Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Doehler Dry Ingredient Solutions, LLC initiated a nationwide recall of its Member's Mark Freeze Dried Fruit Variety Pack after internal testing discovered contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a potentially life-threatening bacterium. Why It Matters The affected products were distributed to Sam's Club locations in over 40 states from July 1 to July 25, 2025, according to a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) alert published on July 31. So far, no illnesses have been reported in connection with the recall. Listeria monocytogenes is known to cause listeriosis, a foodborne illness particularly dangerous for vulnerable populations like young children, the elderly, and pregnant women. Healthy people typically experience short-term ailments such as fever, headaches and diarrhea, but the infection can be fatal in people with compromised immune systems. The FDA and USDA have stressed that resourceful recall systems are critical for minimizing the impact of foodborne illnesses on public health and for maintaining consumer confidence in the food supply chain. Walmart closes another store amid new customer behavior
As the king of the brick and mortar space, Walmart (WMT) has to stay ahead of changes to remain competitive. It may not seem like physical retail can change in the blink of an eye. Related: Costco customers get bad news from Walmart's Sam's Club But big box stores must be just as adaptable as online retailers; and customers demand that they keep up. "We are a people-led, tech-powered omnichannel retailer dedicated to helping people save money and live better," CEO Doug McMillon said, per Chain Drug Review. "I don't want to underestimate the impact of technological change, but we serve people, and we work with people." And while that people-centric perspective can get you pretty far, it doesn't get retailers all the way over the finish line in our technologically innovative world. So Walmart has embarked on a lofty project to renovate and modernize 650 stores across 47 states. All told, each renovation could run about $1 million per store. "This store was built with the customer in mind. It's part of a larger transformation happening across our stores as we reimagine what shopping looks like for the future. It shows what's possible when innovation meets intention," President John Furner said of the new project. Image source:Some stores don't serve Walmart's vision of the future anymore, though. Walmart said it will close a store in Coon Rapids, Minn. on August 29, 2025. The store is located on Riverdale Drive NW in a large shopping plaza, next to a Hobby Lobby, Skechers outlet, and Plato's Closet. It's about a 30 minute drive from Minneapolis. There are over a dozen Walmart locations in the greater Minneapolis area, and the Coon Rapids location is considered an older store. More Retail: Walmart makes drastic change to fight theft amid worrying trendTarget has new plan to win back customers with big savingsHome Depot makes clear statement amid boycott threatsFamous retail chain makes two more alarming store closures The Coon Rapids Walmart location lacks a robust grocery store, which customers have been increasingly seeking out for affordable food, particularly as tariffs and inflation squeeze the cost of everything from eggs to apparel. A Walmart spokesperson called the store an older format, adding that the closure is also due to a poor financial performance. "We are grateful to the customers who have given us the privilege of serving them at our store in Coon Rapids. We look forward to continuing to serve them at our many nearby locations, on and through delivery to their home or business," Walmart said of the closure. With over 4,600 locations across the U.S., Walmart is always examining its stores for inefficiencies or areas for improvement. It recently did away with the self checkout option at its Shrewsbury, Mo. store as theft reached untenable levels. After Walmart removed the option, theft calls to the police dropped to 11% overall , between January to May 2025. The store saw an over 50% drop in theft overall. Arrests were also down. That store remains open for business, just with assisted checkouts via real cashiers. The Coon Rapids, Minnesota store closure, however, marks the second store closed in the northern Twin Cities area in two years. The Brooklyn Center store, also north of Minneapolis, closed down in April 2023. All 180 affected employees in Coon Rapids store will be eligible for transfers to other stores in the area. Walmart's Sam's Club steals a major edge over Costco
Pharmacies might kind of feel like an afterthought, depending on where you go to pick up your medications, since they're often located at the back of a store. But they're quite big business. Related: Popular beer and wings chain closes all restaurants, no bankruptcy "For 2024, total prescription dispensing revenues for retail, mail, long-term care, and specialty pharmacies reached $683 billion (excluding COVID-19 vaccines)," the 2025 Economic Report on U.S. Pharmacies and Pharmacy Benefit Managers found. "Anti-obesity GLP-1 agonist drugs remained the most significant driver of prescription revenue at retail pharmacies, accounting for more than 80% of dispensing revenue growth for 2024." But sometimes it can be hard to differentiate between pharmacies. Most give you access to more or less the same brands or medications. And most have similar layouts, services, and offerings. But according to J.D. Power's 2025 U.S. Pharmacy Study, customers actually preferred some pharmacies over others. The study examined the following metrics and measured stores across the U.S. Staff adequacyTrust in pharmacistsEase of ordering prescriptionsSpeed of filling prescriptions Supermarkets, for example, when customers chose where they preferred to access their pharmacies. More Retail: Walmart makes drastic change to fight theft amid worrying trendTarget has new plan to win back customers with big savingsHome Depot makes clear statement amid boycott threatsFamous retail chain makes two more alarming store closures This makes sense, since it's often far more convenient to pick up a prescription while you're grocery shopping than it is to make the extra stop at a standalone drugstore. Power 2025 U.S. Pharmacy Study are: WegmansPublixH-E-BWalmart Neighborhood MarketStop & ShopShoprite But Sam's Club, which is owned by Walmart (WMT) , edged out Costco (COST) for customer satisfaction. "Chain drug store customers are significantly more likely than supermarket or mass market merchandiser pharmacy customers to say they 'definitely will' or 'probably will' switch pharmacies in the next 12 months," J.D. Power global healthcare intelligence managing director Christopher Lis said. "That openness to switching, combined with steadily increasing satisfaction scores at mail order pharmacies, helps set the stage for a tipping point in the pharmacy space." Satisfaction scores for different kinds of drugstores were: Chain drug stores: 643 Mail order pharmacies: 697Mass market merchandisers: 706Supermarkets: 715 For the 10th year in a row, Sam's Club actually edged out Costco for customer satisfaction. Sam's Club received a 778 ranking for the brick-and-mortar mass merchandiser pharmacy category. Costco, on the other hand, received a 765, which puts it in a close second place. Walmart has indicated it's trying to stand up the best possible customer experience in its pharmacies, noting they serve as big opportunities. It just stood up a massive prescription processing facility outside of Washington, D.C. in Frederick, Maryland to serve over a dozen states in the U.S. "This facility represents the next chapter in how we care for our customers," Kevin Host, SVP of Walmart pharmacy, said. "With greater efficiency behind the scenes, our pharmacists can spend more time in front of patients - offering expert guidance, building trust and delivering better health outcomes." Walmart's Sam's Club adds new perk to match Costco
Very few companies compete as directly as Sam's Club and Costco. Yes, there is a third warehouse club chain, BJ's wholesale, but that brand is very much the RC cola to Sam's Club and Costco's Coke and Pepsi. In many markets, the two warehouse club giants compete directly. Sometimes they're literally across the street from each other and on other occasions, they are close enough that they're competing for the same customers. Related: Costco members angry about price increase Both chains offer a similar merchandise selection and low prices. One of the ways they hook people in to keep them as members is selling them something that isn't on the store floor. If, for example, you get your prescriptions filled at Costco's pharmacy, not renewing your membership means having to change drugstores when your membership expires. That one thing may not be enough to keep you, but if you end up with multiple services purchase through your warehouse club that increases your loyalty. Costco and Sam's Club make the vast majority of their profits selling memberships. It's much easier to keep a member than it is to recruit a new one. Sam's Club does not share membership retention rates regularly. Costco routinely brags about theirs in their quarterly earnings call. "In terms of renewal rates at Q3-end, our U.S. and Canada renewal rate was 92.7% and the worldwide rate came in at 90.2%," Costco CFO Gary Millerchip said during the chain's third-quarter earnings call. "...The decreases in the renewal rates in Q3 versus Q2 were primarily attributable to sign-ups from a Groupon promotion in the fall of 2023, entering the renewal rate calculation for the first time this quarter." Image source: Brown/AFP via Getty Images If Sam's Club or Costco (COST) can get a member to subscribe to another annual service through one of its deals, it locks that customer in. That's why both offer low prices on things like accounting software, wireless service. Ideally, both warehouse club chains want to tie members to service that will cost a lot more if they drop their membership. More Retail: Supermarket inflation: Beef prices soar as egg prices fallLevi's shares plan to beat tariffs, keep holiday prices downAmazon's quiet pricing twist on tariffs stuns shoppers Sam's Club has a perfect offering for that purpose with its new deal with Spot Pet Insurance. The Walmart-owned (WMT) warehouse club has launched an integrated pharmacy program and discounted insurance plans from Spot exclusively for Sam's Club members, designed to make care simpler, more affordable and more accessible - right inside your local club. Up to 15% off customizable pet insurance plans (and Spot's additional 10% multi-pet discount on all added pets) through Spot.*110+ pet medications available for $80 or less, with no reimbursement forms. More than 50 of these medications are available for $15 or less. A select flea, tick and heartworm preventative medication for cats and a select heartworm preventative medication for dogs is available for no out of pocket in-club medication dispensing service, eliminating the need for extra vet visits for medication dispensing. "This is a program built by Spot Pet Insurance and Sam's Club with real life in mind. It's care designed to help work with your routine, not complicate it. And with many Sam's Club members owning pets, many of whom aren't likely currently insured based on national pet insurance statistics, we knew there was an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of millions of families," wrote Sam's Club Vice President of Healthcare Sherri Keeth. Making pet insurance more readily available is a noble goal as few Americans have it. Of the 165.3 million pets in the United States, only 3.92% are covered by pet health insurance, according to data from the North American Pet Health Association. That's at least partly because many people don't know how to buy it. Sam's Club and Costco adding pet health insurance should make it much more accessible for people. Costco has a more limited offer for Figo Pet Insurance. "Quality, affordable pet insurance can help pay for unexpected veterinarian bills. As a Costco member, you may be eligible for an exclusive discount on plans," Costco shared on its website. Gold Star and Business members get 15% discount. Executive members get the same discount but also get Lost Pet Recovery serviced by 24 PetWatch1. "This includes 24/7 access to Lost Pet Recovery Specialists and DirectConnect services to help reunite lost pets with their families. The membership is valued at $59.95 for the first year and includes a complimentary renewal each year as long as you remain a Costco Executive Member," the site shared.
