Fivetran expands SDK to simplify building custom data connectors
Fivetran has expanded its Connector SDK to enable custom connectors for any data source. The update allows developers to build pipelines connecting even unique or internally developed systems, facilitating the centralisation of company data for analytics, artificial intelligence, and business decision-making. With the Connector SDK, data teams now have the ability to build secure, reliable pipelines for a range of sources—from various applications and internal APIs to legacy systems. Developers write integration logic in Python, while Fivetran manages infrastructure elements such as deployment, orchestration, scaling, monitoring, and error handling. The process is designed to allow most connectors to be built and deployed within several hours, removing the need for DevOps support or dedicated infrastructure development. Anjan Kundavaram, Chief Product Officer at Fivetran, discussed the approach companies often take when a prebuilt connector is unavailable. He stated: "When there isn't a prebuilt connector, most teams end up building and maintaining custom pipelines themselves. That DIY approach may seem flexible at first, but it often becomes a long-term burden with hidden costs in reliability, security, and maintenance. The Connector SDK changes that. Now, any engineer can build a custom connector for any source and run it with the same infrastructure, performance, and reliability as Fivetran's native connectors. It gives companies the flexibility they need without the tradeoffs." The SDK offers the same infrastructure that supports Fivetran's managed connectors, handling automatic retries, monitoring, and alerting to ensure the accurate delivery of data to destinations such as BigQuery, Databricks, Snowflake, and other platforms. Babacar Seck, Head of Data Integration at Saint-Gobain, shared his perspective on their experience with the Connector SDK. He said: "The SDK was a huge surprise in the best way. We expected to keep using Azure Data Factory for APIs because it was the only option. But once we saw what we could do with Fivetran's Connector SDK, everything changed. We can now build custom connectors in-house and respond to business needs much faster — all while seamlessly delivering data into Snowflake on Azure." The company noted that the Connector SDK is being demonstrated to the public, with a focus on allowing data engineers to build custom connectors for moving data into cloud destinations tailored for analytics and artificial intelligence workloads. Fivetran is known for working with organisations across various industries, enabling them to centralise data from software-as-a-service applications, databases, files, and additional sources into cloud destinations such as data lakes. The company's approach emphasises high-performance pipelines, security, and interoperability to help organisations enhance or modernise their data infrastructure.

Three Belgian firms to visit Lumut Maritime Industrial City in June
BATU GAJAH: Three Belgian investment companies are scheduled to visit the Lumut Maritime Industrial City (LuMIC) this June, following the Perak government's official visit to Europe last week. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said the companies are Belgian Scrap Terminal (BST), Soenen Group Green Vessel Recycling, and Steinberg Logistics International. 'BST specialises in separating recyclable materials and has expertise in dismantling and recycling old ships. 'Soenen focuses on sustainable ship disposal and refurbishment, while Steinberg offers integrated logistics services that support the maritime industry ecosystem,' he told a press conference after the State Government's Customer Engagement Day (Series 3/2025) here today. Saarani added that French multinational company Saint-Gobain, which operates in the Kanthan Industrial Park, Chemor, has also expressed interest in expanding its operations. He said the company plans to invest an additional RM200 million, and the Perak State Development Corporation (PKNP) has proposed relocating its operations to the Silver Valley Technology Park (SVTP). 'Saint-Gobain has visited SVTP to evaluate its suitability for the new investment,' he said. On a separate matter, Saarani addressed public complaints about livestock roaming on roads, which pose safety risks to motorists. He urged farmers to use designated grazing areas to help resolve the issue. 'The presence of roaming animals not only disrupts farming activities but also endangers road users. 'These animals often enter fenced farmland and have become a source of frequent complaints from residents,' he said. He added that cattle and buffaloes, usually raised by small-scale farmers without proper enclosures, often wander onto roads and farmland, which has become a serious concern.

Perak aims to reduce human-wildlife conflicts
IPOH: Perak looks forward to resolving the increasing number of human-wildlife conflicts in the state with the help of the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan), says Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad. The Mentri Besar said several incidents, particularly those involving elephants crossing the East-West Highway, have been reported, with recent observations suggesting changes in elephant behaviour. 'We have seen elephants crossing, especially in large groups, so something must be prompting this. 'We need to study their behaviour more closely to understand what is going on,' he told reporters after attending the Northern Corridor Economic Region Ramah Mesra event, here yesterday. Saarani said Perhilitan, with its expertise in wildlife management, will take the lead in investigating the cause and proposing appropriate measures. He cited a past incident during the development of the Agropolitan Gandah project, where elephants frequently disturbed newly planted rubber trees. 'Eventually, we allocated a specific area just for the elephants to feed and roam. Once they had that space, they no longer came into conflict with the plantation. 'That experience taught us the importance of understanding and adapting to wildlife behaviour,' he said. Saarani said it is important to investigate whether elephants were crossing the Gerik-Jeli stretch more often after the recent accident involving a baby elephant. 'I want to remind road users, especially in known wildlife corridors, to be extra cautious. These are traditional elephant routes. 'I have tasked state executive councillor Teh Kok Lim to initiate talks with Perhilitan to identify the cause and effective solutions. 'We are looking into the matter, especially now that the elephants are crossing roads in larger groups,' he added. On May 11, a five-year-old elephant was killed after it was struck by a lorry along KM80 of the highway. An adult elephant, believed to be the mother, then attacked the lorry, damaging the front of the vehicle, in its attempt to free the calf pinned by the vehicle. On May 20, a herd of wild elephants damaged a car that had a 39-year-old man inside at KM11 on the same highway. On another matter, Saarani said Perak has secured RM450mil in confirmed foreign investments, following a recent working trip to Europe. He said the delegation visited France, Belgium and Britain, engaging with industry players in construction, chemicals, aquaculture and automotive testing. In France, the team visited Saint-Gobain, which plans to invest an additional RM2mil in its Kanthan plant here, and in Belgium, Lhoist committed RM250mil to expand its quarry operations in Tapah. Three potential investors were also identified for the Lumut Maritime Industrial City (LuMIC), including firms in ship recycling and logistics, expected to visit in June. The state also plans to collaborate on a shrimp farming project using artemia feed, through the Perak State Agriculture Development Corporation. 'In Britain, the team studied the National Automotive Testing Centre in Leicester, with plans to establish a similar research and development driven track in Sungkai,' he added.
