Livvy Dunne Shot Her Sports Illustrated Swim Cover with a Painful Broken Kneecap, but Says ‘It Was Worth It'

During her shoot, Dunne struck several poses in an asymmetrical zebra-print bikini on the beach in Bermuda. For the cover shot, she kneeled down in the sand that was covered by beautifully clear shallow water. The pain Dunne experienced during her SI Swimsuit shoot came after she sustained an avulsion fracture in her kneecap on March 6, barring her from future gymnastics competition at LSU. She's been on the road to recovery ever since. Dunne's appearance in the 2025 SI Swimsuit issue marked her third time being featured since she made her debut in 2023. She was one of four cover models selected alongside actress Salma Hayek Pinault, model Lauren Chan and fellow gymnast Jordan Chiles. The athlete spoke with PEOPLE exclusively at the 2025 SI Swimsuit launch party red carpet at The Hard Rock Hotel in New York City on May 15. She opened up about her future plans now that she's officially retired from gymnastics. "I've always said 'no' to opportunities way more than I've said 'yes' — so, I'm excited to do everything and be able to travel and to be able to do things on my time because it's always been around gymnastics," Dunne told PEOPLE exclusively at the event. "My life has revolved around gymnastics," she continued. "So, honestly, to be able to say yes to more things and potentially maybe do some more performing art stuff on screen — and I'm very excited." Sports Illustrated has tapped Salma Hayek Pinault, Jordan Chiles, Olivia Dunne and Lauren Chan as cover models for its 2025 Swimsuit issue, which hits stands May 17. Hayek Pinault was photographed by Ruven Afanador while Ben Horton captured Chiles and Ben Watts lensed Dunne and Chan. Photo shoots took place in picturesque locales around the world including the beaches of Bermuda and Jamaica; Zurich, Switzerland; the streets of Fort Worth, Texas and Cuixmala in Mexico. 'Sports Illustrated Swimsuit has always been about more than swimsuits and stunning imagery,' said MJ Day, editor in chief of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit. Hollywood actor Salma Hayek Pinault is making waves on the internet as she graced the cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit at the age of 58. This bold move broke all age-related stereotypes and proved that beauty and confidence only get better with 58-year-old actor looked absolutely stunning on the cover of the 2025 edition of the magazine. Hayek's cover photo shot in a pool, wearing a beautiful green swimsuit by Colombian designer Johanna Ortiz and accessorised with Jacquie Aiche an interview on Today Show with hosts Savannah Guthrie and Craig Melvin, Hayek shared how she never imagined being on the cover of such a magazine. 'I used to look at this magazine and wanted to see who was the new, gorgeous model, the new girl of the moment. It never crossed my mind that I could be on that cover. Because (the women) didn't look like me. My body isn't necessarily the model type. I never thought that was a possibility – and for it to happen when I'm 58! It's really shocking." The shoot wasn't easy for Hayek. She admitted to trying on over 100 swimsuits before she felt comfortable in front of the camera. But what truly changed her mindset was a surprising moment during the shoot. As she was beginning to feel nervous about being vulnerable at her age, a whale suddenly jumped from the ocean behind her and that sight changed everything for of a sudden, I felt, 'This is magical. This is my land. I'm 58, I'm doing this. My generation, especially Mexican women, we thought we were going to be dismissed at 35. And I got so excited, I felt really free. I put on Bad Bunny, I started dancing, I loved it," Hayek was one of four cover stars for the 2025 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition. Along with her, Olympian Jordan Chiles, gymnast Olivia Dunne, and model-entrepreneur Lauren Chan were also featured. The 2025 issue also highlighted 34 other inspiring women, including influencer Alix Earle, Paralympic swimmer Ali Truwit, and Olympic gold medallist Suni 2025 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition will be available on May 17, and with Hayek's groundbreaking Hayek began her acting journey in Mexican TV shows during the 1980s. She became popular in Hollywood in the 1990s with films like 'Desperado', 'From Dusk Till Dawn', and 'Wild Wild West'. Her powerful performance in 'Frida' (2002) earned her an Oscar nomination.
