Khareef spurs reforestation efforts in Dhofar

Salalah – Environment Authority, in partnership with Dhofar Municipality, has launched a campaign to plant 100 saplings of the rare Al Kadhi tree in the wilayat of Dalkhout, as part of ongoing efforts to protect native plant species and enhance vegetation cover across the governorate. The plantation drive coincides with the start of the khareef season, which brings light rain and high humidity – conditions favourable for sapling growth and survival. Officials said the campaign forms part of long-term environmental strategies to combat desertification, conserve biodiversity and raise public awareness. Al Kadhi, also known as Pandanus tectorius or screw pine, is a tropical species once commonly found in Dhofar. Growing up to 5m in height, the tree is known for its fragrant flowers used in local cuisine and traditional perfumery. Ecologically, the tree helps stabilise soil and prevent erosion, contributing to landscape preservation. The saplings are being planted in the newly established Al Maswar enclosure. Officials involved in the drive noted the cultural and environmental significance of the species. 'This campaign reflects our ongoing commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable management of natural resources,' an official stated. The effort also aims to increase public participation in protecting local ecosystems by encouraging sustainable agricultural practices and promoting the use of indigenous tree species. Authorities believe that reviving the Al Kadhi tree will help preserve Dhofar's unique ecological identity and support its environmental legacy for future generations.

3,000 wild trees pruned to prepare for Dhofar Khareef

Salalah – Environment Authority (EA) has launched a major tree-pruning initiative in Dhofar governorate ahead of the khareef season, aiming to improve ecosystem health and preserve native vegetation across the region. The project involves the selective trimming of around 3,000 wild trees, primarily Arabian Combretum and wild fig, in the wilayats of Salalah, Taqah, Mirbat, Rakhiout and Dalkout. The work, which ran through the month of May, will continue through June as well. May-June is a period considered optimal for promoting healthy tree growth and maintaining environmental balance. Field teams have started operations at multiple natural sites, with early observations pointing to improved growth and branch density. An official from the authority said over 5,000 trees were pruned in 2023 and 2024 under a broader programme aimed at protecting native flora from pest damage and degradation. 'These efforts are part of a long-term strategy to preserve the governorate's rich biodiversity and align with the goals of Oman Vision 2040, which emphasises sustainable environmental management and the protection of natural resources,' he said. The initiative supports Dhofar's reputation as one of Oman's key ecotourism destinations.
