And it can even lay almost totally flat to the floor with an operating height of just under 10cm. The vacuum cleaner ditches the giant bin normally featured on Dyson products for a new system that compacts the dust into the PencilVac's slender body. "I have long wanted to make a vacuum of only 38mm diameter," said Sir James Dyson, the company boss. He explained that the thickness is important – it's the same as the Dyson's Supersonic hair dryer handle. Dyson continued: "But first we needed to develop our most powerful Hyperdymium motor at only 28mm diameter to achieve such a slender machine." HAIR WE GO! It also uses a bizarre new Fluffycones system that uses four cones split across two brush bars. This system works to eject long hair as you clean, so you don't have to pull or cut it out. 'If long hairs get wrapped around the cone, the spinning motion along with the specific angle of the cone causes the hair to tighten,' said Dyson's Sam Cole, Floorcare Design Manager, speaking to The Sun. 'Which results in the hair travelling down to the smaller end of the cone, before it is released as a small hairball.' We tried Dyson's new OnTrac headphones There's also a new two-stage dust separation system, which Dyson engineers say will capture 99.99% of particles (down to 0.3 microns). That means cleaner air is pumped back into your home – and should mean suction stays strong. The dust inside is compressed in real-time to get as much usage possible out of the small bin, and should mean you have to empty it less often. According to gadget-maker Dyson, the bin holds five times more dust and debris than its 0.08-litre capacity. 8 The device can eject hair as you vacuum so it doesn't get caught up in the system Credit: Dyson This works using a syringe "bin ejection" system that "plunges" the dirt deep into the bin – while also wiping the shroud clean at the same time. MOTOR RUNNING It's all powered by a new motor that's Dyson's smallest to date – as well as its fastest, spinning at 140,000rpm. This, Dyson says, makes it 35% more "power dense" than its predecessor, despite the shrunken size. 'Engineering our smallest and fastest vacuum motor is no simple feat. It was more than miniaturising every piece of technology," said Dyson tech chief John Churchill. 8 You can easily clean hard-to-reach places with the slimmed-down design – and then dispense the contents of the bin in seconds Credit: Dyson "It is a precise integration of motor design, electronics, software, and hardware, all working together seamlessly." 'Great energy': Rain can't slow runners at Blue Nose Marathon
Social Sharing It was a wet and cloudy day for thousands of runners taking part in the 22nd annual Blue Nose Marathon in Halifax. Halifax's Maksym Pokotylets crossed the finish line with a splash, taking home first place in two hours, 33 minutes and nine seconds. Toronto's Tamara Kwast placed first in her division, and was the first female to cross the finish line, in 2:53:54. For runner Alexandra Quimby, holding her baby, Wally, in her arms was the best part about finishing the race. "It's really fun," Quimby said. "It seems like there's great energy despite the weather." Quimby, originally from Ontario, moved to Nova Scotia last July. This was her first Blue Nose Marathon. She said she and her friend woke up at 5 a.m., ate a bagel and drank some coffee to relax before the race. Quimby placed second in her division and 14th overall, finishing in just under three hours. Dozens of fundraising organizations also took part in the race. More than $250,000 dollars was raised. Bide Awhile, a Dartmouth animal shelter, raised over $12,000. Sam Cole, the organization's communications and marketing co-ordinator, ran the 5K yesterday and the 10K this morning. "I love running, but I love raising the money for the animals even more," said Cole. Cole said the run was a little trickier with the rain. "Shoes are definitely soaked, got a few blisters from the water, and the bridge was a struggle with the wind and the rain, but at the end of the day, it's fun to take part and the energy here makes up for it."

Big spike in number of Coloradans refusing to take toxicology tests
DENVER (KDVR) — There has been a huge spike in the number of people in Colorado who refuse to take toxicology tests after being arrested for driving while impaired. Now, a new campaign has been launched to make sure people know about the consequences of driving impaired and refusing to take the test. Colorado State University Fort Collins holds first university-wide commencement in 27 years New stats now show that more than half of the people arrested for driving under the influence in 2022 refused to take toxicology tests. It's all because the Colorado Expressed Consent Law said Colorado Department of Transportation Traffic Safety Manager Sam Cole. 'Unfortunately, a lot of people do not know that if they are arrested for DUI, they have to take a toxicology test, that's either a blood test or a urine test,' Cole said. CDOT said drivers who refuse to take a toxicology test after being arrested can, among other things, have their license revoked and be forced to use an ignition interlock device. Because of the rising number of toxicology test refusals, CDOT has launched a new campaign to make sure people know the law. Christopher Decker is a defense attorney and FOX31 Legal Analyst. 'In most circumstances, it is a worse outcome for a driver to refuse this test and suffer more consequential punishment from the Department of Motor Vehicles than it would be to consent,' Decker said. CDOT said a survey showed most drivers who refused the toxicology test did not understand the consequences or were advised to refuse the test by a friend or family member to avoid self-incrimination. MADD said additional testing can help provide vital information to help keep roadways safe. 'It also allows us to shift how we communicate about impaired driving. Then we can go in and look at what language we are using in our preventative efforts,' MADD Colorado State Executive Director Rebecca Green said. Denver is home to one of the best brunch buffets in the US: TastingTable CDOT said that in the first four months of 2025, there were 49 impaired driving-related traffic deaths in the state. CDOT, CSP urge motorcycle safety
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, and the Colorado Department of Transportation is working with Colorado State Patrol to encourage motorists to put safety first. 'Unfortunately, our roadways are increasingly becoming unsafe for motorcyclists,' says Sam Cole, traffic safety manager for the Colorado Department of Transportation. Motorcycle deaths in the state have risen by 57% in the last decade. Cole says there are a few notable contributing factors. 'When it comes to motorcyclists, it's a problem with them riding too fast, or they're impaired by drugs or alcohol, or they just don't have on helmets.' Cole also says fatal crashes frequently happen at intersections where it can be hard for drivers to see motorcyclists. 'That's why it's so important, especially at intersections, to be looking for those non-vehicle entities, those bicyclists, those motorcyclists… There's some drivers of passenger vehicles out there that are distracted. They're not paying attention. That's why motorcyclists need to need to wear their helmets because you can't always avoid a crash.' According to CDOT, 44% of motorcyclists killed in crashes in 2024 were not wearing a helmet. He also reminds motorcyclists of the difference between lane filtering, made legal in Colorado in August 2024, and lane splitting. 'Lane splitting is when motorcycles will pass in between vehicles that are moving on the roadway. That is illegal, highly illegal. But lane filtering, passing those stopped vehicles so you can get to the front of the line and out of harm's way is legal,' says Cole. He says lane filtering is a good way for motorcyclists to get to the front of the line of traffic so they aren't hit from behind. Cole encourages motorcyclists to not only wear safety gear like boots, gloves and a helmet, but also to 'keep your speeds down, obey the law, and don't ride impaired.' As for drivers, Cole says, 'They just need to be more aware that there's other people on our roadways besides cars and trucks.' At the end of the day, Cole says it's important for all motorists to be mindful on the road. 'I don't want to pin this only on drivers of vehicles or riders of motorcycles.
