Sabah Library Week promotes lifelong learning, community engagement

KOTA KINABALU (Aug 5): Various engaging activities have been planned across all Sabah State Library branches in conjunction with Library Week 2025, which runs from August 4 to 17. Sabah State Library director George Yih Ching Yaw said the initiative aims to bring the community closer to the library and encourage them to make it part of their everyday lives. Among the highlights is the night@thelibrary programme, set to take place at the library headquarters in Kota Kinabalu on August 9 and the Tawau branch on August 16. 'These weekend events are designed to position the library as not just a place to read, but also a destination for recreational and knowledge-based activities,' said George during the launch ceremony at the Tanjung Aru branch. He noted that this year's theme, Libraries Empowering Lives, reflects the library's evolving role in fostering knowledge, empowering minds and contributing to community well-being. 'Libraries are no longer just book repositories. They now serve as dynamic learning centres that support lifelong learning and promote digital literacy,' he added. These services are also extended to vulnerable groups, including people with disabilities and rural communities, through inclusive and comprehensive strategies. George shared that since the programme's inception in 1985, it has grown significantly, with 1,194 activities held last year alone, attracting 74,366 participants. Meanwhile, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Arifin Datuk Mohd Arif, in a message delivered by his ministry's permanent secretary Hassan Mahali, reaffirmed the ministry's support for development programmes that incorporate technology and innovation. He said such efforts align with the government's goals to enhance the rakyat's capacity through informal, inclusive educational platforms accessible to all levels of society.

Pangolin among main target of poachers: Sabah Wildlife Department

SANDAKAN: The pangolin, or tenggiling as it is locally known, is one of the world's most unique mammals but also one of the most heavily poached and illegally traded. Sabah Wildlife Department Director Mohd Soffian Abu Bakar said that although pangolins are fully protected under Schedule 1 of Sabah's wildlife regulations, they continue to face serious threats. These include longstanding traditional beliefs, demand in the black market, habitat loss, and a general lack of public awareness. He said this during the launch of Pangolin Awareness Day: Protecting Endangered Species of Sabah, held at the Sabah State Library Sandakan Branch, recently. His speech was delivered by Sabah Wildlife Officer Hussien Muin. The programme was jointly organised by Pangolin Aware and the Sabah Wildlife Department, with support from the Sandakan Branch of the Sabah State Library as the host. Also present were representatives from Pangolin Aware, Sabah State Library Sandakan Branch, and various wildlife conservation partners, including Orangutan Appeal UK, Borneo Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC), Wildlife Rescue Unit (WRU), Wildlife Junior Rangers from SM St. Michael Sandakan, as well as teachers and students from SMK Perempuan Sandakan and SMK Merpati Sandakan. Soffian said that such event was crucial in raising public awareness, especially among students, about their role in protecting wildlife and the environment. He added that wildlife conservation is not the responsibility of a single agency, but a shared effort that requires ongoing collaboration from all sectors. He also called on the public to continue working together to protect the pangolin and other endangered species in Sabah. Sabah libraries attract 474,399 visitors in first half of 2025
KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah State Library welcomed 474,399 visitors in the first six months of 2025, reflecting strong public interest in its services. The figure was shared at the Sabah State Legislative Assembly by Assistant Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Datuk Harun Durabi. Last year, the state's entire library network recorded 1.34 million visitors. To maintain and increase engagement, the library organises various initiatives and programmes year-round. 'To boost visitor numbers, the library regularly conducts various initiatives and programmes throughout the year,' said Harun. Upcoming events include Library Week in August and the Children's Literature and Arts Festival in October. These activities aim to encourage reading habits among different age groups. In response to a supplementary question, Harun highlighted efforts to enhance digital access. The library is providing tablets at 10 branches to facilitate e-book usage, particularly in rural areas. 'This effort aims to draw more users, especially in rural areas, to utilise library resources,' he explained. - Bernama

Two Sabahans in book on Malaysia's top women

Former Sabah State Library Director cum and Malaysia's first female President of both the Kota Kinabalu and Sandakan Municipal Councils, Datuk Adeline Leong, joins Lt Colonel Patricia Yapp from Sandakan, the country's first female jet fighter pilot, as featured personalities in 'To Have It All' by Professor Puan Sri Paduka Dr Jamilah Ariffin. The book profiles 20 accomplished Malaysian women from diverse fields, including politics, academia, business, civil service, medicine, military and law enforcement. Notable figures include Federal Minister of Youth and Sports Hannah Yeoh, former High Court Judge Tan Sri Datuk Zainun Ali and Malaysia's first female Major General Datuk Major General Fadzlette Othman Merican. Author Prof Jamilah, a Development Studies expert from University of Malaya who has penned 17 books on women's development, brings unique insights from her academic work and community service. During her 17 years in Johor, she established 66 daycare centres for children with disabilities and training programmes for single mothers. The book addresses a pressing national concern Malaysia's declining birth rate, which has reportedly dropped to 1.6 children per woman well below the 2.1 replacement level needed to sustain population growth. Jamilah attributes this trend to changing life priorities, with motherhood becoming a choice rather than expectation, preferences for smaller families and rising infertility rates. 'To Have It All' offers practical guidance on managing work-life balance, stress management and the importance of family support systems. The author draws comparisons between successful Malaysian women and their counterparts in the United States, China and Hong Kong. The book targets a broad readership, including policymakers, educators, employers, researchers, parents and young women aspiring to excel in their careers while maintaining family life. New Kunak library soon

Advertisement The library building, valued at over RM6 million, began construction in September 2021 and was originally scheduled for full completion by September 2023. However, the project faced delays, including during the Covid-19 pandemic, which restricted activity across many sectors. Other contributing factors to the delay included a change in the construction site location and the shifting political landscape in Sabah following the 2018 state government transition. Approval for the development of the library was granted earlier during the State administration led by then Chief Minister Tun Musa Aman, who now serves as the Head of State. Residents in Kunak are hopeful that the development projects previously planned and approved will continue for the benefit of the wider community.
