Woman killed in UK: Husband on run denied bail by Delhi court

Indian Express21-05-2025

Eight months after a 24-year-old Delhi woman was murdered in East London, a Delhi court on Wednesday denied pre-arrest bail to her husband, who is absconding.
Additional Sessions Judge Vinod Kumar Meena of Dwarka court denied the man anticipartory bail after hearing arguments for an hour.
The man, accused of murdering his wife, was purportedly last spotted withdrawing money from a bank in Gurgaon on March 4. He has been on the run since last November, when his wife's body was found in the boot of his car in East London. A postmortem report had listed strangulation as the preliminary cause of death.
The Delhi Police had earlier issued a Look Out Circular against him, after he was suspected to have arrived in the Capital. It had subsequently declared him a Proclaimed Offender on May 1.
According to the latest status report filed before the Delhi High Court by the Station House Officer of Palam Village police station, details of two banks – collected by the police on April 4 – from where the accused withdrew money were mentioned. Further, it said the husband's cellphone was recovered from an autorickshaw driver on March 22.
The HC, in an earlier hearing, had asked the police to file an updated status report outlining the steps they have taken to arrest the accused.
The parents of the man were arrested in connection with the murder on March 14. While the mother is currently out on bail, the father is still behind bars. The police, meanwhile, has announced a Rs 50,000 reward for any information leading to the man's arrest.

Masked gang waylays Kerala jeweller on Coimbatore highway, robs him of 1.25 kg of gold bars

COIMBATORE: In a daring daylight robbery, a five-member masked gang robbed 1.25 kilogram of gold bars along with cash by waylaying a Thrissur-based jeweller at Ettimadai on the national highway stretch in Coimbatore on Saturday morning. The gangsters targeted J Jaison Jacob (55) of Palakkal village in Thrissur district where he owns a jewellery shop along with a goldsmithery unit, said the KG Chavadi police in Coimbatore. Jaison and his employee S Vishnu (20) were returning to his native place in Jaison's car from the Coimbatore railway station when the incident occurred. Earlier, they had arrived in the city by train from Chennai after buying gold bars weighing 1.25 kg from a few shops in Chennai. While the duo reached near a petroleum bunk on the Palakkad-bound national highway, a lorry waylaid the car. Subsequently, the five-member gang who were hiding nearby asked Jaison to open the door. When he resisted, one of the gang members damaged the car window using an iron rod. Fearing an attack, Jaison opened the door, and subsequently the gang got into the car. "The gang also shifted Jaison, who was driving the car, to the backseat, and one of the members drove the car on the same highway. After spraying pepper spray, the gang stole the gold bars which were kept under the seat at knifepoint, and left Jaison and Vishnu on the roadside. Subsequently, the gang travelled in the same car towards the Velanthavalam route on another route," said a police officer of the KG Chavadi police station. After help from fellow motorists, Jaison filed a complaint at the KG Chavadi police station. Coimbatore SP K Karthikeyan visited the spot. "As the gang spoke in Malayalam, we suspect the suspects were from Kerala. The gang travelled for two kilometres after taking the car at 6.45am and assaulting Jaison and Vishnu. The gang also took Rs 60,000 cash that Jaison had kept in the car. We will arrest them soon by deploying a special team," the SP said. We are coordinating with the Kerala Police to nab the culprits, he added. [At the current market price of about Rs 9,320 per sovereign for 22 carat gold in Chennai, 1.25 kg or 156 sovereigns of gold costs approximately Rs 14,539,20. (1 kg = 1,000 g = 125 sovereigns.)]

Puducherry police arrest kingpin in Rs 100-crore multi-state crypto fraud case

PUDUCHERRY: In a major breakthrough in a multi-state cryptocurrency fraud case, the Puducherry Cybercrime Police have arrested Imran Basha (37), a resident of Saibaba Colony in Coimbatore, from Bengaluru. Basha is the main accused in a massive scam involving a fake cryptocurrency called Hashpe, which defrauded investors of over Rs 100 crore across India. He was wanted in six states and is linked to 22 criminal cases. A special team from the Puducherry Cyber Crime Special Cell arrested Basha. They have been pursuing him since last year for allegedly luring people by promising to triple their investment in two months through the fictitious Hashpe platform. The case surfaced when Asokan, a resident of Lawspet in Puducherry, lost Rs 93 lakh to the fraudulent scheme. Following his complaint, eight more investors from the Union Territory came forward, reporting combined losses of Rs 2.5 crore. A formal probe was launched under Senior Superintendent of Police Narra Chaitanya and Superintendent of Police S Baskarane. On May 17, another key figure, Syed Usman alias Babu, Managing Director of Hashpe, was arrested in Coimbatore after evading authorities for six months. Earlier, five others including Damodaran, Hitesh Jain, and Aravind Kumar, also from Coimbatore, were arrested. Police have seized several high-end vehicles, including one valued at Rs 1.5 crore. Investigations revealed that the accused promoted Hashpe using celebrities Tamannaah and Kajal Aggarwal to gain public trust, then artificially inflated the coin's value before rendering it worthless overnight. Police believe more than five suspects remain at large.

Babu held for graft had blessings of his bosses !

Hyderabad: Among dishonest government officials in a loop, it pays to keep money taps open. And, those having money taps are often powerful enough to stave off a transfer or simply ignore it! This explains how N Sridhar, an official of the Irrigation Department, arrested recently in a disproportionate assets case, managed to stay in the same location and position for over one year despite his transfer and even got his superiors to support him in the department by devious means. During investigations following the arrest of Sridhar in DA case, the Anti-Corruption Bureau stumbled upon the role of top irrigation officials in supporting him to continue in the same post, defying transfer orders issued by the Irrigation Secretary last year. Engineer-in– chief (General) G Anil Kumar is suspected to have helped Sridhar by quietly not relieving from the post. Officials said that state Irrigation Secretary Rahul Bojja issued orders to Sridhar, who was working as Executive Engineer (EE) in Choppadani in Karimnagar district, asking him to report to the head office on June 27 last year. The official did not report but managed to continue in the post and in the same location without any communication to the head office for the last one year. Aghast at this finding, the ACB, which arrested the irrigation official in a DA assets case last week, sought additional details with evidence from the higher authorities. Upon enquiries, the agency received information that Sridhar had been maintaining close relations with some top officials in the head office of the irrigation wing and thus managed to continue in the same post. 'The role of Anil Kumar in supporting Sridhar and other officials is under investigation. The ACB will summon the ENC and other top officials once the agency gets adequate evidence about the links between these officials,' sources said. It was pointed out that Anil had stopped the transfer of Sridhar and managed it secretly without involving the Secretary. Taking serious note of it, the ACB officials decided to question Sridhar, presently in Chanchalguda jail, to ferret out details of his relations with his superiors in the Irrigation wing. The role of top officials in supporting the corrupt engineer to amass a staggering wealth of more than Rs 200 crore would be probed before proceeding against all others who are believed to be involved in the entire episode, sources told The Hans India.
