150 Navodaya boys lock rooms over 'harassment' by principal
MEERUT: Over 150 male students at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in Lakhimpur Kheri locked themselves inside their hostel rooms and launched a hunger strike on Monday, demanding immediate suspension of the principal and his aide over alleged harassment, assault and misconduct. The protest, which lasted for more than seven hours, was triggered by an incident two days earlier when a class 10 student was allegedly beaten by a teacher. The boys refused to eat and remained inside the hostel. Several videos recorded during the agitation surfaced on social media. In one, a student mock-staged a suicide attempt, while others threatened self-harm if their complaints were ignored. The students refused to meet local officials and insisted on speaking only with an assistant commissioner-level officer from JNV. Around five hours later, assistant commissioner Suman Kumar arrived from Lucknow. He read out the students' complaints, which included several serious allegations. One referred to a June incident in which school electrician Sachin Sahu was allegedly confined to a room and beaten by the principal and his aide. "Whatever happened so far was either suppressed or proved baseless," the letter stated, without citing earlier incidents. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like AirSense 11 – Smart tech for deep sleep ResMed Buy Now Undo A student with his face covered posted a video on social media and WhatsApp, saying, "I am a student of Jawahar Navodaya School. I have covered my face so that no further action is taken against me. We are sitting peacefully in the rooms, and I request the committee that the higher officials - AC or DC - should come and talk to us and understand our problems. The principal should be transferred with immediate effect, and a formal inquiry should be conducted into his conduct. Kamal Ahmed should be transferred, and he should apologise publicly. Some senior officer - DM, AC, or DC of NVS - should come personally to talk to us directly." By then, the students had escalated their protest, declared a hunger strike and vowed not to end it until principal S K Saxena and staff member Kamal Ahmad were removed. Saxena told TOI, "We tried to speak with the students, but they insisted they would only talk to senior officials." District Magistrate (DM) Durga Shakti Nagpal said, "We have rescued all the students unhurt and are also trying to identify the instigators prompting the students to take such a step. We have also made a committee to address their grievances."
