Key takeaways from Rangers' 2025-26 NHL schedule release

Access the Rangers beat like never before Join Post Sports+ for exciting subscriber-only features, including real-time texting with Mollie Walker about the inside buzz on the Rangers. tRY IT NOW The 2025-26 season can't start soon enough for the Rangers, who are looking to return to playoff contention and distance themselves from the catastrophe that was last season. As they work to do so, however, the Blueshirts will have to face a tour of former players. It's a journey of their own making after the team took a nosedive in the standings early last year, which led to the departures of several lineup regulars in the first significant roster shake-up since the deadline purge of 2018. Tribute videos will be played on the Madison Square Garden jumbotron. Emotions will run high. 5 Rangers new head coach Mike Sullivan during his introductory press conference on May 8, 2025 at Madison Square Garden Training Center. Robert Sabo for NY Post The Rangers core as we once knew it will be scattered across the league, with a reminder in nearly every crevice of the 82-game schedule that was unveiled Wednesday afternoon. Beginning on Opening Night, ex-assistant coach Dan Muse and the Penguins will venture to MSG. That also means new Rangers head coach Mike Sullivan, who left Pittsburgh after 10 years this summer, will get to face his former team for the first time very early in the season. He will also make his grand return to the Steel City just four days later, after the Rangers open the road schedule at Buffalo. 5 Zac Jones looks on during the third period of an NHL preseason game against the Islanders at Madison Square Garden on Sept. 24, 2024. Noah K. Murray-NY Post If Zac Jones makes the Sabres lineup out of training camp, the 24-year-old defenseman would be the first ex-Ranger from last season's turmoil on the circuit. He could get the first crack at the club he never quite fit into, which led to him becoming a free agent this summer — after the Rangers didn't qualify him and he signed a one-year, two-way deal with the Sabres. The Rangers could see Filip Chytil for the first time since they traded the Czech Center to the Canucks, when they head to Vancouver on Oct. 28 as part of a four-game swing out west. 5 Filip Chytil Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post Since he suffered another concussion after the trade, Chytil couldn't play when the Canucks visited the Garden last season. Chytil, who said he plans to be ready by September, is set to return to MSG on Dec. 16. Just after visiting Chytil, the Rangers will see Kaapo Kakko and Ryan Lindgren in Seattle on Nov. 1 at the end of the western Canada swing. Though Kakko had a strong start to his Kraken tenure, Lindgren will just be getting started after signing a four-year, $18 million deal as a free agent from Colorado. 5 K'Andre Miller looks on during a Rangers game against the Panthers at Amerant Bank Arena last season. Sam Navarro-Imagn Images K'Andre Miller and the Hurricanes will be at the Garden on Nov. 4 for a highly anticipated matchup, after the Rangers traded the No. 22 pick in 2018 to Carolina earlier this month. Coming off a tough season, the 25-year-old blueliner will be looking to make a statement not only for his new club, but against his former one. Dec. 15 is also sure to be a memorable one, considering both ex-captain Jacob Trouba and 13-year Ranger Chris Kreider will be stepping back into MSG for the first time when the Ducks come to town. The Rangers already saw Trouba when they went to Anaheim last season, but the 31-year-old has not returned to the Garden since his tumultuous exit from the organization in early December. 5 Chris Kreider (center) celebrates with teammates after scoring during the third period of the Rangers' home game against the Lightning last season. AP Kreider, who was traded to Anaheim in June, is sure to be given a warm welcome back in New York. A front-loaded schedule, which features 23 road games of the first 41, will lead into a second half that includes a seven-game home stand at the end of March into early April. All four meetings with the Islanders are before the March 6 trade deadline. All three meetings with the Devils are after the trade deadline. The path back to Stanley Cup relevancy is set for the Rangers, with plenty of familiar faces to serve as frightful reminders and guide the way.

Sabres 2025-26 schedule: Opportunity for a hot start at home, plus more takeaways

The Buffalo Sabres are trying to avoid missing the playoffs for a 15th straight season, and we now know what their 2025-26 schedule will look like as they attempt to end the drought. Here's a full look at the schedule released Wednesday, with notes on some highlights of the Sabres' slate this season. One step closer to hockey 🤩 Full schedule breakdown → | @Ticketmaster — Buffalo Sabres (@BuffaloSabres) July 16, 2025 The Sabres play six of their first eight games at home, including three of their first four. The only two road trips during that stretch are quick ones to Boston and Montreal. The Sabres improved their home record last season and finished 14-3 in their final 17 games at KeyBank Center. If they can stack some wins early in the season in front of the home crowd, maybe they'll have a chance to start to fill the building and create more of a home-ice advantage. These early-season games aren't a cakewalk, though. The Rangers, Senators and Red Wings, all Eastern Conference wild-card contenders, come to Buffalo in the first few weeks of the season, along with the Panthers, Avalanche and Maple Leafs. The Sabres also have 10 of their first 14 games at home this season and only have two trips to Boston and one each to Montreal and Toronto during that stretch. After starting last season in Prague, the Sabres will have a much different travel situation to start this season. JJ Peterka won't have to wait too long for his first game back in Buffalo. Peterka, who was traded to Utah for Michael Kesselring and Josh Doan, will come to Buffalo as a member of the Mammoth on Nov. 4. While it won't be a Jack Eichel-level of atmosphere, it will be interesting to see how fans and former teammates respond to Peterka's return. The team didn't send out any farewell or thank you notes to Peterka on social media after the trade. It was well-documented that the 23-year-old wasn't interested in playing for the Sabres anymore. Maybe that will give the building some extra juice on a Tuesday in November. In December, the Sabres are going to have their longest road trip since January 2012. They start with a game in Philadelphia before traveling to Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver and Seattle. Only the Calgary and Edmonton games are back-to-back, but that's still a grueling stretch of travel. Last season, the Sabres fell apart in December. If they want to avoid a similar fate this season, they'll have to show up on the road. After a home-heavy start to the season, 10 of the Sabres' 14 games in December are on the road. Advertisement Because of the Olympic break, the Sabres play six games during February. Only one of those is at home. So, at least the calendar is clear for a Super Bowl parade if need be. The Sabres start February with a back-to-back on the road against Florida and Tampa Bay, and then finish the month with a back-to-back on the road against Florida and Tampa Bay. That's not going to make already tough matchups any easier. Even though the travel situation in December is more challenging, the opponents and lengthy break might make February one of the toughest parts of the schedule. After a mid-March West Coast swing to Vegas and California, the Sabres will get seven of their final 11 games at home against some beatable opponents. They host the Bruins, Red Wings, Kraken, Islanders, Lightning, Blue Jackets and Stars with road games against the Senators, Capitals, Rangers and Blackhawks mixed in. A lot can change between now and April, but that looks like a favorable stretch of games for the Sabres if they find themselves in the mix. Opinion: Why Leave Chirping to Players? Sabres Bring the Heat with Schedule Reveal

The NHL schedules will be released today, with each team posting the dates when they play their respective opponents at 1 p.m. ET. Most schedules will look relatively standard, except for one team that has gone above and beyond to release their upcoming opponents ahead of the schedule release in the most creative way: the Buffalo Sabres. The Sabres took an approach similar to the National Football League, unveiling their opponents as chicken wings on X, complete with clever captions and playful references. This creative strategy of taunting opponents is something no other NHL team has attempted this year. The Sabres focused on finding niche references for each team, offering fans fun hints about their opponents. For example, the Vancouver Canucks, displayed two orange wings on one side of the plate and one blue wing on the other. The caption? 'Where art thou, brother?' This was a reference to the Hughes brothers, Jack and Luke, who both play for the Devils (orange wings), and Quinn Hughes in Vancouver (blue wing). For the New Jersey Devils, the Sabres posted a single wing covered in flames with the caption: 'Hell.' The Sabres modeled their schedule release after the NFL, which has mastered turning schedule announcements into major social media events. The NFL's creative reveals generate buzz from both fans and media. Of course, the NHL faces a challenge the NFL doesn't: there are 82 games instead of 17. Creating a detailed video for every matchup would result in something closer to a 30-minute production. Instead, the Sabres thought outside the box, revealing their full season of opponents in a clever, digestible format. This type of creativity should become part of NHL culture. It sparks media coverage, excites fans, and adds personality to the league. Who doesn't love a little shade thrown at rival teams? The Sabres nailed it, incorporating subtle digs into their posts. Take their representation of the New York Rangers, for example. At first glance, the image of the wing seems harmless. But remember when Rangers staffers were given restrictions on access to players following an alleged conflict involving a staffer and a player? The Sabres hinted at that drama by positioning the Rangers' wing far from the camera. Keeping the admin a safe distance from the wing. They didn't stop there. The Toronto Maple Leafs' wing was drizzled with sauce, nothing unusual, until you read the caption: 'Choking hazard.' A not-so-subtle jab at Toronto's playoff struggles. While all of this was done in good fun, it highlights something important: more NHL teams should embrace this level of creativity. With an hour left before the official schedule drop, other teams still have a chance to jump on board, but so far, the Sabres stand alone. Hockey is fun. Why leave the chirping to the players? Let the social media teams have their moment to shine. Photo Credit: © Jerome Miron-Imagn Images
