Dundalk Thirds chalk up convincing win in Carlow with seven wickets to spare

Losing the toss and fielding first in St Patrick's College, Dundalk claimed an early wicket through youth seamer Siraj Sherzad. A 58-run partnership followed before Raheel Qamar and off-spinner Kapil Paija Pun combined for a flurry of middle order wickets to leave the hosts at 91-7 at drinks. Qamar recorded his best economy in an innings for Dundalk at just 2.5 runs an over. However, Ishaan Mohan helped Carlow to a late comeback from number nine, scoring 40 not out to deny Dundalk the three wickets they sought and setting the visitors a worryingly high target of 174. Pauric McCrum and Mohammed Bukhari partnered for 57 runs in the chase before Muhammad Umar hit an impressive 32 off 28 balls to bring the target within reach. Captain Sumit Kumar and Sourav Kunal saw the innings out, hitting a unbeaten 55 runs for the fourth wicket to clinch a third Division 20 win of the season with 31 balls to spare. Elsewhere, Dundalk Firsts and Seconds were bowled out in second innings chases against Finglas and Lucan respectively. Attention will turn to Dundalk First's T20 Cup final against Phoenix IV this Saturday, August 16. The young athlete showed remarkable dedication to his sport while maintaining his studies. His journey in athletics was particularly impressive, with numerous achievements at various levels of competition. He secured gold medals in national championships, earned silver medals in south zone competitions, and won bronze medals at state-level events. These accomplishments showcase his consistent performance and growing expertise in athletics. Coming from a railway employee's family, Sabeer's determination and hard work were evident in his sporting journey. He set his sights on qualifying for the World Athletics Championship in 2026 and also the Olympics, demonstrating unwavering commitment to his training regime and competitive preparations. The support from the Khelo India scheme provided him with the necessary infrastructure and training facilities to pursue his athletic career. Sabeer's achievements highlight the emerging talent from smaller cities in India and the importance of proper training facilities and support systems in nurturing young athletes. His story serves as an inspiration for many young athletes who dream of representing India at international sporting events. In conversation with TOI, Sayed Sabeer shared his journey, stating that his aspirations in athletics began during his seventh standard. From 2020 to 2022, he trained at DYSS, Dharwad, before transferring to DYSS Bengaluru. In 2023, he successfully cleared the selection trials for Khelo India State Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. Since 2023, he was rigorously training with his sights set on the World Athletics Championship for Under 20, scheduled for 2026. He aims to establish new records in both 200 metres and 400 metres events. Kamala Siddi, an international athlete employed with Indian Railways, acknowledged Sabeer's promising athletic abilities. She emphasised that he requires motivation and backing, and it will be great if organisations and companies extend their CSR initiatives to support his development at this crucial phase.
