Kerala high court seeks KSRTC's response on bus service disruption at Sabarimala
Kochi: High court has sought instructions from Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) regarding a report filed by the Sabarimala special commissioner which stated that chain services between Nilakkal and Pamba were halted without prior notice on April 16, during the annual holy festival and 'Meda Masa Puja. 'According to the report, the services were suspended at 7pm on April 16 without informing higher authorities, the police coordinator or the special commissioner, allegedly due to a diesel shortage at the Nilakkal petrol pump. While considering the report on Tuesday, a bench of Justices Anil K Narendran and M B Snehalatha directed KSRTC's counsel to get instructions regarding the alleged incident. The matter has been adjourned to May 20 for further report also highlighted that the disruption in the chain service of buses seriously affected devotees. It requested HC to issue directions to the concerned authorities to ensure that higher officials are informed promptly in such situations and that sufficient fuel is maintained at the devaswom board-owned petrol bunks at Nilakkal and Pamba to prevent the recurrence of such incidents. Referring to an accident at Kanamala on April 16, which led to the death of one devotee and injuries to 27 others, the special commissioner recommended the deployment of one or two teams from the Safe Zone initiative during monthly pujas, citing the increasing flow of vehicles and addition, the court was informed that 13 devotees who had consumed food from Stall No 88 (Coffee Land Hotel at Pamba) were admitted to a govt hospital on suspicion of food poisoning. A temporary closure notice was issued to the hotel on April 12, and it reopened the following day after an inspection by the special squad. The special commissioner also refuted reports that currency notes were destroyed in a fire at Sabarimala, stating that the allegation was false and appeared to have been fabricated by certain staff members with ulterior motives. Meanwhile, it was observed that 14 sacks of damaged currency notes, along with a large quantity of foreign coins, lamps and bells were found dumped in the old and new bhandarams (temple treasuries). Finally, the report noted deviations in the moisture content of Appam and Aravana as observed in recent test reports. This was attributed to a mechanical defect in the boiler. Urgent maintenance was recommended, and the executive officer was directed to ensure that moisture levels remain within permissible limits.

University of Arkansas Police Department ready in event of active shooter situation
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — The University of Arkansas Police Department is reaffirming how it would respond to an active shooter on campus in the wake of Thursday's mass shooting at Florida State University that killed two people and wounded six others. UAPD assistant chief Matt Mills said it's a collaborative effort between campus police, Fayetteville Police Department, Washington County Sheriff's Office, fire and EMS agencies, to locate the shooter, neutralize the threat and begin administering aid to the wounded. Mills said, for students, keep 'Avoid, Deny and Defend' in mind. 'If you can get out, get out as quickly as you can and take as many people with as possible,' Mills said. 'If you cannot get out, turn off the lights, lock the doors, barricade the doors, deny access, and while you're doing that, we create a plan to defend ourselves if the bad guy comes in.' 2 dead, 9 injured in Conway shooting The shooting in Tallahassee affected University of Arkansas students, like freshman Dylan White. 'It was heartbreaking,' White said. White said he and his roommate discussed the shooting together, concluding that they couldn't imagine an incident like that happening on Arkansas' campus. However, White understands that an incident like that could happen anywhere at any time. 'It makes you look at situations different,' White said. 'When you're just going to class, it's like, 'Dang, I feel like that couldn't happen here,' but I'm sure those guys at FSU felt the same way.' White was more alert walking around campus and sitting in class Friday — exactly what UAPD wants students, faculty and staff to do. Mills said, for every room they walk into, they should identify a primary and secondary exit. 'That may be through a window,' Mills said. 'If you have to get out, break the window. We'll replace a window, especially in an active-shooter, active-threat environment.' UAFS to launch one-time Summer scholarship initiative That goes hand-in-hand with reporting anything that seems out of the ordinary to police immediately, Mills said. Mills is also encouraging every student, faculty and staff member with a university email to download the free SafeZone app. Mills said you can hit a button on the app indicating there's an emergency, and your location will be displayed for dispatchers and police to respond. If you're unable to talk for safety reasons, Mills said you can send the department text messages and photos through the SafeZone app, which can help UAPD locate and subdue the active threat. 'We would have to search every one of those buildings, every room, every floor, if we don't know where the shooter is,' Mills said. 'If we get that information from people that are on the ground or they just said, 'I just heard them outside of this room,' now we can narrow our scope and get to that threat sooner.' RazALERTs are sent out across campus to students, faculty and staff in the event of emergency or inclement weather situations. For more information, you can visit UAPD's website. Icy roads lead to crashes, school closings in Texas Panhandle Wednesday
This story has been updated with additional information. Several school districts in the Texas Panhandle were closed Wednesday due to icy road conditions, and authorities were warning people to stay off the roads after responding to numerous accidents due to hazardous travel. Amarillo College (AC) said its Hereford campus is closing at 1 p.m. Wednesday due to weather. AC said its Amarillo campuses will continue to observe standard operating hours at this time. In addition, West Texas A&M University (WT) in Canyon and the Harrington Academic Hall in Amarillo will be closing at 2 p.m. Wednesday, and students should check with faculty regarding course alternatives. WT said campus status for Thursday, Feb. 13 will be communicated by 6 a.m.; further updates will be shared via email, the WT home page, WT social media and the Safe Zone app and texts. "Due to the icy road conditions, DPS is responding to multiple vehicle crashes across the district, most of which have occurred on I-40 in every county," Sgt. Cindy Barkley with the Texas Department of Public Safety said in a 9:30 a.m. update, advising people to stay home if possible. Those who must travel are urged to take it slow and allow plenty of room between them and the vehicle in front of theirs. "Don't use your cruise control or brake suddenly. Be patient and give yourself ample time to get where you are going. Drive safely. Drive smart." The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Amarillo office reported that in Hartley County, both directions of US 54, just west of FM 767 to the New Mexico state line, were closed around 10 a.m. Wednesday due to multiple semi-truck crashes, and crews were working to clear the scene. Travelers were asked to avoid the area. A Winter Weather Advisory for most of the region remains in effect until noon, with mixed precipitation including possibly additional snow accumulations up to a half inch for the northern Texas Panhandle and the entire Oklahoma Panhandle, as well as additional ice accumulations from a trace up to a few hundredths of an inch. The National Weather Service Amarillo said in an update posted on Facebook that "Freezing drizzle continues this morning across the combined Panhandles, and temperatures continue to drop. This will make ice build up even easier on untreated roads, especially on bridges!" In addition to the slick roads Wednesday morning, NWS Amarillo noted that cold temperatures and wind chills were a concern, with highs expected in the 20s to low 30s. The map showed multiple roadways in the region impacted by patches of ice and snow. School districts were either closed or in the process of cancelling classes Wednesday due to the deteroriating weather conditions. Those who were closed include: Amarillo College campus in Dumas Booker ISD Dalhart ISD Darrouzett ISD Dumas ISD Follett ISD Fort Elliott CISD - "Students picked up on buses will be delivered home." Gruver ISD Hartley ISD Highland Park ISD Plemons-Stinnett-Phillips ISD Pringle-Morse CISD Shamrock ISD Spearman ISD Sunray ISD Wellington ISD Other schools were running on two-hour delays. The Student Council Conference in Amarillo at the Civic Center was cancelled due to icy travel conditions. This is a developing story; more information will be added as it becomes available.
