following in the footsteps of other Swedes who shone at Celtic - especially Henrik Larsson Credit: AFP He has a few tough Swedish acts to follow at Parkhead — especially Henrik Larsson, who is revered as a club legend. Johan Mjallby, Mikael Lustig and Carl Starfelt are other compatriots who have given Celtic great service over the years. Wiklander doesn't want to label Nygren as the next Larsson, but is convinced he will become a popular and important player. He said: 'Henrik Larsson is, of course, a legend and a tough act to follow! 'But I believe Benjamin has the quality and the mindset to make a big impact at Celtic. 'If he stays healthy and continues working the way he has, the fans will quickly see what he brings to the team.' Chelsea player ratings vs Everton By Lloyd Canfield ENZO MARESCA watched on from the stands as Chelsea stole a 1-0 win at home to Everton. The game was shocked into life after 26 minutes when good pressure from the home side saw Nicolas Jackson take the ball on the turn and rifle it into the back of Jordan Pickford's net, his first goal since returning from injury. It was by no means easy after they grabbed the opener though, as the Blues dominated possession but failed to add more goals to their tally. So who was to blame for another lethargic display? Did Cole Palmer finally show signs of improvement? Check out our Chelsea player ratings. Djurgården have made a slow start to the new Allsvenskan season.
