Turkish embassy celebrates Youth Day in Cairo with sport, call for closer ties - City Lights - Life & Style
The Turkish embassy in Cairo marked Turkey's Youth and Sports Day on 19 May with an upbeat gathering that mixed games, diplomacy, and a quiet pitch for closer Egyptian-Turkish ties through sport and youth exchange. Held at the Turkish ambassador's Giza residence, the event brought together diplomats, youth representatives, and members of the Turkish, Egyptian, and Palestinian communities for a day of table tennis, arm wrestling, archery—and more than a little symbolism. Ambassador Salih Mutlu Şen used the occasion to announce a planned friendly match between Egypt and Turkey's under-21 football teams. The match is part of upcoming celebrations marking 100 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The Palestinian youth taking part in the celebration at the Turkish embassy in Giza. 'Youth represent hope and the future,' Şen said. 'Sports build friendships. We want more of that — at club level and national level.' He praised Egypt's rising talent, including Adam Asil, the Egyptian-born gymnast who now competes for Turkey and recently became a world champion. 'He's our shared pride,' Şen said, naming football stars Mohamed Salah and Arda Güler as youth role models in both countries. Palestinian youth were also welcomed at the embassy — a move Şen framed as both symbolic and intentional. 'Palestinian youth are the future of a free and independent Palestine,' he said. 'Just as Israeli children deserve safety and freedom, so do Palestinian children. Gaza is a test of human conscience.' Turkish ambassador Salih Mutlu Şen with the Egyptian winner of the airline ticket. The date itself — 19 May — commemorates the country's Youth and Sports Day and the launch of its independence movement under Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Şen reminded guests of the young people who fought and died in that struggle: 'Some were just fifteen.' The event closed with a raffle sponsored by Turkish airline A Jet. Three young guests — two Egyptian women and a Palestinian girl — won free tickets to Turkey. Şen's final message to the youth in the crowd was simple: 'Never stray from the path of human dignity, justice, and peace.' Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

Turkish Retail Chains Continue to Expand in Egypt
Rana Atef Colin's, a company experiencing rapid growth in Egypt, opened its 16th store at Cairo Festival City Mall. The Turkish Ambassador to Cairo, Salih Mutlu Şen, highlighted that Turkish retail chains are expanding and growing in Egypt. The well-known Turkish Colin's chain inaugurated its 16th branch in Egypt at Cairo Festival City Mall. The opening was attended by Turkish Ambassador Salih Mutlu Şen as well as senior executives from Colin's. The newly-opened store is one of the largest Colin's spots in Egypt, spanning an area of 750 square meters. Colin's representatives explained that all products in the store are designed in Turkey as Turkish material and are manufactured specifically in Turkey, Egypt, and other regions around the world. The stores sell exclusively under the Colin's brand, representing Turkish quality and identity. Ambassador Şen stated that Colin's, alongside LC Waikiki and Defacto, has opened stores in Egypt with 100% Turkish investment, and that they are directly managed by their parent companies in Turkey, from design through to production. He expressed hope that Colin's will continue its growth, anticipating the brand will reach 40 to 50 stores in Egypt. He also noted that LC Waikiki currently operates around 40 stores, while Defacto has more than 20. Ambassador Şen emphasized the key distinction between these brands and others: they are not only retailers but also manufacturers, and they are entirely Turkish-owned. He stated that Egyptian consumers value Turkish brands for their quality and price, and that such investments reflect the mutual benefits between the two countries. Some of these goods are produced within Egypt, promoting commercial and economic integration between Egypt and Turkey. Colin's officials added that the company will continue opening new stores in the near future, and that its current investments in the Qantara area, particularly in ready-to-wear clothing, are progressing as planned. read more Japan Stun Spain 2-1 to Qualify for World Cup Last 16 World Cup 2022: Get to Know Confirmed Line-ups of Japan and Spain Group E Decider Saudi Arabia Bid Farewell to World Cup after 2-1 Loss to Mexico Tunisia Achieve Historic Win over France but Fail to Qualify Tunisia to Clash against France in World Cup Sports Get to Know Squad of Group D Teams in World Cup Sports Al Ahly Gift EGP 70,000 to Players After Claiming Egyptian Super Cup Title Sports Bencharki Hits First 2 Goals with Al Jazira Since Leaving Zamalek Sports Arsenal Possible Line-up for Nottingham Forest News Egypt confirms denial of airspace access to US B-52 bombers Lifestyle Pistachio and Raspberry Cheesecake Domes Recipe News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Arts & Culture Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban's $4.7M LA Home Burglarized Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Sports Neymar Announced for Brazil's Preliminary List for 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers News Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly Inaugurates Two Indian Companies Arts & Culture New Archaeological Discovery from 26th Dynasty Uncovered in Karnak Temple Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War

What Closer Egypt-NATO Ties Could Mean
The Turkish and Italian embassies in Cairo have launched a joint initiative aimed at boosting ties between Egypt and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), in what experts see as a continuation of Egypt's long-standing policy of cooperating with the alliance without seeking membership. During an event hosted by the Turkish Embassy on Thursday evening, Ankara — acting as NATO's contact point in Egypt — gave a presentation on the alliance's structure and its partnership with Cairo. The Turkish Embassy said in an official statement that both Turkish and Italian missions in Egypt have been tasked with supporting NATO's partnership with Cairo throughout 2025 and 2026. Türkiye's ambassador to Egypt said his country will play a key role in facilitating cooperation and communication between Cairo and the NATO, as part of an initiative to boost the partnership between the alliance and Egypt. Speaking at an event hosted by the Turkish Embassy in Cairo on Thursday, Ambassador Salih Mutlu Şen reviewed NATO's past and present activities, as well as Türkiye's role as a member of the alliance. He stopped short of detailing specific areas of upcoming cooperation between Egypt and NATO, describing the relationship as 'a partnership within the framework of official relations.' 'Our role is to facilitate the relationship, as the Turkish Embassy serves as NATO's contact point in Cairo,' Şen told Asharq Al-Awsat. 'In general, we view positively any effort to strengthen ties between Egypt and NATO through the partnership program,' he added. In January, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held a phone call with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte to discuss escalating threats in the Middle East, including the conflict in Gaza, tensions in the Red Sea, developments in Syria, and instability across the Sahel region. According to an official readout at the time, Abdelatty welcomed NATO's efforts to launch a Southern Neighborhood Action Plan, which was adopted at the alliance's summit in Washington in July 2024. He also stressed the importance of strengthening NATO's ties with regional partners to address growing security challenges and said Egypt was keen to expand cooperation in areas such as capacity building, counterterrorism, and cybersecurity. The Washington summit saw NATO leaders approve a roadmap to step up engagement with its southern neighbors and announced plans to bolster the alliance's presence in the Middle East and Africa. Following the summit, Javier Colomina was appointed as the NATO Secretary-General's Special Representative for the Southern Neighborhood. He visited Egypt on September 19, 2024. Former Egyptian Deputy Foreign Minister Rakha Ahmed Hassan said Egypt's cooperation with NATO dates back to the 1990s, with a focus on maritime rescue operations, arms and drug trafficking surveillance, and counterterrorism training. Speaking to Asharq Al-Awsat, Hassan said Egypt's engagement with NATO operates on two levels: direct collaboration with the alliance and bilateral cooperation with individual member states. 'The partnership is limited to training and specific areas of cooperation, without involving military engagement,' he said, noting that Egypt has long followed a policy of working with international alliances without formally joining them.

Turkish Embassy in Cairo Organizes Traditional Iftar for Egyptian Journalists
Taarek Refaat The Embassy of the Republic of Turkey in Cairo hosted an iftar for Egyptian journalists on the occasion of the centenary of the establishment of Turkish-Egyptian diplomatic relations. The Embassy of the Republic of Turkey in Cairo organized a traditional iftar for Egyptian journalists at the embassy headquarters. More than 100 Egyptian journalists attended the iftar, and Turkish doner and baklava were served to the guests. In his address to journalists at the iftar, Ambassador Salih Mutlu Şen spoke about the Turkish doner, explaining that it was first introduced for commercial consumption in Istanbul at the beginning of the 20th century. He explained that "doner has become a staple fast food globally, especially in Germany, Egypt, and around the world." He pointed out that doner is known as "shawarma" in Arab countries, but in a different way. He explained that the words "doner" and "shawarma" mean the same thing in Turkish: something that revolves around itself. He stated that the embassy will continue its activities to promote Turkish cuisine and Turkish breakfast as part of the centenary celebrations of the establishment of relations. He explained that the Anatolian Fireworks Troupe is scheduled to perform a special show in front of the Pyramids as part of the centenary celebrations, and that contacts with the Egyptian Ministry of Culture on this matter are ongoing. He explained that an exhibition of traditional Turkish wedding dresses is also scheduled to be held in May, featuring Egyptian models. Ambassador Salih Mutlu Şen emphasized that Turkish-Egyptian relations have witnessed rapid progress over the past year, best demonstrated by the high-level exchange of visits. He added that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has visited only one country twice in 2024, namely Egypt. On the other hand, he emphasized that Azerbaijan's admission to the G8 at the G8 meeting held in Egypt's New Administrative Capital on December 19, chaired by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, was a joint outcome between Turkey and Egypt. He stated that the G8 seeks cooperation between Islamic countries, especially those developing in the fields of economy and industry. He emphasized that technological and industrial cooperation between Turkey and Egypt will continue to strengthen and deepen with the contribution of the private sector. He pointed out that Turkish companies' interest in the Suez Canal Economic Zone is growing, and that in the Qantara West area alone, there are four factories under construction or nearing completion, valued at over $200 million. The Ambassador stated that Ramadan has become a month of joy, celebrated with enthusiasm in both Egypt and Turkey throughout the month, with families and children participating. He said that one of the things he most admired about Egypt was the sincere participation of all segments of the Egyptian people in Ramadan, and their presence together during all visits and holidays. He also noted that Ramadan is a month of cooperation and solidarity, and said that he, personally and as an embassy, is fulfilling our duty, both as a humanitarian and Islamic duty, in this regard. He explained that he will host an iftar for 500 Egyptian families in a few days and will distribute Eidiya (money gifts) to children on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr. The ambassador explained that there is very close consultation and communication between Turkey and Egypt on regional issues, especially Libya, Syria, Sudan, and Palestine, and that there may be high-level visits and meetings involving Turkey, Egypt, and other regional countries on regional issues in the coming days. Finally, he stated that he considers all journalists to be his friends and partners and that he is keen to work closely with them and cooperate with them. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Egypt confirms denial of airspace access to US B-52 bombers News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Lifestyle Pistachio and Raspberry Cheesecake Domes Recipe Videos & Features Bouchra Dahlab Crowned Miss Arab World 2025 ..
