Repeat offender 'Jack' strikes again, nabbed with 4 others

Zuliaty Zulkiffli KUALA MUDA: A repeat offender who was released from prison just three months ago has been arrested again, this time for allegedly leading a group involved in a spate of break-ins targeting commercial premises and homes across the district. The 30-year-old suspect, known as Jack, has a record of 36 criminal offences and 11 drug-related cases. He is also listed as a wanted person in one ongoing case. Jack and four other members of the so-called 'Geng Jack' were picked up in two separate raids on Wednesday. Kuala Muda police chief Assistant Commissioner Hanyan Ramlan said the suspects, aged between 29 and 52, were involved in a string of break-ins targeting commercial properties and homes in the area. "The group operated by donning uniforms bearing utility company logos to create the impression they were on duty in the area, when in fact they were committing criminal break-ins at night or in the early morning," he said at a press conference at the Kuala Muda police headquarters today. Following the arrests, police managed to solve 15 cases, including office burglaries, a break-in at a kindergarten, a Japanese restaurant, and several swiftlet farms in Kedah and Penang. Hanyan said the group had even dismantled a safe containing cash at the kindergarten and attempted to sell it to a scrap metal outlet. "The group is believed to target premises with high potential for lucrative returns. They used various burglary tools such as crowbars, screwdrivers, grinders, small saws, and chisels to force entry," he said. During the raids, police seized a Proton Persona believed to belong to the main suspect, four packets of crystal-like substances suspected to be methamphetamines (weighing approximately 1.82g), two backpacks, two wallets, six watches, and a gold necklace. Also confiscated were a handbag, RM833 in cash, foreign currency amounting to RM1,455, four baseball caps, a purse, coins, various keys, five mobile phones, a laptop, and several utility company-branded shirts. The total value of the seized items is estimated at nearly RM40,000. The case is being investigated under Section 457 of the Penal Code for housebreaking. The offence carries a maximum penalty of five years' imprisonment and a fine. Hanyan added that all five suspects have prior records for criminal and drug-related offences. They are currently under remand and tested positive for methamphetamine.

Teen girl survives after being pinned under Proton Exora

SUNGAI PETANI: A Form Five student miraculously survived after she was pinned underneath a Proton Exora following a crash between her motorcycle and the multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) at Jalan Permatang Kelompang, Kota Kuala Muda, yesterday. Kuala Muda police chief Assistant Commissioner Hanyan Ramlan said the 6.40pm incident occurred when the SMK Kota Kuala Muda student was riding home on a Yamaha 135LC motorcycle with her schoolmate, who is also in Form Five. "Based on the initial investigation, the 71-year-old Proton Exora driver was crossing the road when the motorcycle collided with the front side of the MPV. "The motorcyclist sustained injuries to her face, arms and left leg, while her pillion rider suffered injuries to her face, body and arms. "Both are receiving treatment in the Yellow Zone of Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital," he said in a statement. Hanyan said investigations revealed that the crash was caused by the driver's negligence. A video showing villagers scrambling to lift the MPV — with the help of a backhoe — went viral on social media platforms today. In the over three-minute video, a man is heard updating a 999 emergency hotline responder from the scene. The backhoe eventually managed to lift the MPV, allowing villagers to pull the girl to safety. After briefly lying on the ground, the girl was seen getting up and walking over to her pillion rider. The girls were first rushed to a clinic before being transferred to the hospital.

Police hunt elderly woman behind investment scam

SUNGAI PETANI: Police are searching for a 60-year-old woman to assist in investigations into an alleged investment scam that has resulted in losses exceeding RM600,000 since 2017. Kuala Muda district police chief Assistant Commissioner Hanyan Ramlan said police had received seven reports from individuals claiming they were duped into investing through the woman. "The victims were promised returns of between five and seven per cent on their capital. "Losses linked to the scheme have reached RM604,000 so far, based on reports from victims who believed they were participating in a legitimate investment," he said during a press conference today. Initial investigations revealed that the so-called investment scheme never existed. "Unsatisfied with the lack of returns, the victims lodged police reports. "We are now working to trace the woman, who is believed to be connected to the case. "We urge anyone with information on her whereabouts to come forward and assist in the investigation," he said. It is understood that the victims had repeatedly attempted to recover their money from the woman but were met with constant delays. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of 10 years, whipping, and a fine upon conviction. In a separate development, Hanyan announced the formation of a special unit under the Kuala Muda district police headquarters known as the 'All Black Militant Jihad Against Drugs' team. He said the 25-member squad, comprising officers and personnel from various units, would operate in public areas and shopping complexes to gather intelligence on drug-related activities. "The public may channel any information to this team, and swift action will be taken," he said. Hanyan said the special squad aims to tackle drug activities at their root across the Kuala Muda district.

Cops bust three criminal gangs in Sungai Petani

SUNGAI PETANI: Police dismantled three gangs actively involved in criminal actiities including housebreaking, snatch theft, and stealing water meters in an operation held throughout this month in the Kuala Muda district. Kuala Muda district police chief ACP Hanyan Ramlan said in Op Lusuh, three men aged between 30 and 34 years old, were arrested on May 12 after they were believed to have been involved in 45 cases of water meter thefts. 'A total of 45 units of copper water meter casings belonging to Syarikat Air Darul Aman (SADA), a plastic bag containing 11.05 kilogrammes of burnt copper wires as well as a suspect's motorcycle were seized. 'Background checks found that all the suspects have prior criminal records and two suspects tested positive for methamphetamine,' he said at a press conference at the Kuala Muda district police headquarters (IPD) here today. It is said that water meters, costing RM120 per piece, are sold to scrap metal dealers for RM15 each, and this gang is believed to have been active for the past six months. 'The case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft, and further investigations are still ongoing. Police warn that legal action will be taken against secondhand goods premises that trade in stolen items,' he said. Meanwhile, Hanyan said in Op Pintu, also on May 12, police arrested two men aged 30 and 36 years believed to be members of Geng Raji who were active in housebreaking and stealing gas cylinders in residential areas around this district. Police seized burglary tools, a security guard's vest, grinder, water jet, soap barrel, car, and a plastic package containing suspected methamphetamine weighing 0.41 grammes. 'Both suspects tested positive for methamphetamine and they also have criminal records related to drugs and crime,' he said. In the meantime, through Op Sentap on May 20, two men aged 28 and 29, believed to be active in robbery and snatch theft activities, were also arrested. The arrest of these two members of Geng Emy helped the police solve four snatch theft cases. Their modus operandi was to snatch women's handbags placed in motorcycle baskets. 'Checks of past criminal records found that both suspects had records, and both tested positive for methamphetamine. The case is being investigated under Section 394 of the Penal Code for the offence of causing hurt in committing robbery,' he added.
