Cops bust three criminal gangs in Sg Petani

SUNGAI PETANI: Police dismantled three gangs actively involved in criminal activities including housebreaking, snatch theft, and stealing water meters in an operation held throughout this month in the Kuala Muda district. Kuala Muda district police chief ACP Hanyan Ramlan said in Op Lusuh, three men aged between 30 and 34 years old, were arrested on May 12 after they were believed to have been involved in 45 cases of water meter thefts. "A total of 45 units of copper water meter casings belonging to Syarikat Air Darul Aman (Sada), a plastic bag containing 11.05kg of burnt copper wires as well as a suspect's motorcycle were seized. "Background checks found that all the suspects have prior criminal records and two suspects tested positive for methamphetamine," he said at a press conference at the Kuala Muda district police headquarters (IPD) here Sunday (May 25). It is said that water meters, costing RM120 per piece, are sold to scrap metal dealers for RM15 each, and this gang is believed to have been active for the past six months. "The case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft, and further investigations are still ongoing. Police warn that legal action will be taken against secondhand goods premises that trade in stolen items," he said. Meanwhile, Hanyan said in Op Pintu, also on May 12, police arrested two men aged 30 and 36 years believed to be members of Geng Raji who were active in housebreaking and stealing gas cylinders in residential areas around this district. Police seized burglary tools, a security guard's vest, grinder, water jet, soap barrel, car, and a plastic package containing suspected methamphetamine weighing 0.41g. "Both suspects tested positive for methamphetamine and they also have criminal records related to drugs and crime," he said. In the meantime, through Op Sentap on May 20, two men aged 28 and 29, believed to be active in robbery and snatch theft activities, were also arrested. The arrest of these two members of Geng Emy helped the police solve four snatch theft cases. Their modus operandi was to snatch women's handbags placed in motorcycle baskets. "Checks of past criminal records found that both suspects had records, and both tested positive for methamphetamine. The case is being investigated under Section 394 of the Penal Code for the offence of causing hurt in committing robbery," he added. - Bernama

'Geng Bob' water meter theft syndicate busted in Kedah, suspects arrested

PETALING JAYA: Police successfully crippled a water meter theft syndicate known as 'Geng Bob', which has been active in Kuala Muda, Sungai Petani, for the past six months. Two individuals, ages 30 and 34, were arrested during a recent raid in the district as a result of the operation, which was carried out in cooperation with Kedah state water supply treatment and distribution company, Syarikat Air Darul Aman (Sada), New Straits Times reported. According to Kuala Muda district police chief Assistant Commissioner Hanyan Ramlan, 45, copper water meter casings that were believed to be owned by Sada were confiscated during the raid. Additionally, 11.05kg of burnt copper wires with an approximate worth of RM6,000 and a suspect's car were also seized, he added. 'The losses are not just borne by the victims; the country also suffers as treated water is wasted due to the stolen meter casings,' he said, adding that the suspects tested positive for methamphetamine and had prior drug and criminal records. Hanyan said the 'geng' usually targeted residential areas and operated in early mornings. In a separate raid, a scrap metal dealer who allegedly bought the stolen goods was detained by police. 'Each metre is worth about RM120, but the suspects received only about RM15 per unit when selling them to scrap dealers,' Hanyan said. In order to stop similar thefts, he suggested that people install extra locks on their water meters. The case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code, which deals with theft and carries a maximum sentence of seven years in prison, a fine, or both.

Sada preparing for 30 per cent water demand hike during Lima '25

ALOR STAR: State-owned Syarikat Air Darul Aman Sdn Bhd (Sada) has activated a contingency plan to accommodate a 30 per cent hike in treated water supply demand during the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2025 (Lima '25). Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor said the state government is expecting over 300,000 people, comprising participants and visitors, to be in Langkawi during the May 20 to 24 exhibition period. "Based on the experience in handling water supply issues in Langkawi during the previous Lima edition, Sada has come up with a special contingency plan to meet the drastic surge of demand," he said during a press conference after chairing the state executive council meeting at Wisma Darul Aman here today. In a statement shared by Sanusi, Sada said the water supply in Langkawi is stable, with only 32 accounts requiring water supply delivery, out of 33,623 active accounts in the holiday island. Sada said it has identified four hotspots for the contingency plan, namely Kedawang/Padang Mat Sirat; Datai; Tanjung Rhu/Ayer Hangat; and Kuah. The contingency plan comprises the placement of static tanks, two units of jumbo tankers, nine units of Sada water tankers and increasing the number of smaller lorries to five to transport water. The company has also improved the Sungai Baru Water Treatment Plant's water extraction capacity to maximise the treated water supply to the island. On the submarine pipeline repair works, Sada said it is ramping up Padang Saga Water Treatment Plant's production capacity to meet the target of delivering 45 million litres per day (MLD) to Langkawi. "The repair work to plug 32 leak spots along the 27-year-old submarine pipeline through the clamping method has improved the supply from 37 MLD to 43 MLD, or 93 per cent from the 45 MLD target," it said. Sada said it has also installed pressure relief valves (PRVs) in six locations to prevent pipe bursts during the Lima exhibition.
