Rivals at odds over who caused first-lap crash in Saudi Arabian GP

Luckless Jack Doohan ends Saudi Arabian GP practice with reprimand
Motorsport photo Alpine racer Jack Doohan ended the final practice session ahead of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix with a trip to the Formula 1 stewards' office. The Australian driver was caught crossing the painted area between the track and pit entrance on two occasions, which officials said was in breach of F1's sporting code. Advertisement Doohan first crossed the white line that divides the pit entry from the race track early in the third free practice session ahead of the 2025 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. Stewards issued the Alpine driver with a warning for his first infringement, adding that it was 'clear in the event notes that no part of the tyre must cross the line in any direction'. Later in the session, Doohan crossed the white line again and was once again investigated by the stewards for the breach of F1's international sporting code. As it was Doohan's second infringement, his penalty was stricter. 'It was made clear in the event notes that no part of the tyre must cross the line in any direction,' the stewards explained in documents shared by the FIA. 'There is no doubt that this prohibition was breached for a second time. Despite being warned, DOO crossed the painted area again.' After being found to have failed to follow the race director's event notes, which were issued ahead of the grand prix, Doohan was handed a reprimand by the stewards. Doohan isn't the only rookie to have been caught out crossing the white line between the track and pitlane. During yesterday's practice session, Racing Bulls driver Liam Lawson was also handed a reprimand for crossing the white line on two occasions. A reprimand is one of the lowest penalties that stewards can hand out over a race weekend and usually follows a warning for breaches such as exceeding track limits. If a driver picks up four reprimands in a session, they may be hit with a grid drop or further punishment. Charles Leclerc unhappy as Ferrari upgrades fail to improve pace
Motorsport photo Charles Leclerc was pleased with his performance in qualifying ahead of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, but the Ferrari driver said his SF-25 still wasn't where he wants it to be. 'I'm not happy, I'm really not happy,' Leclerc told reporters including after qualifying fourth at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit. Advertisement 'Finishing P4 in qualifying is really good, I put everything out there, but for now the performance of the car is just not there,' he continued. 'I either have massive understeer or massive oversteer, but the end result is that I don't have enough grip to reproduce what the guys in front do.' Leclerc said he was maximizing the car's potential, but the gap to the frontrunners was still too significant. 'At the moment I feel good in the car. I think I found the sweet spot of the car that matches my driving style,' he explained. 'I feel like in the last three qualifying sessions I managed to maximize the potential of the car, but the potential is just not yet at the level I want.' 'I'm a bit disappointed because we had a few upgrades that should have helped but the gap [to the frontrunners] seems to be pretty similar to before,' he said. '[The upgrades] do work, but unfortunately I feel like the others have done as much of a step, which means that the gap hasn't really changed.' Verstappen: Red Bull hasn't solved F1 car woes despite "special" Japan pole
Motorsport photo Max Verstappen has said Red Bull has not fixed its troublesome Formula 1 car despite taking a stunning Japanese Grand Prix pole that he called one of his finest career laps. The four-time world champion was bidding for his fourth consecutive pole at Suzuka, but balance issues with his 2025 Red Bull car combined with McLaren's dominant form looked set to end that streak. Advertisement But after not making much of an impact throughout qualifying, Verstappen suddenly pulled a stunning final Q3 lap out of the bag to defeat Lando Norris by 0.012 seconds and Oscar Piastri by 0.044s, his pole lap of 1m26.983s half a second quicker than he had managed in Q2. Verstappen roared in jubilation on his team radio after his surprise pole and hailed it as one of his best ever laps in an F1 car. "There was a lot of happiness when I crossed the line," the Dutchman said. "We just tried to keep improving our situation a bit. I was fully committed everywhere. "I've had some really nice poles in other places but if you look at how our season started it was a surprise and that makes it a very special one.
