22 Maoists killed in MAJOR operation at Karregutta hills on Telangana-Chhattisgarh Border

Bijapur Naxalite encounter: Security forces have killed a total of 22 Maoists in what is the largest operation this year against left-wing extremists in the Karregutta hills, located along the Telangana-Chhattisgarh border. The offensive, launched on 21 April from Bijapur district in Chhattisgarh, involves approximately 20,000 personnel and is being led by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in conjunction with units of the Chhattisgarh Police. The operation has now entered its 18th day, with over a dozen security personnel-including members of the CRPF's CoBRA unit and Chhattisgarh Police's District Reserve Guard (DRG) and Special Task Force (STF)-sustaining injuries. Among those wounded is Assistant Commandant Sagar Borade of CoBRA, who tragically lost a leg in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast two days ago. Another commando from CoBRA's 206th battalion was severely injured in a similar blast on Wednesday. Despite these setbacks, the security forces continue their determined campaign against the insurgents. The importance of the operation can be gauged from the fact that CRPF director general (DG) G P Singh is camping continuously in the state, at Raipur and some times at Jagdalpur, since April 19 and has visited the operations area including the Karregutta hills thrice till now, officials said. Everyday, the CRPF and state police heads meet twice at the police headquarters in Raipur to review the operation, rotate the troops and ensure that supply lines of food, water and ammunition are replenished, they said. Officials said the Karregutta hills area has been "an untouched territory till now and it was a testimony of the forces strength that there have been no casualties on their side despite the heavily mined area, hot weather and harsh terrain". "The coordination between the CRPF and Chhattisgarh Police is going great and that is why the forces were able to capture the hill and hold the area till they neutralise or apprehend the last Maoist on ground there," a senior officer said. The joint forces have recovered and defused about 135 IEDs till now, officials said, adding a "final offensive" has been launched. The CRPF, this week, inducted as many as 20 new companies comprising about 2,000 personnel for the operation. The security forces are now "holding the heavily mined hill areas which has multiple bunker-like hideouts," according to officials. Some senior Naxal cadres are suspected to be holed up in the hill area. The operation will reach its logical conclusion soon, a senior officer supervising the operation had told PTI on Tuesday. About four helicopters, two drone squadrons comprising 20 big and small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in each, along with satellite imagery and maps provided by the NTRO, have been deployed to track Hidma, the top commander of the PLGA battalion no 1, and other senior cadres like Deva, officials have said. Inputs suggested that Hidma was seen around a bunker built in the Karregutta Hills along with an armed squad, and the operation was launched on this information.

At least 15 Maoists killed as decisive op targeting top leadership enters third week

More than 15 Maoists have been killed in the Karegutta hills on the Chhattisgarh-Telangana border in a major operation by a joint team of security forces, officials said Wednesday. This takes the total number of Maoists killed since the start of the operation more than two weeks ago to 19. According to officials, the number is expected to go up further and search operations are continuing. 'More than 15 Maoists have been killed. All security forces are safe and fully committed to ensuring a safe and secure Bastar region. Search operations are on,' said an official. On Monday, a body of a Maoist cadre was recovered with a .303 rifle. In a related development, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Assistant Commandant Sagar Borade, 32, who suffered serious injuries on his left-leg in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast on Sunday morning underwent a surgery in AIIMS Delhi on Monday, where the leg was medically amputated to prevent spread of infection. A CRPF official confirmed to The Indian Express that Borade on Sunday morning was leading a team to evacuate another jawan who had suffered injuries in an IED blast. 'Borade was leading the evacuation team from the front when he inadvertently stepped on an IED hidden in the ground which caused grievous injuries to his leg,' said the official. The operation, Mission Sankalp, began on April 21 and involves the mobilisation of 24,000 troops, including those from the Indian Air Force, to the inter-state border. It is still underway. So far, over 250 IEDs in and around the hills have been found by the forces. The forces had earlier said key Maoist leaders are holed up in the hills, safeguarded by their strongest military formation, Battalion 1 of the People's Liberation Guerrilla Army, the armed unit of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist). In a statement on Tuesday, the Chhattisgarh police said, 'Based on certain facts and our knowledge so far, senior Maoist leaders have either been killed or suffered injuries in the encounter. However, due to difficult geographical conditions, the security forces have not been able to recover the bodies of all the injured or killed Naxalites.' Inspector General of Police for Bastar Range, Sundarraj P, said, 'Despite difficult geographical conditions and numerous challenges, the security forces are carrying forward this decisive operation against Left Wing Extremism with full commitment and determination. Many hideouts and bunkers have been destroyed.' 'Thousands of kilogrammes of explosive material/ration material/medicines, items of daily use and detonators were recovered from Naxal hideouts and bunkers,' he said. The 24,000-strong troops comprise jawans from central and state forces — District Reserve Guard (DRG), Special Task Force (STF), Bastar Fighters, Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA), an elite unit of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and CRPF jawans. This year, 129 Maoists have been gunned down in the Bastar region, while 146 Maoists have been killed in Chhattisgarh overall. A total of 219 Maoists were killed last year in the state, including 217 in Bastar.

CRPF Officer, 5 Others Injured In Largest Anti-Naxal Operation, 112 IEDs Recovered So Far

Last Updated: Forces suspect several top Naxal leaders are trapped in the Chhattisgarh-Telangana border area, although some may have managed to flee towards the Telangana side. In one of the longest and largest anti-Naxal operations, a CRPF officer along with four others and two personnel from the STF have been injured. According to the CRPF, Assistant Commandant Sagar Borade was injured during the anti-Naxal operation in the Chhattisgarh-Telangana border area on May 4. The CRPF also reported that a total of 112 IEDs have been recovered from the area, which is considered the last remaining stronghold of Naxal dominance. Forces suspect that several top Naxal leaders are trapped in the area, although some may have managed to flee towards the Telangana side. 'During one of the most high-risk anti-Naxal operations underway in the KGH Hills along the Chhattisgarh–Telangana border, CRPF Assistant Commandant Sagar Borade sustained serious injuries. This operation, led by the elite 204 CoBRA Battalion of the CRPF, saw a jawan injured in an IED blast. Assistant Commandant Borade, who was leading the team, stepped up to evacuate the injured jawan without any regard for his own safety. The KGH Hills are believed to be a hideout for several most-wanted Naxal leaders, and the area is densely forested and heavily laden with deadly IEDs," a CRPF official said. Prioritising the safety of his team and displaying exceptional bravery, Borade accidentally stepped on an IED during the evacuation effort, causing severe damage to his left leg. He was immediately moved to Raipur and later airlifted to AIIMS Delhi, where his leg had to be medically amputated to prevent the spread of infection. The operation is considered so critical that CRPF DG GP Singh is currently stationed in Chhattisgarh, personally supervising the operation on the ground. First Published: May 06, 2025, 13:05 IST
