Getting tested for HIV, syphilis first step towards motherhood: Saran civil surgeon
Chhapra: Saran civil surgeon (CS) Dr Sagar Dulal Sinha has said that getting tested for HIV and syphilis is the first step in accepting the responsibility of motherhood for any pregnant woman. Making this appeal to the newly wed couple, the CS on Monday said that the symptoms of the two diseases may not be visible in the beginning, and if remained undetected, the infection may pass on to the child creating serious health problems, even death. "Pregnant women must come forward for the HIV test without any fear or hesitation. In case, the blood sample confirms the presence of HIV or syphilis beforehand, the foetus could be saved from adverse effects. The facilities for these tests are available in all govt health centres free of cost, the CS said, adding Ashas, ANMs and other health workers have been creating awareness about these tests in different villages. The CS suggested to get these tests for marriage to be on a safe side. The CS said that unsafe sex, use of infected syringe or needle, and infected blood transfusion are some of the possible reasons for the infection of HIV or syphilis.

Saran schools join tobacco awareness drive
Chhapra: The health department has launched an awareness campaign in schools in various blocks to educate students and teachers about the harmful effects of tobacco use. The initiative will culminate on May 31, observed as 'World No Tobacco Day'. As part of the campaign, expert speakers have been informing students and teachers about the range of diseases and psychological issues linked to tobacco consumption. They have also outlined practical methods to help individuals avoid or quit the habit. At one such programme held at the health and wellness centre in Shiltalpur Dih Basti Jalal under Dighwara block, speakers stressed the importance of referring chronic users to the District Tobacco Control Committee (DTCC) for proper counselling and treatment. Expressing concern over the rising number of tobacco users, Saran civil surgeon Dr Sagar Dulal Sinha said, "This can be controlled only through proper awareness, counselling and self-commitment." Non-communicable disease officer Dr Bhupendra Kumar, speaking at the Basti Jalal session, warned of the serious health risks associated with tobacco use. "There is a growing threat of oral, lung and abdominal cancers due to tobacco," he said.

Hosps introduce QR code system to track medicine availability
Chhapra: The health department has launched a digital initiative in Saran district to ensure transparency and reduce patient inconvenience in govt hospitals. From now on, patients visiting any govt health facility, from primary health centres to sub-divisional and district hospitals, will be able to check the availability of medicines by scanning a QR QR code system is integrated with the Centre's Drugs and Vaccine Distribution Management System (DVDMS) portal, allowing real-time updates on stock levels. The move is intended to prevent patients from being misled about the availability of medicines by any vested the challenges faced by patients in the past, Saran civil surgeon Dr Sagar Dulal Sinha said, "Patients visiting govt hospitals were often harassed under the pretext of certain medicines being unavailable. Although a system for medicine distribution was already in place, patients, especially those travelling from distant areas,, frequently faced difficulties and were forced to purchase medicines from the market.""With the introduction of the new system, the patients would feel relief and would be able to save time and money," he to instructions issued by the health department, scanning the QR code will immediately display a list of medicines on the patient's cellphone. Medicines that are in stock will be shown in green while those unavailable will appear in Kumar, district programme manager (DPM) of the District Health Society, expressed optimism about the new service. "We hope that the digital services will provide transparency in health services," he said.

Saran third in Bihar in anemia-free ranking
Chhapra: Saran district has secured the 3rd place in the state in anaemia-free ranking. Saran civil surgeon, Sagar Dulal Sinha, said on the basis of recorded data on the HMIS ( Health Management Information System ) Portal, the performance of Saran district in 2024-25 was satisfactory with a 93.2% score, which provided 3rd place to this civil surgeon hoped that their target will be to get first place in the next evaluation. It is known that under this programme, different age group beneficiaries are given syrup of iron-folic acid, pink and blue tablets. "This programme is an ambitious health initiative of the central govt aimed at removing anaemia-related symptoms," he Kumar Singh, DDM (District Data Manager) of the district health society, said that their attempt was to provide health facilities and nutrition to each of the citizens of the district.
