Sabah BN slams Jeffrey over 'federal arrogance' claim

Nik Mohd Nadzri KOTA KINABALU (May 16): Sabah Barisan Nasional (BN) has fired back at Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Jeffrey Kitingan over his latest claims of 'federal arrogance,' saying the real issue lies with the state's leadership, not Putrajaya. Sabah BN Communications Director Nik Mohd Nadzri Nik Zawawi questioned Jeffrey's repeated accusations against the Federal Government, calling them a distraction from his failure to deliver tangible progress for the state. 'Datuk Seri Panglima Jeffrey Kitingan has once again chosen to point fingers at the Federal Government, claiming there is 'federal arrogance' towards Sabah. But the reality is that under the 2025 Budget, Sabah received RM6.7 billion in development allocation an increase from the previous year. That clearly shows the Federal Government's commitment to Sabah,' he said. Nik Mohd Nadzri said it was time state leaders stop deflecting blame and start showing results. 'If the allocations have been given, where are the outcomes? Why is Sabah still struggling with the same trio of problems — water, roads, and electricity? Isn't the majority of the allocation already channeled directly to state agencies and ministries?' he pointed out. 'So who is truly being arrogant? The Federal Government that provides, or the state leaders who fail to manage? asked Nik Mohd Nadzri. He criticised the frequent use of slogans like 'Sabah for Sabahans' when, he argued, those in power have little to show in terms of actual performance. 'Stop hiding behind slogans when performance is lacking. Don't blame the umbrella when you don't know how to dance,' he said. He noted that Jeffrey has held various positions over decades moving from opposition to government, and now serving as Deputy Chief Minister, but has reverted to the same narrative whenever challenged by the public. 'Every time the people demand results, he returns to the old drama: 'The Federation is arrogant. Sabah is oppressed,'' Nik Mohd Nadzri opined. He also rejected the logic behind the accusation of federal arrogance, pointing to consistent increases in Sabah's federal budget and ongoing development projects. 'If Putrajaya were truly arrogant, why does Sabah's budget keep increasing every year? Why do projects keep moving despite limited state revenue? Why does the Federal Government continue to assist a state led by someone like him?' he said, adding that the people are no longer easily swayed by political rhetoric. 'The people know the difference between leaders who work and those who just shout. Sabah does not need leaders who trade in emotions, it needs leaders who solve problems,' he said and reaffirmed BN Sabah's stand against divisive narratives and empty slogans, saying real strength lies in leadership that is efficient, accountable and built on integrity. 'Our problem today does not stem from Putrajaya, but from hands that have failed to manage the people's allocations with honesty and trust,' Nik Mohd Nadzri stressed adding, 'Federal arrogance is the excuse of those who fail to prove their own success.'

Put solutions and results before politics, Phoong tells Sabah DAP members

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah DAP's priority must be on sound policies and results that benefit the people instead of playing political games, says its chairman Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe. He said the party must propose clear solutions to Sabah's pressing challenges, deliver real progress, articulate its vision for the state's future, and earn the people's trust through hard work and tangible outcomes. 'DAP now plays a governing role at both federal and state levels and its leaders, from ministers and assemblymen to grassroots members, must live up to the expectation of being capable and results-oriented,' he said after the party's 2025 Leadership Retreat here from Friday to Sunday (May 2 to 4). He also called on members to maintain a clear identity and focus amid the fluid and unpredictable political landscape in Sabah. According to Phoong, the party remained open to constructive dialogue with any party that shares its reformist direction. He also said any talk of a political alliance for the upcoming state election was premature. 'Alliances must go beyond stability. They must also propose a governing vision. That's why I've always stressed, before we talk about alliances, let's talk about policies first. That's the role DAP hopes to play,' Phoong said. Last month, Sabah Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin said the coalition had decided to form an alliance with Sabah Pakatan Harapan for the state polls. Phoong responded that Sabah DAP was open to working with Sabah Barisan but that a formal meeting must be held first with other members of Pakatan. The DAP Leadership Retreat saw national and state party leaders gather with grassroots representatives for in-depth discussions on election strategy, governance policies, and the future of Sabah. Among those present were national chairman Gobind Singh Deo, national organising secretary Khoo Poay Tiong, publicity secretary Yeo Bee Yin, strategy director Liew Chin Tong, political education director Howard Lee, elections director Wong Kah Woh, and state party secretary Vivian Wong.

'Sabah BN will return as backbone of state govt'

KUALA LUMPUR: Sabah Barisan Nasional (BN) is confident it will rise again to become the backbone of the state government in the next state elections. Sabah Umno information chief Datuk Suhaimi Nasir said this was based on the current level of support for the party. "From what I have observed recently, although many claim that local parties are better, as is the case in Sarawak, we must understand that there are significant differences between Sabah and Sarawak. "But can BN become the backbone again after 2018? God-willing, in the next state elections, there is a strong possibility that we can return as the core of the state government. "This is because BN's fall in Sabah was not due to losing the elections, but rather due to party-hopping," he said during a meeting with selected media on Tuesday. Suhaimi was responding to questions about Sabah BN's ability to regain its strength despite grassroots sentiment favouring local parties ahead of the state elections, which are expected to be held soon. The Libaran member of parliament said party-hopping in 2018 and political fatigue among the younger Sabah electorate were among the issues the coalition was facing. He said recurring infrastructure issues, particularly roads, water supply and electricity, were among the things BN would bring up with the electorate. "Road problems, water issues and electricity outages continued even during Ramadan. "The infrastructure has not been properly repaired or restored and this is not even touching on governance issues. "There are complaints about what people are calling 'bait' from the state government, such as the recently announced insurance assistance during the state assembly session. "The public is not happy with these kinds of offers. "This is what is happening now, especially among the younger generation. "Voters aged 20 to 30 are starting to think about which government to support and they are saying that there is no better option. Only BN is the right choice."

Bung says again – talks with PH ongoing

Published on: Sunday, April 27, 2025 Published on: Sun, Apr 27, 2025 By: Winnie Kasmir Text Size: Bung also proposed that both major parties join forces to face the coming Sabah State Election in a bid to maintain political stability and ensure the continuity of the unity government's administration at the State level. SANDAKAN: Sabah Barisan Nasional (BN) Chairman Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin said preliminary discussions on cooperation between Umno-BN and Pakatan Harapan (PH) have begun internally, even though no formal announcement has yet been made. According to Bung, the proposal has received positive feedback from both parties, and talks are ongoing to iron out the technical aspects to align their respective approaches. 'I am confident and believe that our goal is to ensure that the unity government across the country remains secure and undisturbed,' he said. Bung also proposed that both major parties join forces to face the coming Sabah State Election in a bid to maintain political stability and ensure the continuity of the unity government's administration at the State level. He said BN Malaysia Chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is optimistic on the collaboration and is expected to make an official announcement soon. Commenting on the status of Datuk Shahelmy Yahya, Bung clarified that his membership has been suspended for six years due to disloyalty to the party, in line with a decision made at last year's party meeting. 'His status is clear. Any member or leader who defies the party's decisions will face disciplinary action as stipulated in Umno's constitution,' he stressed. He said Umno does not need candidates who are driven by personal interests without genuine loyalty to the party's cause. Bung made these remarks when speaking to the media during a Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house hosted by BN Sekong Coordinator, Mohd Zharif Aizat Datuk Samsudin, at Sri Taman. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
