Police bust 'Geng Bob' over water meter thefts in Kuala Muda
SUNGAI PETANI: Police have crippled a water meter theft syndicate known as "Geng Bob", which had been active in the Kuala Muda district over the past six months.
The operation, conducted in collaboration with Syarikat Air Darul Aman (Sada), led to the arrest of two men, aged 30 and 34, during a recent raid in the district.
Kuala Muda police chief Assistant Commissioner Hanyan Ramlan said 45 copper water meter casings, believed to belong to the state water concessionaire, were seized.
Also recovered was a black plastic bag containing burnt copper wires weighing 11.05kg, estimated to be worth RM6,000.
A car belonging to one of the suspects was also confiscated.
"The losses are not just borne by the victims; the country also suffers as treated water is wasted due to the stolen meter casings," he told reporters today.
Hanyan said the suspects tested positive for methamphetamine and had previous records involving drugs and other crimes.
He added that they typically took place in the early hours, targeting residential areas.
In a separate raid, police arrested a scrap metal dealer who allegedly purchased the stolen items.
"Each meter is worth about RM120, but the suspects received only about RM15 per unit when selling them to scrap dealers," Hanyan said.
He advised the public to install additional locks on their water meters to prevent similar thefts.
The case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft, which carries a maximum jail term of seven years, a fine, or both.

TAIPING: An oil palm plantation worker escaped the death penalty after the High Court here today sentenced him to seven years' jail on an amended charge of manslaughter involving the death of a detainee at Taiping Prison six years ago. Judge Noor Ruwena Md Nurdin handed down the sentence on Mohd Nizam Shah Shahruddin, 40, after he pleaded guilty to the amended charge under Section 304(b) of the Penal Code for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. According to the judge, testimony revealed that Chua had been beaten by multiple detainees in the remand cell due to his habit of defecating indiscriminately, believed to be caused by diarrhoea. The court also noted uncertainties over whether the accused and others were responsible for the lung injuries that caused the victim's death, citing testimony suggesting the injuries may have resulted from a fall in the prison toilet due to poor lighting. "The accused's statement that he had awakened other inmates to help the deceased after the fall, and had carried the deceased, was not disputed. The affidavit stating that other detainees had also assaulted the victim was similarly unchallenged," said Noor Ruwena. Deputy public prosecutor Sally Chay Mei Ling led the prosecution, while counsel Rajit Singh Tara Singh represented the accused.

Engineer duped of over RM1.5m in online investment scam
GEORGE TOWN: A 40-year-old engineer working in the Middle East has lodged a police report after allegedly losing more than RM1.5 million to an online investment scam. Seberang Prai Tengah district police chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said the man claimed he was cheated in a non-existent investment scheme, resulting in total losses of RM1,532,563. According to Hamzah, the victim's ordeal began in November last year, when he became acquainted with a woman over the phone and later developed a romantic relationship with her. "The suspect then persuaded the victim to join an investment platform called GoldenCrimson, which offered various packages — Junior Room, Intermediate Room, Superior Room, and Supreme Room — with returns depending on the package selected. "The victim was given a customer service number and a website link, to register," he said in a statement today. Hamzah said the victim initially invested RM90,510 and received returns amounting to RM108,611. "Believing the investment was profitable, the victim proceeded to make 103 transactions into 31 different accounts between Dec 2 last year and Mar 8 this year, totalling RM1,532,563. "He realised he had been scammed when he was unable to withdraw the supposed profits of RM4,131,671 via the application. The suspect even asked for additional capital contributions to facilitate the withdrawal," he added. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for fraud. Hamzah urged the public to be cautious and not fall for investment offers not recognised by authorities such as Bank Negara Malaysia, the Securities Commission Malaysia, and the Companies Commission of Malaysia. He advised the public to verify the legitimacy of such schemes with relevant agencies or consult the nearest police station before committing to any investment, especially those offered online.

Man nabbed for drug trafficking in Sibu, meth worth RM12,000 seized

SIBU (June 6): A police operation along Jalan Hua Kiew here on Thursday led to the arrest of a local man for suspected drug trafficking. Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said the 29-year-old suspect was detained around 1.30pm after he was found in possession of 46 plastic packets containing a substance believed to be methamphetamine. 'The drugs had a gross weight of 60.3 grammes and estimated to be worth RM12,060. 'Also seized from the suspect was a sedan car estimated to be worth RM30,000,' he said in a statement today. Zulkipli said the suspect, who tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine, did not have any prior criminal record. The case, he added, is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which provides for the death sentence or life imprisonment, and not less than 15 strokes of the cane if not sentenced to death.
