Easy Japanese news in translation: Hokkai shrimp fishing season begins in Hokkaido
Seasonal fishing for the "Hokkai shimaebi" shrimp started on June 30 in Notsuke Bay in the Nemuro Strait east of Hokkaido, marking the arrival of summer. Twenty fishing boats with white sails went out of the bay and caught shrimp. It is an old-fashioned method of sailing with the wind and catching shrimp in nets. This fishing method is part of the cultural property included in the Japan Heritage "story of the salmon sanctuary."* The summer fishing season will continue until July 18.
(*Note: The official English title is "Salmon Sanctuary -- Nemuro Strait: perennial journey.")
