SANDAKAN: Sabah Barisan Nasional (BN) Chairman Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin said preliminary discussions on cooperation between Umno-BN and Pakatan Harapan (PH) have begun internally, even though no formal announcement has yet been made. According to Bung, the proposal has received positive feedback from both parties, and talks are ongoing to iron out the technical aspects to align their respective approaches. 'I am confident and believe that our goal is to ensure that the unity government across the country remains secure and undisturbed,' he said. Bung also proposed that both major parties join forces to face the coming Sabah State Election in a bid to maintain political stability and ensure the continuity of the unity government's administration at the State level. He said BN Malaysia Chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is optimistic on the collaboration and is expected to make an official announcement soon. Commenting on the status of Datuk Shahelmy Yahya, Bung clarified that his membership has been suspended for six years due to disloyalty to the party, in line with a decision made at last year's party meeting. 'His status is clear. Any member or leader who defies the party's decisions will face disciplinary action as stipulated in Umno's constitution,' he stressed. He said Umno does not need candidates who are driven by personal interests without genuine loyalty to the party's cause. Bung made these remarks when speaking to the media during a Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house hosted by BN Sekong Coordinator, Mohd Zharif Aizat Datuk Samsudin, at Sri Taman. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Ukrainian drones force suspension of Russian electronics factory

MOSCOW: Work at an electronics factory in Russia's Chuvashia region, some 600 kilometres east of Moscow, was briefly suspended on Monday after a Ukrainian drone attack, local officials said. Moscow said falling debris from intercepted drones fell on the facility, while Ukraine claimed a direct hit on the site. 'This morning, Ukrainian attempts to use drones in Chuvashia were detected,' regional governor Oleg Nikolayev wrote on Telegram. 'Two drones fell on the territory of the VNIIR factory,' said Nikolayev, adding that there were no casualties. The site is one of the main factories producing electronic components in Russia. Ukraine's General Staff said in a statement that it had targeted 'a military-industrial complex facility, where antennas for Shahed (drones) were manufactured'. Russia fires dozens of Iranian-designed Shahed attack drones at Ukrainian cities on a daily basis. Ukraine regularly launches retaliatory drone strikes in response to Moscow's aerial bombardments, which began with its full-scale offensive into Ukrainian territory more than three years ago. 'Strikes on the facilities that support the armed aggression of the Russian Federation will continue until it is completely stopped,' Ukraine's General Staff added. Governor Nikolayev said that the decision had been taken to 'temporarily suspend production to ensure the safety of employees'. Russia's defence ministry said it intercepted 49 Ukrainian drones overnight. Ukraine said it shot down 'dozens' of Russian drones over its western Rivne region. The massive Russian attack saw Ukraine's western neighbour Poland scramble fighter jets to secure its airspace, Warsaw's Operational Command said in a statement on social media.

'See you in court': Fahmi Reza's fight over travel ban - What we know so far

SHAH ALAM - Activist and graphic designer Fahmi Reza has publicly disputed official explanations after being stopped from boarding a flight at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), fuelling a public debate over whether his freedom of movement was improperly restricted. Here's what is known so far: The controversy began on June 7, when Fahmi posted on Facebook and Instagram claiming that he had been barred from leaving Malaysia while trying to board a flight to Singapore. An immigration officer reportedly told him that he was blacklisted. Fahmi also pointed out that he had recently been barred from entering Sabah. His post went viral, drawing public scrutiny and media coverage. In response, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim instructed Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay to investigate the matter. The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) issued a statement affirming that the government respects individual freedoms 'as long as they do not compromise national security or violate existing laws' and requested further clarification from the police. Later the same day, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain issued a statement clarifying that no official travel ban had been imposed on Fahmi Reza. Razarudin explained that Fahmi's name was on an internal police movement monitoring list due to ongoing investigations but that this list does not impose any legal restriction on travel. 'It must be emphasised that this list does not imply any restrictions but is part of the standard monitoring procedures implemented by the authorities,' the statement read. Razarudin added that a procedural error occurred during Fahmi's airport clearance process, resulting in an erroneous movement restriction order being triggered. 'The matter is being reviewed with appropriate steps to be taken to refine existing procedures,' he said. He also reaffirmed that the police remained committed to respecting the freedom of movement of all Malaysians. According to the police, Fahmi is free to travel in and out of Malaysia, subject to existing immigration regulations. However, Fahmi rejected the explanation and published a new statement on social media on June 8, responding directly to Anwar's and the IGP's statements. In an open letter addressed to the Madani Government, Fahmi wrote: "I have read Anwar Ibrahim's response blaming the police and the police blaming Immigration, saying 'no official restrictions' and that 'confusion occurred during the clearance process.'' "Do you know what I don't see? I don't see anyone in the government taking responsibility for the mistake that caused my right to freedom of movement to be blocked." "You can say 'no official restriction' easily. But in reality, I was blocked yesterday. I was not allowed to leave the country. I was denied my rights as a citizen." He went on to criticise what he sees as a lack of accountability, writing: 'I'm just an ordinary citizen. You blocked me, caused trouble, wasted my time and money and then wash your hands of it.' Fahmi ended his statement with a clear warning that he intends to take legal action: 'This time, it's the people's turn to take the authorities to court. The government and authorities are not immune. The people must be brave to fight back. You always tell us to 'use the right channels', right? Okay, we'll see you in court.' Malaysians on social media also weighed in on the issue. Instagram user @ urged, 'Please sue the government, we need it to happen.' Another user, @hizapizza, voiced support by saying, 'Yes, we have your back. The government is meant to serve the people, not the other way around.' @yixian_ong added, 'You are the check and balance we yearned for. It is unfortunate that it comes at such a cost. Power to the people!' Meanwhile, @syedddsolehin remarked, 'It does not matter whether it is Pakatan Harapan (PH) or Perikatan Nasional (PN) in power. We, the citizens, stay the same, left to accept whatever decisions are made on our behalf.'

Hadi stepping down would cause only minor disruption in PAS, says analyst

Published on: Monday, June 09, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 09, 2025 By: Anne Muhammad, FMT Text Size: It was reported that Abdul Hadi Awang had hinted at stepping down as PAS president due to health reasons. PETALING JAYA: PAS may experience only a brief period of instability if its president Abdul Hadi Awang were to step down, a political analyst says in response to growing speculation over the party's top leadership. Syaza Shukri said that any successor to Hadi might need some time to gain the full support of members, given the Marang MP's strong charisma and leadership of PAS since 2003, following the death of Fadzil Noor. Advertisement 'I believe that if Hadi is replaced by a trusted figure within the party such as Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man or Takiyuddin Hassan, there won't be major issues, and the party's stability can likely be maintained, especially with the backing of its Dewan Ulama and Syura Council. 'The new leader would need time to build confidence among members and establish legitimacy,' the International Islamic University Malaysia academic told FMT. Last week, Sinar Harian reported that Hadi had hinted at stepping down due to health reasons. It is understood that he expressed this intention to senior party leaders at a recent retreat in Terengganu. The development fuelled speculation on the positions of the PAS president and deputy president ahead of the party's internal election, expected in September. Advertisement Dewan Ulama committee member Mokhtar Senik claimed there had been calls for Hadi to relinquish the top post, although this was denied by state-level leaders. Johor PAS Youth chief Ahmad Nawfal Mahfodz alleged that such efforts stemmed from external parties who were unhappy with PAS's performance under Hadi's leadership. However, Azmi Hassan of Akademi Nusantara said the pressure was coming from within the party as well, as some factions wanted to see PAS emerge as a stronger entity. He also acknowledged the presence of 'quiet movements' signalling the possible need for a change in leadership. 'That's why the ulama faction insists that the party's top two positions must continue to be held by religious scholars. 'But the pressure from the professionals seems more pronounced right now, because there's a sense that PAS needs reform,' he said. Azmi added that while PAS members were known for their loyalty to the party's leadership, many believed that change was necessary, albeit voluntary change and not through force. 'That's why there's a quiet, indirect movement to signal to Hadi that change is needed. And it does seem to be having some effect, hence the talk that both the number one and two positions should remain under the ulama faction,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
