Rajasthan man held on espionage charges; was providing vital information about military establishments to Pakistan, say police

The Special Cell on Thursday arrested a 34-year-old Rajasthan-based man based on espionage charges. The accused has been identified as Kasim, who goes by only one name. A resident of Deeg, he was in touch with ISI officers and had also undergone training in Pakistan last year for a month, said an officer on condition of anonymity. Police officers said Kasim was working in the guise of a maulana while simultaneously providing vital information about military establishments to Pakistan. He was also in touch with a few people in Pakistan through different social media platforms, they added. Sources say during operation 'Sindoor', he had spoken to a few numbers in Pakistan. 'It was also found that Kasim had visited Pakistan twice, in August 2024 and March 2025. He stayed there for about 90 days and also met ISI persons,' said the officer quoted above. By using Indian SIMs, Pak Intelligence Operatives (PIOs), through WhatsApp, were communicating with Indians to extract information on sensitive installations related to the Army and other Government offices, said officers. A case was registered under the appropriate sections of law, and Kasim was placed in police remand. 'He was befriending officers and extracting crucial information, which was being passed on. We have sufficient evidence, based on which he was arrested. More arrests are likely to be made in the coming days,' sources said. Following the Pahalgam attack, investigative and law enforcement agencies have been on alert in the area, keeping a close watch on suspicious elements. Delhi Police officials said that in September 2024, a source input was received that Indian mobile numbers were being used by PIOs for espionage activities in India. It was suspected that these SIM cards were being sent to Pakistan by some Indians; the name of Kasim cropped up during this investigation, said officers. Further investigation is going on to unearth the conspiracy of espionage by PIOs and their Indian associates, they added. Sakshi Chand is working as an Assistant Editor with the Indian Express. Woman killed in UK: Husband on run denied bail by Delhi court

Eight months after a 24-year-old Delhi woman was murdered in East London, a Delhi court on Wednesday denied pre-arrest bail to her husband, who is absconding. Additional Sessions Judge Vinod Kumar Meena of Dwarka court denied the man anticipartory bail after hearing arguments for an hour. The man, accused of murdering his wife, was purportedly last spotted withdrawing money from a bank in Gurgaon on March 4. He has been on the run since last November, when his wife's body was found in the boot of his car in East London. A postmortem report had listed strangulation as the preliminary cause of death. The Delhi Police had earlier issued a Look Out Circular against him, after he was suspected to have arrived in the Capital. It had subsequently declared him a Proclaimed Offender on May 1. According to the latest status report filed before the Delhi High Court by the Station House Officer of Palam Village police station, details of two banks – collected by the police on April 4 – from where the accused withdrew money were mentioned. Further, it said the husband's cellphone was recovered from an autorickshaw driver on March 22. The HC, in an earlier hearing, had asked the police to file an updated status report outlining the steps they have taken to arrest the accused. The parents of the man were arrested in connection with the murder on March 14. While the mother is currently out on bail, the father is still behind bars. The police, meanwhile, has announced a Rs 50,000 reward for any information leading to the man's arrest. Sakshi Chand is working as an Assistant Editor with the Indian Express. Delhi Police cracks whip on its own over corruption; 5 arrested

Accepting a bribe to allow construction work at the residence of a retired police officer, settling a cheating case, and letting a meat shop operate — these are some of the crimes for which the Delhi Police has arrested five of its own personnel in the first four-and-a-half months of 2025. Four of these arrests were made in April alone. The arrests have been made under the Prevention of Corruption Act. Last year, the number of such arrests was 8. One case pertains to a Sub-Inspector (SI). On May 13, on the directions of the Delhi High Court, the SI from North Avenue police station was arrested after it came to light that he had allegedly demanded a bribe from an accused booked in a brawl case, offering to help him procure bail. The brawl was between two groups at RML Hospital and cross FIRs were lodged at North Avenue police station. On May 7, the HC heard the anticipatory bail plea of one of the accused, a proclaimed offender, said police. During the hearing, his counsel told the court that the investigating officer, the SI — who was in court — was blackmailing his client's relatives and demanding a bribe to help the accused get anticipatory bail. As evidence, the counsel produced 11 printouts of screenshots of chats between the SI and the accused's sister-in-law. The SI admitted in court that the printouts reflected his cellphone number. Police said some of the printouts were of a screenshot of a Paytm transaction of money transferred to a person as directed by the SI. Following this, the HC directed that appropriate action be taken against the SI in accordance with the law, and he was arrested. In another incident, police said a head constable was arrested on April 15 for allowing a meat shop to operate in Paschim Vihar West by allegedly accepting a Rs 1 lakh bribe. On April 14, an ASI was arrested on April 14 for allegedly demanding Rs 2 lakh for allowing construction work at the residence of a retired police personnel, police said. When contacted, Additional CP Aslam Khan said, 'The Delhi Police has a zero-tolerance policy towards corruption. Apart from the multiple channels we have for people to approach us, we also hold public hearings so people can share their grievances.' Officials in the Vigilance branch said they receive around 80-100 complaints a day via WhatsApp, and helpline numbers. 'We receive written complaints… people also walk in to file complaints… Sometimes, we receive tip-offs on phones, after which flying squads swing into action. Not all complaints are converted into FIRs because some don't have the required evidence… some don't meet the criteria to be investigated by the Vigilance Branch and are transferred to the district police,' said an officer.
