Hawaiʻi Island fire department extinguishes public housing blaze
PUNA, Hawaii (KHON2) — Hawaiʻi Island fire officials extinguished a fire at Sacred Hearts Pubic Shelter Housing on the afternoon of May 23.
The fire department was first notified of the fire shortly after 3 p.m. Upon arrival, Hawaiʻi Island police had already cleared the scene of bystanders and assisted in evacuations.

First responders found a single occupant residential wooden-framed structure that was 90% involved in the fire. No other structures were threatened by the fire and the lone occupant of the residence was already out of the blazing structure.
The occupant, a woman in her 60s, was transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation treatment.
According to the Hawaiʻi County Fire Department, the fire possibly began as a smoking related incident.
